help with mame rom filtering
« on: June 19, 2018, 06:45:25 am »
I wanted to create a custome mame.xml for 0.197 using Romlister or other tool but having a problem with the filtering rules...

I can't seem to find a rule that will allow the inclusion of the mslug games in the xml. Can anybody help??

when I check the supporting files (catver, nplayers, controls.xml) I find the following:

cat ver 197 shows them all as 'platform / shooter scrolling'.
nplayers 197 shows them all as '2P sim'
controls.xml doesn't include mslug games - THIS seems to be the problem. IS this a known issue?

So to be clear in romlister if I select the following as an example

mslug games are not included in the output file.
If I add mslug to the controls.xml then it is included in the filtered mame.xml.
In fact the filtered list only includes around 800 roms, which is much less than the 2000 - 3000 roms I expected based on my previous filtered mame list.

I also tried the lightspeed filtering tool and for some reason that would include mslug5 but none others.
I tried simple arcade multifilter but the romset generated didn't inculde mslug games.

I don't remember having this problem when I last filtered my list (circa mame 0.15x), though perhaps I did need to add them in manually.

If the mslug games are missing then there is potential for many others to be missing too, and I don't want a list that may miss the kind of games I like.

Is there a more complete controls.xml file?? It seems that many games could be missing with the latest version.
Or is there a way to include ALL games that are not in controls.xml? (subject to them also fitting the other criteria I specified above)

I'm not familiar with Romlister, but you could grab one of the filtered XML files from the RetroFE website. One of those might be covering all the games you want.

Wow, thanks,  there's loads of choice there so something might work out. I'll have a look properly when not on my phone.

I'm still interested in solving the original problem though if anybody's got the answer.
