Oooo, nice!  Is it all metal or metal wrapped on something else?  Is that like 3 LEDS on each arm?  Whats the relay board for, the motors?

It's a  formed piece on its own but does have plastic inserts that I made to hold the 3 LEDs per arm.  As I said before the Arduino controlled relay board is for sequential switching of the various LED groups in the Coin Plate (Core).  To start with I'll need only 4 of the relays but the others will be used to control power up of other parts of RoToron on start up.  The final board I have to make myself is the LED Chaser using some ICs and other parts.

Here's the piece after I wired it up.

Here it is installed into the Core, the Cog is just loosely attached for effect.

I decided the wiring loom I'd made was too messy so I replaced it with CAT 6 Ethernet cable.  This is really useful for wiring looms, the Ethernet sockets can be wired straight into the controller box (containing Arduino boards).

I haven't had much time for this project in the last few days but will again soon.

Awesome!

In addition to what op2not said, I also love the loom, the contrasting strain relief and the radiation hazard trefoil on the back of the reactor core.  This is just -cool-.

Looking good!

Have you considered a different form of driver for the LEDs, like a MOSFET instead of the relays?  Would be smaller, quieter and less prone to mechanical failure.  I assume the LEDs will be switched off and on many many times?  MOSFETs work really well with Arduino boards.

Thanks for looking in on my progress folks, I appreciate the comments and kudos  I've been spending almost all my spare time on electronics for this project since I last posted.

Have you considered a different form of driver for the LEDs, like a MOSFET instead of the relays?  Would be smaller, quieter and less prone to mechanical failure.  I assume the LEDs will be switched off and on many many times?  MOSFETs work really well with Arduino boards.

I have, I will be using MOSFET relays elsewhere in the project, these are OK for this purpose.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I've mainly been working on control circuits and Arduino stuff lately.  It's all nearly done now.  I just have some audio stuff to do for the Core boot sequence.  I re-did the LED spinner for inside the Core.  I wanted to pack more LEDs onto the disk but hand wiring them is a pain so...

I built this LED chaser circuit from some schematic I downloaded.  I made it small with a variable resistor so I can adjust the chase speed.

All these controller boards, relays, Arduino, tiny amplifier etc are packed inside the Core controller.  CAT 6 sockets take the feeds from the Core.

Here is the finished unit connected to its controller.  The controller has a PC interface as well for switching sync and a manual overide for testing.  You can just see the "flux capacitor" LEDS lighting up.  Single images don't do them justice.  The video will show them working properly.

Thanks for the inspiration.  Maybe I'm not tired of filling and sanding yet after all.

I very much appreciate you sharing this project.  I know it's been a long road and difficult in spots, and I just want to say that it's had an impact on me.  It's an honor to watch you work.

Carry on.

I've made a video of the completed coin plate with core module.  The Arduino stuff took a little longer than I anticipated but that’s always the way with me.

The novelty of the Core will be just for during power up of RoToron and perhaps between games in attract mode.  It would be distracting and annoying to listen to this thing during game play. The Core controller does have a volume control on it now, accessible from the rear hatch of the machine.  In the guts of the controller you can see the various boards and wiring that work the magic.

So, click HERE to watch!

The coin plate revision has been fun, the electronics was nerve wracking though.  I blew two sets of (expensive) LED groups when I was tired, by forgetting to place a resistor on my test battery.  I did this twice!  The second time I was really pissed off!  :banghead: I'll  be focusing on the top part of the shell over the next few weeks.  No need to coat it in fibre glass It's already made of the stuff.  It's suffered a bit of wear and tear though.  Some minor restoration work will be needed before a re-spray to the new color.

I struggle in vain to sufficiently express how amazingly cool this is without tripping the board's profanity filter.

I love that it's such a physical effect, too - I think most people, myself included, would have probably tried to fake that design element with an LCD animation or something, and it would have turned out much more sterile and flat, where you went all old-school practical effect Stan Winston on it, instead.

Twelve out of ten for style and execution.  Bravo.

WOOOOOW!  I didn't understand what you were doing with the "chasing" LEDs until I saw the video.  So ---smurfing--- cool!  Synced up with the video and audio really did it for me.  You clearly put your time, effort and love into this one.  Congrats dude.  This is the part I love about these forums.  So much effort and creativity into something "just cause" we want to see if we can do it.  It's a blessing and a curse, but it makes some beautiful artifacts like this!  :applaud:

The RoToron talking animation is a really slick piece of design. When it shows up and then speaks it's a seamless transition visually. It's simple but very pleasing. I mean, there's a cool spinny light up whirly whiney doohicky on the table that's cool too, but having that little animation start speaking then change every so slightly to the final form is really really slick.

Jennifer, barrymossel, bperkins01, Ian, javeryh, Jimbo, markc74, opt2not, acvieluf, rablack97, Arroyo, Laythe, Nephasth, Drnick, JudgeRob, Le Chuck – A big thanks from me for your very generous comments.  I’m really pleased you guys like what it is I’m trying to achieve.   ;D   My idea is to create an arcade machine which is fun but which also has an underlying bit of imaginative, technological, sci-fi wizzo going on, some personality in the machine if you will.

It’s a work in progress as I review and improve on video and audio content to go with the hardware, but I’m glad you guys already get where it’s going.  Le Chuck is right, it’s a complete package, a combination of timing, mechanics and effects.  It has to register on the NERD excitometer otherwise I’m failing in my mission.

Malenko, the relay board I’m using is a Duinotech version, probably very similar to yours.  It runs directly on 12 volts and features optical isolation.

I need to put this part of RoToron aside for now and concentrate on the upper shell with some work on the control panel as well.  First the upper shell.
I’m going to re-prime this component before spraying the new color yellow.

Here I’m just wet sanding with 180 grit to get a nice dull finish with good adhesion for fresh primer.

Here’s the result, dull and rough, just how I need it to be.

Next post I should have this primed and repaired.  I think I’m going to need to build a jig to hold this for painting and working on.

Jenn would get all curious at this point... When you drop a coin, the flux cap triggers through the relay, I get that, But for how long? On a timer for a set duration? or the vid signal via oscillator or cascading timer signals set to turn off at the end of game?...You don't need no stinking jigs, hang it from 2 pieces of clean baling wire (wipe it with thinner) one to hang it from, and one that goes to the floor so you can stand on it and keep the piece from spinning while blasting it with that fancy dandy gun. ;)

You're on the right track Jenn, any hardware like relays etc. is controlled from the Arduino board.  Drop a coin, trigger an optical sensor which sends to an input pin on the Arduino, a small bit of code controls the relay duration using a timer function.  The same setup can be used to detect coin rejects and play a sound and/or trigger other effects.  Arduino makes microprocessor control so accessible, it's really easy to learn.  Peripheral boards for sensors or other input devices are many.  I would only have the Core run a short set routine before game play and then go quiet during actual play.  That way there’s no need to detect the end of the game.  It would just reset to monitoring for another coin drop.

Actually I know of people using these boards to control Pinball machine logic as well.  Something to think about!

Your idea for wire suspending would be excellent if I only needed to paint the component.  I’ll need to patch repair and sand as well, so something more sturdy would be better in this instance.  Something like this will take me 30 mins to build from scrap wood.  I’ll probably screw some casters on it as well so I can move it around.  I can re-use this jig for other heavy objects I’m working on as well.  The top shell of my machine will bolt to it and allow me to pivot it around for access.  I don't want to use the lower part of the actual cabinet for this because its busy being worked on separately.

These are the parts I will focus on as I mentioned before;

The only new parts I need to fabricate are the side curved sections, the parts that hold the tweeter units for the speakers and the parts shown in red.  I'm very tempted to have the tweeter 'brackets' 3D printed.  I can refine and paint the 3D printed parts to look slick.  The logo (bottom red part) I'll cast in clear resin.  The top light (top red part) will be formed on my vacuum press.

I want to get these components right up to completion, speakers mounted etc. over the next few weeks - good motivation to get me to the finish!

It's the little details that make all the difference.   :applaud:

It is indeed!

Apologies if I've missed it but what size screen do you plan for this.. Lcd/Crt??

I’ll be using an NEC reference quality 21.5" LCD, the one in the video.  I bought this LCD monitor years ago for this project.  It has an excellent picture (1600 x 1200) at all viewing angles and was designed for rotation use.  It’s been hardly used at all except for testing, at the time it was also superior to the equivalent HP Monitor.  It was not cheap.  I worked for NEC at the time and bought it at cost for ~ $850. It will be fed the best HLSL video feed I can provide it.  There’s no room in RoToron for a CRT and I wouldn’t use one in this project even if I could.  I have another project I will be using a CRT in, which will be fun!

I've been working away at the top shell after building a quick and dirty jig to hold it.  I can move the shell in any direction while mounted on the jig, makes the work much easier.

This component needs some fibre glass patching here and there and some Bondo work as well.  Then another coat of high build primer, then new paint.

This may be the last thing you want to hear right now.... But, since all the hard work is done and with few changes to that shell you could turn it into a plug, A reverse mold could than be made from it and you could make just as many as your heart desired. (you can spray the resin and gel) it would most likely be a 2 piece mold (bolted together) given the shape, and the back of the base would be a separate piece  but the seam would be color sanded/buffed gel coat (like a boat) rather than painted but still not a deal breaker in terms of production and cost just a more durable finish with less dry time, Food for thought

I'd sooner smear myself in fish oil and offal and go naked body surfing in shark infested waters than ever build another one of these again and we have VERY  big sharks in our waters here.   ;)

Down to page 2? Ond I love your work man, but lets finish this one eh?  :notworthy:
