Project Spectrum [final stage]
« on: July 01, 2018, 04:30:02 am »
I started with some cabinet made of scaffolding wood, but that just didn't feel "authentic" enough. Than, after some good advice, I made my "own" cabinet design in Sketchup, based on the Galaga cabinet, but adjusted to become more slim. The theme back then was The Dutch, but that was just too... eehm... orange.
I am still going with that design though, but decided on some retro side-art and eventually some more quality stuff (controls, etc.).

Cabinet design:

I added the SKP's and side art files (without the design) of the most panels below. Please bear in mind that the 90 degree corners of the side panels aren't exactly 90 degrees (made a small miscalculation) and the height might be not your personal preference (I also added about an inch (3 cm) at the bottom as I wanted to use leds below the cab).

I asked a former colleague (art director at my former job) to design some retro art and it turned out pretty well (I did the button layout on the control panel myself):

Marquee (not decided on the name of the cabinet yet):

Control panel (one service button that works as a shift button and two player buttons):

Side art and kick panel:

I have printed the side panels on A3 paper and taped it together so I could stencil it on MDF. Now I have to start with the real woodwork (everything is cut to measure though, except the side panels).

I like the slimmed down profile.  I have a friend who has been bugging me to build him a mame cab and your design would fit the bill nicely.  For him I would probably order up galaga artwork for CP, bezel, marquee and coin door panel - did you keep all those dimensions and just slim down the depth?

I was just thinking there weren't enough Galaga themed cabinets. I am so glad another one is in the works.

If I read this correctly, the color bars from the CP overhang and the front plate will be kinda disconnected, vertical bars from the CP will sit on horizontal bars from the kickplate. I would connect those bars like shown on the right.

Maybe you could connect them using arcs, so that it doesn't look so blocky.

I also would change the bars in the marquee so that they connect to those of the CP.

The front is almost the same, the top back is a bit more curved. If you like I can provide the AI and/or SKP files.

If I read this correctly, the color bars from the CP overhang and the front plate will be kinda disconnected, vertical bars from the CP will sit on horizontal bars from the kickplate. I would connect those bars like shown on the right.

I also would change the bars in the marquee so that they connect to those of the CP.

I realised that as well, but wanted to see it rendered in Sketchup before I do some big changes. Unfortunately I am running the free version of Sketchup at the moment that doesn't import textures. Might download some "test-version" later.
I don't think I like the alternative though, so that would mean changing the art quite drastically or the cabinet design maybe (so the overhang will be bigger).

---edit---
Might do something like this maybe:

That way the control panel stripes and the stripes that go over the kick plate won't be connected...

That would still leave the CP overhang bars kinda hanging in the air. Maybe you could give them a rounded end?

Having a hard time scaling and positioning the textures, but it gives an ok view:

I think it looks ok. Especially from all angles.  The marquee is just a different part and I like it diagonal there better. The control panel stripes seem hanging loose a bit, but I think its ok. Rounding it off just doesn't feel right.

Opinions?

I like it.  Good shape and proportions.

I think I'd try dropping the bottom-most quarter rainbows off the sides.  I think the big upper stripe is doing everything that needs done, there.

Looks really good.  I agree - I would drop the bottom rainbow.

The black coin door will look great there!

Then it would become something like this.

I do agree this looks good as well, but maybe a bit "boring"?

---edit---

Have to decide on the color for t-molding and controls still. I currently have white, but I guess that's more white than the white yellowish in the art. So as the arcs have black in it, that might look nice.

Just ordered the artwork, without the bottom arc. Just didn't decide on the name yet, so I didn't order the marquee.

So for a name... ARC-cade is applicable, yet cheesy. Just Arcade does the job as well. But I would like something more original. Will stay thinking for a while. But if someone has any ideas, feel free.

Nice clean looking cabinet, the moment I saw the graphics I instantly thought of Sinclair spectrum, 8bit computer back in the 80s has a very similar rainbow stripe for its logo -

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX_Spectrum

Sinclair zx spectrum is too long a name so how about "spectrum" (minus the speech marks) ?

Finally started woodworking. Took me some time to finally pick up the router and jig saw, but I began. After quite some saw dust I managed to do an ok side.

Hopefully tomorrow I will do the other side (if the flush trim bit I ordered fits my new router). The rest of the wood should already be mostly cut to size already.

Should T-molding be all around actually? So also bottom and backside?

I've seen it done multiple ways barry.  The most common is where it is wrapped around the entire perimeter of the side and ends at the bottom.  Whether it meets in the center or not.  Stapling is also an option at the bottom.

Look at @ 56:20 to see what I mean.  One staple on either side of the t molding is enough.  This guy got a little out of hand.  He did not meet his ends together but I've seen it both ways.  Meeting and not meeting.

Do it all the way around - it’ll protect the bottom of the plywood from snagging and splintering.

Looks like he used MDF not plywood ;) either way it should protect the ends, on my last 2 bartops i used chrome trim all the way round.

Thanks guys. I already noticed the hard way that MDF isn't really forgiving when it hits a wall or something. Luckily it was the uncut side panel that got a quite deep bump (but I can cut that off).
T-molding all around it is. Will have to buy me some new T-molding probably then as I don't think I have enough. But at least I can then change colors still!  ;D

And we have the next side panel. Including the t-molding slot... all around. The slot is a tad too wide (2mm), so the t-molding is peeled out easily. So I will glue that later on...

Yes, but the same thought process still applies. I’ve seen tons of cab bottoms get torn up without that protection.

And I made a bit more progress. The base is standing. And from now it should go quite (relatively) fast...

I was actually quite amazed by how wide it looks. I hope I can get it downstairs when finally assembled (it's in the attic now). Or maybe I should assemble the whole downstairs... Control panel is a bit more than 25 inches wide (+ 2x 3/4 inch).

Most interior doors are 28-30" wide so you should be OK but I'd do a bit of measuring just to be safe.  Love the design and the art on this one.

Thanks!

The problem isn't exactly the doors, but more the stairs. I couldn't even get a small IKEA bank up the stairs because of the turn it makes. Might have to make a cardboard version just to test if we can get it downstairs  ;D

Or just not glue the whole...

I am in the process of placing the control panel at a small angle. Just wondering if it's too steep?

I'm not good at guessing the angle, so I won't even try.

I guess it feels ok. But unfortunately I forgot to route a space for the joysticks. I did have spare wood for a new control panel, so I routed that. But I guess the height setting of the router changed (too loose?) and P2 was routed to approx 1-2 mm mdf left.

So now I can do three things.

  • Fill up the P2 a bit. (will it be strong enough?)
  • Get longer shafts for the servo-stiks. (longer throw, would I dislike that?)
  • Get new wood and try again. (won't fit as nice as the current panels probably)

What would you guys do?

All the wood was cut at the same time, so the settings of the saw would have been exactly the same for the width of the cabinet probably. I'm afraid that when I order new wood (or cut it myself) it could be off a mm or so (don't have the best experience with wood ordered to size).

what type of router do you have a full sized one plunge type or a trimmer ?

bought a trimmer like the one below a couple of years ago, so much easier to use and smaller, can be used one handed if you feel safe enough and have the grip strength :)

before someone chimes in it's a knock off of a well known brand that begins with M but at a quarter of  the price, maybe not for trade use but perfectly fine for the home diy'er.

how thick is the panel, maybe you don't have to route if the joysticks are long enough ?

It's a Bosch plunge router. It works quite well, but I guess I pressed too hard so it went through the depth setting, leaving just 1-2 mm of board.

The panel is 18 mm (3/4"), so I believe without the longer shafts it won't work that well.

I did exactly the same thing with my bartop.  What I did to fix was get a couple of pieces of hardboard, cut them to size to fit the routed out square, glued the crap out of them used some clamps to hold tightly, waited a day for glue to set and then redrilled the joystick hole.  I undermounted with inserts and had no problems at all.
