Button Layout - Opinions Wanted!
« on: June 12, 2018, 11:07:14 am »
I posted this in my project thread but thought I'd get more responses here.  I am curious to hear what everyone thinks is the best out of the 4 options below (or if there is something even better I'm not thinking of).  This is a small bartop and the buttons are 24mm (Seimitsu) with the ability to label them.  The main CP will just have the joystick and a 6-button SF layout.  I want simplicity over all else so no hotkeys or shifting button functions to get rid of a few.

Thanks!!

#1

This puts all 5 admin buttons in one spot above the CP and below the monitor leaving the front of the CP blank.  EXIT is isolated, but I worry that there is too much going on here.

#2

This layout would align EXIT and PAUSE and align P2 and COIN (each set 1/2" in from edge on the admin panel and front of the CP).  This layout is nice in that you aren't really going to be accidentally pressing any buttons but I'm not sure what to think about a solitary button in 3 out of the 4 "corners".  It's not bad though.

#3

This layout has COIN and PAUSE on the front of the CP - I could space these any way I want (a button width apart?) but they would be generally centered.  I kind of like this one too and it's not like it matters if you hit COIN while reaching to PAUSE while playing (although it may be a slightly bigger deal the other way around).

#4

This layout has COIN and PAUSE lined up to the right with P1 START and P2 START.  This is the most uniform layout (I think) and still isolates EXIT nicely.  The same issue with #3 is present here (pressing COIN or PAUSE when you mean to hit the other).  This one is pleasing to the eye as well.

I'm leaning towards #3 or #4... I think.  Thoughts?

coin on CP front where you wrote "CP Front".

start buttons on the actual CP , top right corner, side by side or over under.  Exit as the lone button on the "bezel" all the way to the left, big red button with a black X

I know you dont want shifted keys but down+start for pause. If you must have a pause button, put it on the right side of the "bezel" panel.

I could probably photoshop it for you when I get home, but I only have MSPaint at my new gig :)

I'm not sure there is room for buttons on the CP.  The joystick and buttons take up almost all of the surface and I'm afraid adding buttons there would clutter things up.

What about these layouts?

#5

COIN in the middle of the front CP panel and everything else up top.

#6

No bezel and everything on the front of the CP.

#5 with P1 & P2 centered.

Holy crap this would result in a symmetrical layout!

I think the coin button would look equally as good on the right side of the front panel.
It doesn't mimic a real cab, but would feel correct ergonomically IMO.
One might be better than the other for internal clearances depending on your controls.

Maybe put the pause button on the side, or on the back, and move the Coin button there? I just think it looks a bit out of place in the front middle. But overall I like 7

Thanks guys... #7 it is.  Except I'm leaning toward no PAUSE button even though I really want to squeeze it in.  Perhaps I can make "P1+P2" or "Down+Coin" work as the pause function (or something like that).  I like the 4 buttons on the Admin panel and I agree that one lone button on the front of the CP looks a bit odd.
