BYO Fortnite Controller ?
« on: July 04, 2018, 08:57:26 am »

I haven't started playing Fortnite yet but looking at the key bindings my first thought was "What's the best controller for this game". Seems the two standard options are: Gamepad or Mouse+keyboard. I don't know which is best, or the pro and cons of those.

So my questions for BYOAC is: what are the pros and cons of the standard solutions?  and can you devise a better interface?

I don`t know what this has to do with arcade controls, but the only way you can play shooters competitively is with mouse & keyboard, that`s not even a discussion.

Fortnite is on heavy rotation in our house...I don't play but I can tell you all about it, for example this season ends in 7 days.  And we don't know what will happen with the time-rift crack in the sky from the Visitor's rocket launch. ha ha ha.

anyway....we have it on Switch, PS4, Xbox1, and mobile devices.  And everyone says the Xbox1 controller layout is superior to PS4.
The xbox 1 controller takes batteries unless you buy the recharger upgrade.

I'm play Fortnite rarely, and die a lot.  Still, it's mouse/keyboard.  Access to all your keybinds, better aiming, just... yeah.  If you're really comfy with controller it'll work, but keyboard/mouse is king.

The main pros of kb/m is just that mouse-aiming is so much more accurate than just about anything else.  The main pro of gamepad is that you don't have to move for any keypress really, and at least for me, it's easier to hit things like certain weapon slots, etc. on a gamepad vs. a keyboard, just because I'm more used to it.  Fortnite doesn't seem quite as biased in favor of keyboard/mouse users as your standard shooters though, so I'd just basically say, if you wanna play on PC, use keyboard/mouse.  If you wanna play on console, just use the gamepad.  You're fine either way.

There's sooo many keys to bind in Fortnite I just don't think there's anything you could build that would be workable.  (Aim, Fire, Use, Reload, Sprint, Jump, Weapon Slots, Build Slots, probably some I'm forgetting.)

Though in seriousness, something like a half-keyboard (like those left gamepad things, whatever they're called), re-organized a bit, with a built-in mousepad or trackball actually COULD be kinda cool.

Now in not seriousness, hold on firing up MSPaint.

From what I'm reading (here and my own searches) mouse is best for aiming. That's fine because I will be starting with mouse and keyboard.

As a missile command player obvious first thought was: what would a trackball be like for aiming?

And then looking at all the key bindings I thought about a custom button pad.

I need to get playing and then I'll know what I'm talking about.  I know that one of the drawbacks of controllers is the need to multifunction buttons which means modeswapping, but I wonder if there could be a button set-up that uses a bit of that, eg swap between attack and defense(build) mode. Hitting the defense mode button could also run a little cheat macro to build a simple defense (maybe)

i'd add a joystick on the left side and map that to wasd. i did something similar on my arcade and mastered unreal tournament, but that was many years ago. i now use a logitech g13 and a mouse to play first person shooters.

share what you make.

I feel like there's something I'm missing with this game....

The us vs. the world thing is kinda fun.  I didn't think I'd enjoy it too much, but the building especially adds a cool layer of appeal (and makes it smurfin' hard)

Price is right too, I assume that helps, especially with the kids.

As a missile command player obvious first thought was: what would a trackball be like for aiming?

And then looking at all the key bindings I thought about a custom button pad.

I wonder this as well!  I've heard a few FPS players using trackballs, and The Grid (if anybody played that game) in the arcades controlled really nicely.

Those keys are the tricky part: there's a good number of buttons that need to be no-brainer, instant-press if you're gonna not get knocked around.  Only game I have EVER played that made me think my mouse doesn't have enough buttons ;)

I'd love to see what you come up with too.  I was being silly with my early response but I actually got to thinking seriously about this, now I'm picturing a big control-panel slab where the entire top is covered with mouse-pad material, with "WASD" keys and an extensive button panel on the left and kinda thinking it'd be hella-awesome.  Keep us posted if you come up with anything :)

Yeah I don't get the appeal to it either. The building aspect is annoying, especially the way high level players use it, and it's pretty much a gimmick that separates this game from PUBG or any of the other billion "Battle Royale" games out there.

It is a far different level of intuition involved than playing Defender if that is where you engineering mind was going.

Kids with Minecraft experience have the building process on lock.  The master players are the ones you can build in a flash.

Strategy wise shooting from the high ground is an advantage.

And there is a bit of predictive Robotron in it, when you are having a shootout, people jump up and down.  you can get suckered into wanting to shooting at the dynamic arcing target, but it's more like tanks in robotron.  aim where they are going to land which gives a static target.

Then it simply comes down to the casino aspect. you need to get lucky enough to get certain guns from the arsenal and know how to use them in the various scenarios.  example you want the fast load shotgun in close range, where you can't easily snipe someone with a scoped rifle at close range.
killing someone and ending up with an rpg and ammo toward the end of the game is also beneficial for deconstructing someone's tower.
tons of depth....i don't play, i just sit and watch a lot of it.  Very deep game when you study it from the design element.
the dances thrown in are a massive hook for the new generation of gamers.  It's viral.   Learn the floss, Jimmer!

crap graphics = higher framerates = (supposedly) better gameplay performance

competitive first person shooter players often play on low settings to maximise frame rates and eliminate lag due to computer processing limitations...that's the thought behind it anyways.

also, i thought you had to play Fortnite against other people on the same console.  So the controller experience is normalized.
Is there a way to play from a fast PC with a mouse, against console players?

man, the amount of people online playing at any moment during 24 hours is pretty staggering amongst all the various multiplayer games out there.
Rocket League this past winter on Switch, would say it had 80,000 people at any given time online playing when they had it on.

Season 5 coming up is really getting hyped.  Pirates and Pyramids time-warped into the playfield due to the visitor's rocket launch that cracked a time-space warp into the sky.  They have quite a hype storyline going along with all the retro dances that are going viral with kids.  do the floss, jimmer.

Yeah, but I'm not sure exactly what it entails.  I only know bc I was able to figure out how to play with my buddy who plays on PS4... I think we both had to flag some different settings though.

I *think* as I recall, if you're playing cross-platform you're basically always on the PC servers so you don't end up with one PC player annihilating an entire server of console players, for instance.  So your PC game might have a couple of console players but not many, whereas if you log on console, you'll only be playing against other console players.  Or something like that.  I dunno, I'm over 30 so everything involved in Fortnite has to be inherently confusing, that's how life works.

I'm 50.  the culture shock for me started for me back in the Nintendo 007 days, couldn't get into that first person shooter thing.  Although I remember thinking Doom was a clever design, or whatever that archaic 3d maze game was back in the dos days.  Which reminds me that one year a bunch of gamer IT nerds at my company got fired for playing Quake across the backend company servers. ha.

Fortnite is definitely not going to be for most of the older arcade crowd.  But it did a great job of pulling over the Minecraft crowd.  One of the challenges they were doing the other night was to get 4 players to dance on disco squares which raised a disco ball and gave each player 100 vbucks, effectively a dollar to spend on virtual accessories.  Said dances can be up to 2000 vbucks, or 20 bucks and folks are spending money left and right to be a part of it.  The company is raking in millions and millions.  wild times in video game consumption.   Ready Player One does a good job of representing the idea of spending real life money in a virtual world, where the aunt's boyfriend cashed out on buying an accessory to try winning a virtual game.

Ha ha, well my friend we can go even farther into the strange world.  One of the challenges is to collect little rubber ducks from the various little water ways.

Or you can buy a pick ax that is a lolly pop.

It's pretty fun.  It's a social game though.  Play by your self and you'll get skewered.  It only gets fun when you mic up with some friends.  Anyway, as for the controls, from what I've read, if you are on console, use console controls.  If on PC, use K&M.  Supposedly the PS4 mouse conversion is not great and is not a significant advantage over the mouse.

I bet you hear about the attention the game gets soon enough.

Like any other game, its a matter of personal taste.  I play a few BR games.  Fortnite is fun for me with my gamer friends.  We play to win and get kills, not to dance, but to each his/her own.

Personally, I find pac-man to be boring as hell and always have.  I am 50 years old.  Pac-man never did if for me.   :dunno
Does that make pac-man a bad game?  No, just not my taste.   Same goes for fortnite - if you don't like it don't play it.

As far as the controller discussion goes its pretty simple: PC = MASTER RACE.  Mouse and keyboard or get pwned kid :)

I agree.  Fortnite isn't for me but I love the passion around it and enjoy watching my son play it--occasionally anyway.

My 13 year old son talked me into this game.  One of the things I tried to do was resurrect my old Microsoft Dual Strike controller. I had to drag that thing kicking and screaming into this decade (and Windows 10).  I tried the XBox 360 CE software to get the game to think I had an Xbox controller; that sort of worked. But Joy2Key was the hero. I could adjust the mouse movement and assign special shift keys to assign two or three different actions to one key. I still use the mouse and keyboard while I get used to my old controller.
Good luck with your setup,
TacoTownCharlie
