Arcade Aquarium
« on: June 08, 2018, 08:23:22 am »
I knew this day had to come, but it is a massive job so I put it off...until now.

I moved my arcade into a room that used to be a garage. It is an easy in and out of the house. The problem is that is also the room that my aquarium is in.

I know what you are all thinking. Obviously I should incorporate the aquarium into an arcade cabinet. The problem is that it is too small for most of the widescreen builds here. It is only six feet wide.

I am going to move the tank into my basement. The thought of a tank failure is in the back of my head. 150 gallons of water on the floor would not be good for my games.

There is also the fact that I have had these fish since they were the size of guppies. They are 7 years old now, and I am a little nervous about shocking them with a transfer like this. I have to drain the tank completely and remove the gravel. I have a hundred gallon tank to house them until the move is complete so I am fairly confident the move won't kill them. It would be a shame to lose any of them. I have 4 koi in the tank.

Mate I have a cool idea idea for you!

This may seem a little crazy though at first but bare with me....

Why dont you build a arcade machine around the fish tank!?

Then you save space, get 2 of your fave things in one place and nobody will of ever done it before!!

Cool eh!?

 I love maintaining aquariums. Just wish I had the time. It seems like within a year, every tank I stock ends looking like it is filled with swamp water from the legion of doom's headquarters.

Koi are easy. They are very dirty in that they poop a lot compared to other fish. They are very hearty though. You don't heat the water so bacteria and algae don't flourish like they do in tropical tanks. My filter turns the tank volume over about 4 times an hour. I have a canister filter that I need to clean out once every three months. It was every six months until the fish got really big. It takes 15 minutes to clean the filter.

I change about 10 percent of the water out every other week. That takes about 20 minutes. I siphon the water into a drain pipe behind the tank. I have a spigot and hose right next to the tank for filling. No buckets. I never use chemicals of any kind. I never replace the filter elements. I just clean them so they don't restrict flow.

My water stays really clear. The glass can accumulate algae if I get lazy.

Why not leave the aquarium in your garage and a few games in your house?  I've got arcade cabins in 3 rooms of my house.  And I'm.. normal....ish.

The problem is that this room makes a really nice arcade room. The in progress cab and the two monitors are in my shop now instead of the middle of the floor.

I can add several more games in here until they spill over into the living room. The aquarium takes up the place of three cabs.

I also want to add an overflow to my aquarium. I have plans for a 100 gallon sump filter. That will take up a lot of space.

Multiple pins are forthcoming. I have to get through my kitchen remodel before I can lay out the cabbage for some pins.

Hey Titch. If you ever make the trip to the US and you find yourself near Chicago just let me know. We can tilt back a few pints.

I have seen some really sweet arcade rooms online. I have been to Casa de Yotsuya. He has a nice room put together.

As of right now I just have a pile of games in a room. I need to put it all together for a real arcade experience.

It does give me that tingly feeling when all of the games are on and the room is full of people.

Will do mate,

Ide love a true arcade games room like that but a house big enough to do it over here would prob cost me both my kidneys lol

Thats why I only have the mame upright and the neo geo bartop.
But I do have a original cab being repairedat the moment which will be max capacity for me!

I am going to move the tank into my basement.

As someone who has dealt with three different leaks on two different tanks (including salt-water) I would never put a 50+ gallon tank on a main floor again. Basement only with proper drainage.

I picked up the Tempest earlier this year.
That is the only game I paid an uncomfortable sum for. The guy I bought it from stands behind his work. He has a warehouse near me.

My wife died January 3, 2015. I don't think she will be mad.

That is one area where I don't want to joke around.

Thomas_surles I don't expect you to know my personal history. I am not upset.

The only reason I am mentioning it is I request no more jokes along that line. Although she would have appreciated the humor when she was alive.

You guys can rip me as brutally as you want. I can take it.

I didn't want to bring people down, but she was my best friend and I lost her in the blink of an eye to a heart attack.

I hate the fact that a silly joke this innocuous brings up these feelings, but it does sometimes.

Sorry Thomas. I totally ruined your joke.

Mike I'm sorry to hear that wife passed away.  It is always good to hear when anyone on here holds their family in high regard or speaks well of them.  I feel it makes, to me at least, everyone on here more human and not just words on a web page.

She loved those fish. That is the main reason I am nervous about moving them.

Just so you have a face to go with the story. This is my favorite picture of her, probably because she hated it.

Christina Marie Aberle
She was 37 years old when she died of a heart attack. The autopsy found nothing.

I apologize if I am oversharing. I want everyone I ever meet to know what the world is missing.
She was kind to everyone and always spoke her mind. She was independent, but also accepted help graciously.
I can't put together words into sentences that adequately describe the luminous human being that she was.

Mike, So sorry to hear of your tragic loss, Sounds like your life was made so much better just for having your wife in it.
(I fully understand you not wanting any more jokes, my wife and her health is one of the few things I won't joke about)

Anyway back to the original query, Its been a long time since I kept any fish, But when I last had them and moved them I did pretty much what you are planning, I had a holder tank which I filled with gravel and water from the existing tank (Was about 25% volume of new tank) the fish were happy in there for the day it took to get everything sorted out.  I then washed all the gravel from the old tank, put into the new one, filled to about 60% full and then added water/fish from the holder tank. I then carefully and gently topped up the tank. I'll be honest the fish were a bit unappy for a day or two at most but no major traumas.  Hope that helps.

Thanks.
I have a 100 gallon stock tank that I am going to use as a sump. I am going to transfer the monsters into that while I empty the tank. Most of the tank water will go in the sump. I can even run my cannister filter in the sump while I dink around with the tank setup. The new aquarium stand is almost completed. I should be done with this project this weekend.

Thanks Ian. I just watched a VHS of part of the first time I met her. She lived in a crap hole apartment with her mom just off South 27th street in Milwaukee. She was recently divorced with a 7 month old kid. Her husband cheated on her and disappeared. She was trying to put her life back together. My company owned a retail store on 27th Street. There was a dive bar (and that is being generous) less than a block away. I stopped in the bar with a couple employees after the store closed. She was bar tending. We talked for awhile as a group. When she mentioned she had a daughter the area around her cleared out.

She asked me if I liked karaoke, and I said F**k no. She said "Good we are next. Do you know Hungry Like the Wolf?"

I still have the VHS tape from the karaoke company. I transferred it to digital, but I still like watching the VHS tape on my CRT tv once a year.

After watching the tape I can see the way we looked at each other. It was obvious from the start.

My daughter is 20 years old now.

I can't remember the name. It was on South 27th. This was 20 years ago. There was a Cigarette Depot in the same building as an Indian restaurant nearby. There was a mall across 27th, but that was torn down.

I am pretty sure this is it. I can't remember if the name is the same, but it looks classier in this Google pic than it did 20 years ago.

She loved those fish. That is the main reason I am nervous about moving them.

Just so you have a face to go with the story. This is my favorite picture of her, probably because she hated it.

I agree. If I don't like something I say I don't like it. I also use a lot of sarcasm. I do that in real life too. If someone takes themselves so seriously that they can't take a joke I don't want to hang out with them. I have a few college friends that freakin' hated me when they met me. Once they figured out that I would give them the shirt off my back, they are some of my closest friends to this day. They got used to the fact that there is no ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- with me. Especially now with the people I have lost, life is too fleeting to give a rats ass if someone doesn't like my honest opinion.

I do try to moderate my responses when someone makes it clear they have decided on a certain course with their build. If someone tells me to back off I will respect that. It doesn't do anyone any good if I offer input that is unwanted. I will screw with someone that wants to be a jerk about it though.

I respect Lew's opinion. I think he is coming from a place of honesty. Although I don't think I am the bully he makes me out to be. I really care about this stuff and I have strong opinions. This is the only social media platform I contribute to.

I would definitely sit down with Lew and toss back a few beers or some good bourbon. I can hang out with people I disagree with any time.

It is dishonesty I cannot stand. I have no time for people who try to play a character online. You people know who you are. And everyone else knows too.

I have my aquarium stand built. I have everything I need to build the 100 gallon sump. I just need the time to actually drain the aquarium, shovel out all of the gravel, move the tank, set up the sump, fill the tank, and reintroduce the fish to their tank. This week I am building a bass guitar speaker cabinet for my son's birthday. Hopefully I will have time this weekend for the fish relocation.

Nice job dick'n up the thread.

For the record, what you posted was a private PM that you initiated because I was hurting your feelings or something. Not sure what the point of bringing our private conversation into the forum. Bad form. And there is a part of that conversation you conveniently omitted.

Actually, I don't hate you. I think you're just fine.

nope #sand (that's pound , not hashtag!)

Here's the full conversation.

Actually, I don't hate you. I think you're just fine.

I made fun of Haze for posting like a --cream-filled twinkie-- . Haze isnt a newb. Its fine to hate me, I dont give a ---fudgesicle--- , but pretending you dont is a dick move. Im not Steve I dont have multiple logins.

Pretty please with sugar on top , link me to a thread where I picked on a noob.

I'm not searching for threads where I think you were being a jerk. I've seen it enough. Besides, you'll just write it off as being honest or something.

Sorry, if anything I like you. Go to bed, you're drunk.

Im straight edge, I dont drink :)

You cant find any posts, because they dont exist, and if they do they are likely 4+ years old.
Isnt it super easy to just accuse people of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- then not have to prove it?  You've seen it enough so it shouldnt be hard to find, just click my name, then my post history, hell search my username in a section and find em that way.

If you cant prove it, dont accuse me of it.

I could flip this and ask you to prove to me where I accused you of it. You won't find anything.

Besides, even if you did find something, I would tell you that I was being a straight shooter and you are being a over-sensitive pansy who needs a safe space. See how this works?

So you start the ball by saying you don't like that I pick on newbs. Then at the end you say "prove to me where I accused you of it" even though your first reply accuses me of it.  Instead of even attempting to have a  glimmer of a conversation you immediate dismiss anything that differs from your opinion as me writing it off. That not how dialog works.

So please feel free to ---fudgesicle--- off until you can either prove I went around picking on all the "n00bs" or until you retract your asinine accusation.
Its also quite childish to constantly say someone is drunk. My dad was an alcoholic , my uncle got killed by a drunk driver.  I dont drink for a reason bean bag.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.

This is very bad form Malenko. And, if you're going to post a private PM, post all of it.

You started the conversation with this:
I never put 2 and 2 together that you hated me. I thought it was just friendly ribbing, but then it dawned on me, you have some kind of chip on your shoulder.

I've read plenty of his posts Mike, and unfortunately, plenty of yours. I'm guessing you aren't as big of a weenie in real life, but who knows. You're kinda like a Malenko sidekick or something.

go ---fudgesicle--- yourself and leave me out of your posts. keeping it in PMs cause I dont really wanna do it in public.

You don't want to do it public huh? Oh, geez...

You really don't see the irony in taking offense at me calling you out for what I think you are, but it's ok for you to call people out for what you think they are? You want a safe space, gold star, or whatever thing it is you say to justify being a jerk? Would that make you feel better? Here you go:

No offense intended on the drinking thing. If I had remembered you don't drink, I would have suggested that you needed a beer or three.

I'm going to bed. If you have some more emotional baggage you want to unload, save it till the morning. I'd prefer just be done with it, but as you can see by the IM's - you're not real good at letting it go.

This is very bad form Malenko. And, if you're going to post a private PM, post all of it.

I posted all I had, I dont keep sent messages. I thought it was obvious what you first posted was a reply to something I sent you.   This is going in circles anyway.

You really don't see the irony in taking offense at me calling you out for what I think you are, but it's ok for you to call people out for what you think they are? You want a safe space, gold star, or whatever thing it is you say to justify being a jerk?
I believe this is the source of our disconnect. You accused me of something and I asked you to back it up, something you've never done. You are allowed to call me out all you want, but it doesnt hurt to ya know, have proof , right?   I however don't call people out on "what they are" , well other than X2 who obviously needs help. I don't pick on people but I did used to give feedback on projects. Then this place changed and every single piece of feedback given that wasnt gold stars and candy bars was taken as an attack for some reason.  I stopped posting and then you implied I didnt post because all I did was thrash "n00bs".

TL;DR You talked ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- without proof, I never talked ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on n00bs.

Mike, sorry to ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- all over this thread.

I see how you're confused. You think because I won't go searching through the threads to find you being a jerk to someone is the same as you not being a jerk. We've played this game. I've pointed it out and your canned response is that you're not picking on anyone, you're telling it how it is and you're sick of the gold-stars-for-everyone and safe spaces mentality.

Many of your threads have been post helled. Heck, I think you even brag about your post helled threads. My point is, there is no reason for me to find the threads where you are doing all the things I'm saying because you dismiss them. You don't see it, even though we've had plenty of new people feel jumped.

Just in this thread you posted PM's and got caught not providing all the context, and both of those things are not a cool move.

Still in circles we go.

I never said I wasn't a jerk. I said I didn't troll noobs. I can only supply a canned answer because I don't know the specifics of the posts you taken issue with.

My point is I haven't dismissed anything, you havn't shown anything worth dismissing.  Even when I did post criticisms on projects threads it was always about the project and never about the poster.

Oh my god Mike.  I can't believe you sometimes.  How in the hell can you like pancakes?  Only normal people like waffles.  This is why I can't be on this forum anymore.  People have an opinion that they shouldn't share.  To me liking pancakes is akin to eating acid.  How could you?

Just in this thread you posted PM's and got caught not providing all the context, and both of those things are not a cool move.

While I did provide the full context, I do agree it was a dick move of me to post a private message. For that I do apologize. I have sent you one more PM hopefully to clear the air , it doesn't really merit a reply.  I wash my hands of this and plan to just move forward.  Posting it was quite cathartic, so there is that.

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I believe the word you are looking for is WASP.  Now please be so kind as to retire to the kitchen and prepare my brunch of waffles and pancakes.   :laugh2:

Thanks.  I'm reasonably certain he got a write up along with several photos in an out of print book called Apocalypse Culture II.  I decided to put my money where my money is, and bought a copy this afternoon.  It's up there on the "stupidest purchase ever" list.  Stay tuned.

Nah, $15 shipped.  There's about 4 used copies out there on book sites at that price point.  A quick googling implies that the companies are legit.

https://www.alibris.com/booksearch?keyword=Apocalypse+Culture+II&mtype=B&hs.x=0&hs.y=0&hs=Submit

Buyer beware.  Do what thou wilt.

The irony is that I grew up with Feral House books everywhere in my house, but not this one.  I can remember seeing this and volume 1 in book stores.  Never thought to open either one up.  They may have been in plastic as I recall there was a "this book is banned!" marketing shtick.  There's a PDF floating around of volume 1, but I went ahead and dropped $10 on a hard copy.

Let me know on that KLOV.  Cash in hand, even for a PDF.  I've e-mailed probably 5 different addresses that purported to be Mr. Awesome and never got a response, but his websites seem to come and go.

The Playgirl ad is 100% real, BTW.  Waded through a lot of soft ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- and eye liner to confirm that one.

I know everyone is jumping out of their skin waiting for the resolution of my aquarium move. ::)

I kind of forgot to update this.

I decided that the fish needed more than just the additional water volume that a sump would provide. I decided to move them into a 300 gallon stock tank. I measured my doorways and the basement staircase. the tank is 68"x63"x25". The doorways would be easy. The staircase was a close call. My estimate was off by about 2 inches. I had to remove 2 stair treads and it fit beautifully.

I had to cut the carpet off of the two stairs to get them out. After I put the stairs back in place, my cats will not step on them. They jump over those 2 stairs every time.

Here are the fish getting fed in their new home.

I plan on building a small deck around the tank. I will also add a turtle basking area so I can throw a couple turtles into my new basement pond.

I haven't seen The Shape of Water but I understand that eventually you're going to start humping those fish.

Admittedly, given enough time and space to grow, koi do develop some disturbingly human DSL.

It seems like a bad idea to me.  Typically people try to keep moisture OUT of their basement.  Mold could seriously be an issue.

The frame I am building will have an acrylic cover. I have a good dehumidifier. People keep much larger indoor ponds and aquariums than this without any moisture issues.

Right now it is 70 degrees outside with 97 percent humidity. It has been raining hard for days. My basement humidity is 55 percent.
