I'd probably do the cuts on the MDF first -- sand down a bit to make everything smooth and then apply the art - then use an exacto knife ( razor blade) to cut the vinyl -that way you have the drilled hole in the MDF as a cutting edge for the exacto knife to follow which should give a cleaner cut. Cutting through both might work but I'd be worried that it might get small bits of MDF dust under the artwork making the edge lift ( that dust gets everywhere ! )

IF you need to line up the art you could always tape the art on top of the CP with a few pieces of painters tape without removing the backing then once it's lined up drill the center holes through both - remove the art - drill the holes in the MDF - clean the surface - put on the art - cut the holes through the art with the exacto knife following the cut holes in the MDF

Either that or use the sandwich method.

- apply the artwork

- use the awl to punch a hole through the +

- use a small drillbit to drill holes through the punched holes all the way through the mdf

- clamp a scrap piece of wood onto the top of the CP

- turn the whole thing upside down

- use the forstner bit to drill the holes, making sure that you are well into the scrap wood before you stop drilling

Thanks guys - I think I have it sorted out in my head... I hope.  My plan is to place the art exactly where I want it (not permanently), punch the center holes, peel back the top 1/2 while keeping the bottom 1/2 secure and use the Foerstner bit to drill out the buttons.  Repeat for the other half.  Then, with the art still clamped in place I can peel back the paper for the adhesive doing 1/2 at a time and hopefully stick it down accurately.

___________

So... I'm trying to print the art files on paper just to make sure everything lines up properly and I have no idea how to print them to the proper size.  I have PNG files, which seem to want to print to the size of the paper and not the size of the file, and PSD files, which I can't even open because I don't have Photoshop.  Can anyone explain how to do this?  Everything is located HERE if it helps.

Also, the PNG files were sent at 200 dpi but the artist said this can easily be changed to 300 dpi if necessary.  I was under the impression that 300 dpi is what should be used for printing.  I need some help with that too!

GIMP - https://www.gimp.org/

should be able to open the PSD files but sometimes doesn't like some layers, worth a try ?

PNG,  open it with MS Paint then click File(Icon on the top left) -> Print -> Page Setup -> Scaling -> Adjust to 100% normal size. Then just print.

OK - I got it printed on some regular paper, cut out the shapes and taped it all together to get full sized art.  You guys were right all along.  The border on the side art has to go.  It doesn't line up perfectly (my fault I guess because my initial dimensions were just measured from my pattern by hand).  So now I need to figure out how to remove that layer in the PSD files (and any shadows that may have been added?) and oh yeah I need to get Photoshop and also figure out how to use it.  Ugh.

The good news though is that the art looks fantastic printed out and taped to the cabinet (ignoring the off center border).  I can't wait to finish this thing up.!

Assuming the artist didn’t merge the layers it takes two seconds in Photoshop.  If I were at home I would take care of it for you.

Really like the way this is turning out. Can’t wait to see the final product.

yeah I can take out the layer if you want. in photoshop you can either hide it, or delete it.

Wow that would actually be awesome - the PSD files are HERE.

The white border would have to be removed from BOTH side art files (the original and the mirror).  Also, if it is easy enough, in addition to the revised PSD files, can you make a PDF file out of both of them that I can print at home for testing?  Just want to be 100% sure of everything before sending it off to the real printer.  If one of you could do this for me it would be a huge help!

Theres a white border (1 inch outline from the outer edges) and theres a white edge (artwork has a has a very small white outline on the outermost edge).  You want both removed or just the white border?  I also assume you want the green outline removed as well?

Scratch that, Malenko gonna need you to take this one.  I’m on CS4 and I noticed something was off, it’s stripping the shadow layers in the robot.  If I flatten the image it’s there.  I’ll try to get an updated version of Photoshop if you are having the same trouble.

I'm on CC 2014 I'll give it a go. I miss having access to the entire adobe line, but I dont have that job anymore.

EDIT: Is this what you want? (screen grab attached) or do you want the white outline around the cab axed as well?

Thanks!  The only thing I need removed is the thicker double white lines that the robot and the UFO are on top of (that are actually part of the art).  The other outer lines are guide lines for applying the art.  The entire piece is about 3/4" larger all the way around than it needs to be.

I saved  them as uncompressed PNGs.

if anything needs changed, LMK. Just tell me when you want the files deleted and I'll pull em down.

Thanks so much.  I'm DLing them now and if I have some time at work today I'll print it out for testing.  I hope to place the real art order this week...

Further on from my thread where we discussed possible options for pc for this bartop, i've stripped down a dell optiplex 3010 sff (intel i3), the motherboard is 245mm square, the psu as shown in the picture is quite small as well, whether that would fit in the base of the bartop i'm not sure without measurements, could always use an ssd or laptop HD to save some space.

Just a thought, from eBay.co.uk a similar pc can be bought for around £70, maybe a similar price range from your eBay ?

**edit** just realised mine is actually a desktop (DT) not a SFF hence the differences - http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/business/smb/merchandizing/en/Documents/Dell_OptiPlex_3010_spec_sheet.pdf

So the SFF motherboard should be smaller but would have a larger PSU to deal with  ???

Thanks firedance - according to the specs though there is no way one of these things would fit in my cab.  The interior width is only 9.5" and I probably only have 5 or 6" of depth to work with because of all the other stuff I have to cram inside.

No real update to report - I have pretty much finalized the art and just need to place the order to have it printed.  With school started and soccer, guitar lessons, flag football, etc. in full swing I haven't had much time to work on this thing.  Once we get into a routine and I can predict my schedule a little better I will get going on this again - I still plan on finishing by Halloween.  Once I apply the art I will actually be just about finished with the build part... just have to drill holes for the CP.

I have been messing with the Raspberry Pi and I've decided to try and create my own image.  I must have flashed my 32GB microSD card 25 times by now LOL.  I can get other people's images up and running but they are all far too bloated with crap for my tastes.  I have also figured out how to put the "stock" Retropie image on there and load up a few ROMs.  Now I just need to figure out how to create a layout, set up one button on/off, disable settings and some other stuff.

Correct - Though many of the SFF ( or USFF ) actually use an external PSU ( like a laptop PSU ) where the PSU is actually an external brick that could actually be placed outside the cabinet or in a different part of the cab with just the power wire running to the MOBO.

Like this dc7900 for $40 shipped ( PSU pic below ) -- https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Compaq-dc7900-Desktop-PC-Ultra-Slim-3-16GHz-2GB-RAM-w-Power-Supply/401518640040?hash=item5d7c603ba8:g:zl4AAOSw6Mxax-zS

yeah, that's true of usually USFF like you've pointed out, looks like that would still be too large for this build, pi is the way to go :)

Now I just need to figure out how to create a layout
Instead of creating a theme from scratch, it is much easier to re-skin an existing one.

https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Themes/

For example, "tronkyfran" is the same as "simple", but with different background pictures for the System menu.

The theme files are located in /etc/emulationstation/themes/, but you might have problem directly accesing/altering them due to file/directory permissions.

IIRC, here's the workaround I used:
- Load retropie on one SD and Raspbian (GUI) on another
- Boot to Raspbian GUI with the retropie SD in a USB reader and a thumbdrive with the desired pictures
- Open two file manager windows and go to /media where you'll find the thumb drive and the retropie SD directories
-- Navigate one window to the pictures on the thumb drive (source)
-- Navigate the other window to the theme, system, art directory with the pictures you want to replace (target)
- In the source window, copy the path
- In the target window, pulldown menu Tools -- "Run a command from current window"
-- If the filenames match ==> sudo cp [ctrl-V to paste path]/filename.jpg
-- If the filenames don't match ==> sudo cp [ctrl-V to paste path]/thumbdrive_filename.jpg filename.jpg

Wow thanks guys - this is super helpful.  I’m going to mess around today and see what I can come up with.

On the artwork front, I think the border dream is over - this is the best I could do.  It’s just not lining up like I had hoped and I really need to pull the trigger on ordering the art.

I think it will still look OK without it and hopefully the white t-molding will make it pop.

Any recommendations on the material to print on? Gameongrafix has a lot of choices.  I want to make this somewhat high quality so it can withstand some wear and tear.

I’ll be printing the marquee, side art and CP art.  Looking forward to finishing up this project...

... so in can start the next one!

I'm glad to hear it - I'm sure it will look great without it.  I just might have wanted to fill in the space between the UFO and robot and maybe to the right by the rock formation.  Maybe some smaller UFOs in the distance or something.  I'm totally nitpicking...

You could just get your artist to scale the Robot up more, since he’s vertical he can fill up that empty space a bit. That’s be the easiest tweak rather than duplicating and adjusting new elements to the image.

OK - not a lot of progress these days now that the kids are back in school and there are a million things to do... anyway, I managed to find a couple of hours to install the marquee today.  Came out awesome.  It looks really really good in person - camera doesn't do it justice at all.  There is a very warm glow as you can hopefully see in the second pic below.

I had to cut everything down to the proper size - I ordered it large on purpose because I wanted a snug fit on the final install.  This meant creating a template out of MDF, using double sided tape and attaching the plexiglass and then using a pattern bit and my router to make 2 exact copies of the plexiglass the exact size of the marquee.  Once that was finished I trimmed the marquee to fit and sandwiched it between the plexiglass for the install.

Next, I got out the aluminum brackets I sprayed black and used some tape to hold everything in place while I drilled the holes.  Then I added the screws (black #4 - 1/2" - very tiny), removewd the tape and plugged in the lights to test everything.  It worked!  Here are a few pics I snapped.

Next up is the control panel.  I'm a little nervous - I've decided to apply the art, punch the center holes and just drill everything out with the forstner bit.  I really want this to be accurate.  If there is some tearing hopefully the bezel around the buttons will hide it.   The bit is brand new so fingers crossed...

Thanks.  I'm quite pleased with how it came out but I am ready to wrap this project up and move on to the next one.

This week I hope to finish the control panel - I've decided to use blue painter's tape over the buttons for when I drill through the artwork to hopefully reduce tearing.  I also need to figure out how to get the CP to attach to the cabinet body, which is kind of a big deal.  Not sure how to handle it yet...  because of the tight fit I need to install all of the buttons before figuring out a hinge or whatever.  Not sure how much room I'll have but I'll figure something out...

Glue some battens to the right and the left insides of the cab and velcro the CP to them. I used this for my Pinup cab, that CP is going nowhere.

Thanks.  It looks even better in person.  Gameongrafix really delivers!

I have battens in place already but the thickness of the velcro will throw things off.  Right now the CP is a perfect fit as is.  Maybe I can add another batten to the inside but recessed the thickness of the velcro?  Not sure there is room for that though.

If you have a router, you can shave off the height of the velcro at the underside of the CP at both sides, so that it sits flush.

Or even a chisel - figure the batons are pretty soft wood so shouldn't take much to chisel out a few spots deep enough to add the velcro and keep the same height !

Alright... a little progress but not by me.  Arroyo has hooked me up and fixed the white border that I just can't seem to live without.   ;D

Here is the before and after shot so you guys can see the difference - really nice job.  He even fixed other problem areas (not just the marquee where it was obviously off).  All of the curves follow the edge of the cab a lot nicer.  Huge thanks to Arroyo - this is going to look sweet!

... assuming I can actually place the art properly when the time comes!  Thinking about it is making my brain hurt.  ;D

Next step is finishing off the control panel - problem is finding the time to actually do it.  I'm hopeful this Saturday will be productive.  Wife and kid going to NYC for a show.  Other 2 kids with me and we have flag football in the morning, then soccer and then baseball but otherwise the day will be open.. wait... that doesn't sound open...
