I'm currently working on my "revised" Mario Bros MAME project.
Finally (after years of having them) I've decided to complete and add
my AimTrak lightguns.

I've had some major PC issues as of late, and ended up scrapping the existing
PC and going with an old HP I had kicking around. I put in a new HDD and did a
fresh Windows install, installed MALA & MAME, and started to add the emulators &
ROM files.

I'm going to have the following systems/games installed.

(1) MAME
(2) NES
(3) SEGA MASTER SYSTEM
(4) SEGA GENESIS
(5) TURBO GRAFX 16
(6) HOUSE OF THE DEAD 1,2, & 3 (PC VERSIONS)

I'm yet to finishing the configuation for MAME, all be it I dont supsect any issues.
The ULTIMARC website has plenty of documentation on the set up.
I don't recall what emulator I'm using for NES, but it is working flawlessly.
No configuation required........it just worked!

For House Of The Dead I installed the Troubleshooter. I'm yet to configure it.

Where I'm stuck is with Sega, I'm using KEGA FUSION and I find I can't get it working
with the guns. I'm looking for anyone that can suggest a good Sega (& Genesis) emulator
with light gun support.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks all

for master system, i use mame.  in the “slot” section, you can pick the controller type.

genesis i am running retroarch 1.6.9 with the genesis gx plus core.  note that the newest retroarch broke gun support so get 1.6.9

hope this helps!

Thank you @tony.silveira  ,

I appreciate the help.
I'll look into these ASAP!

I'm confused, for Sega Master System you use MAME ?
MAME will run my Sega Master System ROMs (the ROM extension escapes me now).

I've tried in the past to run things like Playstation and Dreamcast, but I ran into many issues configuring controls, even for the N64 and SNES I had these issues.
As such for this build I've accepted my limitations (and PC limitations) and just gone with what I've listed above.

I know I'm missing some awesome light gun games, and a few I may look for the PC versions of them.... but it is what it is ! I'll still have tons of options (+ a Raspberry Pi bartop build that will allow my to emulate consoles I cant/wont play on my cabinet).

EDIT ---- Can I run Retroarch thru Mala, does anyone know ? Mala is the existing frontend I'm using.

Again thank you all !

i was using fusion for master system and genesis, still do for every game that doesn’t use lightguns.  in looking for alternatives, mame worked for master system with guns!  i believe the rom extension is sms.

i have never used mala but i would think of you point mala to rlauncher as the emu, it would work.

RL was a steep learning curve for me but if you take the plunge, i’m sure it will pay off for you.

feel free to PM me if you need some specific help.

Thanks @tony.silveira ,

I recall in the past you were a huge help to me, so thank you.
And I very well make take you up on the offer to PM you for assistance.
In the next two/three weeks I plan on "trying to wrap this up."
(this weekend is a wash as my little girl turns 5).

I have an older version of MAME, v0.124 if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully that will work for SMS. I know I read in later builds MESS was built into MAME.

Like you I use FUSION, and will continue to use FUSION for SMS & Genesis games that are not light gun games.

Fingers crossed all will work out and I'll be using these guns in no time (for Sega stuff).

oh your on 124, you would need to run an older version of MESS then.  in any case, just PM me and happy birthday to your little girl!

I use MAME for Master Systems games.  There is an older program called FreezeSMS that worked with Aimtrak as well though it had it's limitations and a game or two didn't work.

I've yet to find a Genesis emulator that works with Aimtrak. Hopefully MAME can implement it and fix the Super Scope input.

hey darth, use retroarch 1.6.9 and genesis gx plus core.  note that newest retroarch broke the triggers (cursor will move but no firing).

at least 1.6.9 works for me and my old actlab guns...

Thanks guys, some good info here.

So MESS supports light guns, or does it depend on the ROM?
I'm unsure (since my MAME is older) if I should go with MESS or even try FREEZESMS ?

For the Genesis I'm going to try the RetroArch for sure.
Just Sega Master System I'm left with a few questions.

With where I am in my setup I'm unsure if I should go with a newer MAME.
I'm not that tech savvy, so I'm unsure I'd be able to  rebuild my ROM set, etc.

Any drawback (in reality) to using a version of MAME that does not match your ROM set ? My set of ROMS is for 124...but if the newest MAME would be good I could try.

Ughhhhhhh............ such a pain ! LOL

124 is really old, no doubt you would run into rom issues.

do this, keep 124 as is since you are happy with it.  then run newest mame just for master system.

  • Web Developer.
Despite what aimtrak says, it isn’t a light gun. Just like the wii, it’s an IR LED triangulation system. I believe aimtrack will work with mame, simulating a mouse input. I don’t think mame supports real light guns because we wouldn’t have groovymame, right?

Mame emulates many things. Use it for sms and genesis as it does it perfectly.

I've never used RetroArch. I'm trying it now but have no clue how to map the Aimtrak.

Funny enough, I just thought that and I'll actually do exactly that.

Thanks again all!

you don’t have to map the aim track.  if you run retroarch in verbose, the dos window will tell you what mouse number retroarch sees it as.

then under player 1 reassign, select the mouse number that retroarch reported.

I'm attempting a set up now.
I've got the latest version of MAME (MAME 0.199 Official Binaries/mame0199b_32bit.exe).
I've got it installed in MALA, pointed to the EXE, and I've added my Sega Master System US ROM set folder into the MAME/ROMS folder. But it won't load any games for me.......

Any ideas as to what I've missed ?

EDIT :

I'm running Windows 7/32 Bit.

I've found RetroArch 1.6.9, however I'm unsure which version I should download.

you want the x86, the other is ragged for 64bit OS

i run rocketlauncher so it knows what command line to send to play sms games.  when i get home, i will see what that command line is.

side note, run mame by itself.  select sega master system and then set up your rom folder.  get it working in make first before trying to add to your front end.

Thanks @tony.silveira,

I got the X86 version downloaded.
I'll install that this week and mess around a little.

I've got MAME installed, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to select Sega Master System.
I've set the ROM folder, but I'm lost on how to select the emulator itself.
I'm running the newest version of MAME.

EDIT - I've checked Google and YouTube and can not seem to find the answer.

@tony.silveira,

No, not as of yet. Been so busy with other plans/projects I haven't revisited the PC.
Hopefully in the next few weeks.

I've been crazy busy as of late, doing some work around the house.
My new deck should be completed this weekend.
Kids b-day parties are now out of the way.
I'd love nothing more than to do a lil arcade work.

Tony I'll hit you up via email.

Thank you
