If you rebuild and rewire a lot of harnesses, and I suspect you do, then go for it.

Personally I believe in having the correct tools for the job and also quality tools.
They are after all my bread and butter (bearing in mind my job)

However I think the question you have to ask is do I need it?
If the answer is yes buy it.
If the answer is no then dont lol

I would have a really hard time believing  anyone would ever really need one, especially since you need to put the tie on manually first anyway before you cinch and cut it, However most factory workers most likely had one, so to duplicate the precise flush cut....That's 3 for yes :P

Well I use hundreds of ties and work in a factory yet have never used or felt the need for one lol

For harnesses etc ide prefer spiraband or race way tbh lol

If you really want to go crazy, why not get the auto-feeding kind shown at 0:50 in this video.   >:D

The $8 Harbor Freight zip-tie gun leaves a sharp 1/8" tab so that piece-of-crap is a poor choice.

Between HF and Panduit, there are some mid-range options like this $43 gun.   ;D

It has lots of good reviews.
Quote
I was really pleased with the quality of this gun. With the ties I have been using, it has been cutting them nearly flush and without a sharp edge.

The gun has a nice solid feel to it. Nothing seems flimsy and nothing is rattling.

I used to have an much more expensive Panduit gun and I feel like this is performing on the same level.

I would start a list of tools that aren't worth buying new and search it once a week to see if a used one pops up for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

One obvious question (I have no clue on your background or what you do) but would you actually use it enough to justify spending $200 on this? Like, do you sit there and rewire harnesses for a few hours every day? Or do you do it for 20 minutes once a month?

I have owned many different types of tools over many years, and one thing about tools is that there is no replacement for the RIGHT tool for the job. But in the case of something like a zip tie gun, because it's easy to manually do a few zip ties every now and then, it only makes sense to buy an expensive gun for it if your number of zip ties you are doing is greater than X per month.

If that tool doesn't trim as flush as you like, you can use either flush wire cutters or small end nippers to remove the remaining sharp tail.

Jenn I think you have probably made the right choice.

I know what you mean about the want to not cut yaself up on the ties, My arms are covered in cuts and scars from this exact thing! Infact I skinned a large section on the back of my thumb just last night :(

Anywho I digress, You cant change what others do but for your own wiring options you have options!

So personally for wireing harnesses I personally like spira band.
Its cheap as chips to buy and looks really nice, Downside is that its slow to install and a pain in the butt to pull cables in or out/trace cables.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Metre-Cable-Tidy-Kit-PC-TV-Wire-Organising-Wrap-Tool-Spiral-Office-Home/122714804493?epid=2254727580&hash=item1c925f510d:m:mPA1JUiSiAvfbKG_BJETqAw

You can also use split conduits like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-spiral-conduit-tube-pipe-split-non-split-cable-wire-tidy-6-5mm-23mm/282317172757?hash=item41bb6a3015:m:mQNjqJIyqE0XfQi4LS0VWXg

The other option if you have the room is race way trunking like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stageek-Cable-Management-Kit-Open-Slot-On-WallWiring-Raceway-Duct-with-Cover-TVs/132633436293?epid=22019777266&hash=item1ee191a085:g:zxsAAOSwHPNbBUol

Lots of options for neat and tidy pain free cable management :)

Cable ties are for amateurs ;) LOL

I LOVE buying tools - but $200 for an item like that may be a bit much.  I personally consider harbor Freight only for single use tools.  Everything after that is a bonus..
Now  If they made a $50 version as suggested.. I'd put that on my list  :P

Jennifer the route I always go is lowest price with the highest rating.  I have been bit in the ass too many times buying the most expensive version thinking that it will be best and it turns out to be garbage.  To me $200 seems too high for what the tool actually does.  If its not gold plated I would try to find something in a lower price range.

To me something seems suspicious also when a quick amazon search brings up only one gun that is in that price range and all the others are posted for half the price and below...

+1 for buying but not at that price.

Jumping on the band wagon a little late here but, if I had to use the thing everyday or it would greatly help me on my output then yes, I would buy it.
But if I only needed it for my hobby, and it would sit in my toolbox for months at a time, nah.
You can also try using finger nail clippers to cut the tie. They do a pretty decent job, just cant get into some places.

Don't go confusing capitalism with consumerism. And you will NEVER make $200 back from a zip tie cutter. EVER.

One could look at it like this.... You buy 10k in tools (and a zip tie gun) And do something that pays back the tools, that zip tie gun gets paid back by say a set of craftsman sockets, and a air ratchet...

No. There is a reason why mechanics are poor. And tool debt is a LARGE portion of it. And that's a mechanic, grinding 8+ hours a day with his tools getting multiple cars out of the shop. $200 for "zip tie tensioners" is some of the dumbest ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I've heard, and I own many Snap-On tools, so there ya go...

So we are back to practical or not, this guy makes a good case for yes, should anyone be interested.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA8c9TP0ax8....But Jenn only cares for others around here that think it would be fun to play with one at any cost, (but most likely lower end yet practical as far as usefulness)....If any of you guys got a different (not so popular) tool on your workbench Jennifer would love to see it please. :P

Alas I cant show you my not so popular but functional tool or I would get banned LOL

But again I take you back to wrap ;)

All right Don't need a piano to fall on my head,... 3 yes, 2 no...*Edit, If  D/O/Man is saying no too, that's 3/3

I watched the video you linked to, and I have to say this is what we used at my job (Electrician in an aluminum rolling mill).
(I say used because I retired from that job April 1 of this year.)

These things are very nice. The company bought all the tools, so I had no idea what they cost, I figured under a hundred but IDK, never priced them.
If you can afford this tool, I guess my answer would be yes.
If you really dont have a large tool budget, and this thing wont be used very often, id say No.

Now, my solid answer?
(Flipping coin).
Since you seem intent on getting this, and it seems you would use it more than I would (in my personal work), I have to give you a yes.

Go out young Jenn, spend like no tomorrow and ride with the wind! :)
(You only live once and you really cant take it with you anyway.)

I retired from that job April 1 of this year.

Congrats!

Thanks Nephasth!
I worked there 30.5 years. It was a good job, paid good, but swing shift sucks. Not much time for playing or outside projects, and kids grow up before you know it.
But I am fortunate to be able to retire at 60 yrs old. But my plan in my young years was to retire at 50. When I hit 50 it became 55, when I hit 60, I figured Id better finish the job or get off the pot.
So far retirement has been good. I really like not HAVING to get up early, although I still do a lot of mornings.
I would like to do some traveling, so I may do that later this summer. (Zapcon is on my travel list next year.)

Sorry to hijack your thread Jennifer.

Back to the ty-wrap thinngy.. Now what were they used for?

Zapcon is well worth the trip. They have a great arcade restoration community out there.

My threads need a good Hijack from time to time, Congrats on that retierment ;D.... I already bought 2 of them a few days ago, got a sweet deal on to of them, (haven't got them yet) so this thread isn't really about Jenn anymore, more about the others who may want/need one too, (Although secretly I would wish yots to review that one of his as a benchmark)....T/gamer, P/m me with that "Not so popular tool" :o (giggle) I like those wraps, and for those Mame guys that would be the answer, However for me personally, Jenn is more into restorations, and that wasn't used much, arcade machines were put together really fast with state of the art tooling for the day, even today its hard to reverse engineer them. Its more like "How was that done".....MikeA, the whole world is a restoration community. so go get yourself a welder and get to work >:D

I wonder if they used tie guns back then?
Ime guessing not by the amount of cuts ive gotten.

Infact if you want to keep it real ide suggest cutting them with a rusty serrated pair of cutters lol

Rusty scissors" that's funny (Jenn cackles)....Although I haven't looked into it, My guess the history of the zip tie originated during the war, for the aerospace ind. and judging from past projects didn't become popular until the early 60s (possibly late 50s), that and linoleum. :timebomb:

No, it all came from the saucer wreckage they found at Roswell. Velcro too.

I went out to the shop to look at the 'expensive' and under-utilized tools...
I have plenty - but I large portion of them are because of 'collecting'.  Woodworking planes to be specific..
I may be the only guy with enough clamps..  I have some in packaging I've never used.

Amazon shows the Eastwood ziptie gun ~$50  - it looked to be the best price/performance..  Although the $200 model was very much loved.

Yankee screwdriver.. Now that is a tool nut!  I could never bring myself to get one of them.

I did break out my seldom used Router Plane (not my image)

to help clean up the recess for my trackball mounting plate.  I had to make it about 2 paper thicknesses deeper..

I often wonder who put more holes in themselves:

Me with a drill driver or My grandfather with a Yankee.

I suspect probably my grandad!

I have a 2ft version of the yankee push,  not that new school stuff either, but an old school wooden handle version,  Really must find where that has gone to,  I used to use it quite a lot for ikea furniture,  pop a straight allen key in there tighten up the holder like a power drill does and away you go.   Also have an old hand drill which has seen plenty of use. Sometimes a power drill is just too much power.

I serious think that marble was a gift to the Egyptians from ancient alien astronauts.

Mike’s a very generous guy and would probably be more than happy to let you share a room with him. And don’t worry, the authorities let him leave the state, so I don’t think the charges stuck.

my 2 cents, when I was installing car audio professionally in the 90's, I used a LOT of zip ties.  Thousand packs only lasted a week or two.  One day the snap-on truck (or maybe Mac or Matco) showed up with this zip tie gun.  I got excited, right up until I found you still have to manually start the zip tie, and then it was just an expensive tool that could be replaced with a side cutter I already had.

I still have scars from zip tie cuts from back then, and fresher scars from zip ties in network racks.  I have at least 6 fairly fresh ones on my arms right now, it's just a fact of life when you work around wires.

Funny thing is, I can take the time to get all wires organized with velcro straps in a rack, but sooner or later a zip tie ends up in there for some reason, and if it is there, I will cut myself on it, pretty much guaranteed.

Reminds me of two things:
- Deathstar plans
- The off the air signal on TV when I was a kid..  Did they just transmit a calibration signal?  Thats my guess

Zip tie chainsaw massacre?, Oh yes Jenn bought 2 of them and actually tried a third one, They are awesome and will do a real review when I can,.. Heres a fun pic for you guys, More rarely used tools, Those that know what your looking at I am impressed ;), For the rest of us, its a vectorscope (I had 5 of these, blew one up, parted one out, and still have 3) It was used to match standardized color signals at tv studios and movies, before it got transmitted. Jenn matches the squares up to calibrate  RGB on  arcade monitors after work as to use a baseline for reds, greens and blues, People that say they can do it by feel lie....I do NOT recommend this unless you are really retentive about color, there is NO information available as to its use (that Jenn can find) and required lots of experimentation.

Game of Tempest anyone?? Lol

A zip tie gun is only for expedience if you have to zip tie a million times a day.

Cancel the order and save yourself some money.

I can't see blowing 25 bucks on a tool that will see very limited use. Unless that tool is necessary to accomplish the task at hand. A T molding slot cutter for example.

I have to admit that I have 2 zip tie guns... (I didn't buy either of them)
In my past I used to build radio station studios and do network wiring. The guns definitely were useful as getting the tension right was important.  Especially useful when doing wiring under desks and in other tight places. Nowadays they make wiring inside cabinets easier.

The red one is a no-name, unlabeled unit and the gray one is a Panduit GS2B.  Both work nicely but the Panduit feels better, works smoother and is my go-to gun if I am using a lot of ties. I would not buy the Panduit new but with eBay prices for used ones as low as $25 it's not a steep investment especially if you like tools.  These can make wiring go faster once you develop a system and I like that they retain the end of the tie and it doesn't go flying when cut.  Definitely useful but certainly not a necessity.

I've had the Panduit gun for about 30 years. Haven't had to replace a blade. Never thought about selling either one but I have hoarding issues. eBay cheapies are $12 shipped from China. Someone should review one.  For those who have to have the best you can go for one of the pneumatic ones for about $1000

The "tensioning" of zip ties seems ridiculous to me. Zip ties are stepped... It's tightened up to each step, no in between "tensioning"...

On a side note... Anybody want to buy some wire tie twisters for your bread loafs?

I think what your missing is a wire is rarely strait, its got the shape of the spool it came off, well put multiple together and suddenly your pulling on a mess at least until the tie realizes where it is supposed to be.

Get the fuq outta here...

Sure it looks good, but are all of those ties correctly tensioned? If even one of those is incorrectly tensioned you could be in for catastrophic failure in 1 to 2 thousand years.

Think of a cable tie as a belt with holes it's stepped but can be over tightened so your guts are all squished up and uncomfortable.

Tension is not a huge deal on arcade stuff but if you ever had to track down a fault on premise wiring because some ape decided to crank down on a wire tie and destroyed a wire you begin to appreciate proper bundling of cables.  Connectivity and speed issues on networks, frequency response problems on audio stuff, doesn't happen often, but when it does, it sucks.   I guess it's a big enough issue that velcro ties are now the recommended thing to use in many industries.

Bottom line - you don't need a zip tie gun. But some of us like toys (all of us like games) and tools. I think people might laugh as us debating a $12 tool when they see all the other stuff we drop big bucks on.  I just bought one of these to try - an open source CNC router! Do I need it? Hell no, but it's cool.

I'll post a review on it when I get it up and running.

I didn't do it, I didn't even see it happen. I heard about it and saw paintball dots all over the intersection (road and signage). So the story checked out for me based on the fact I haven't seen that bum since. Guy may have just shaved and cut off his white people dreads and is begging elsewhere, who knows.

That being said, I'd pop a pan handler with a paintball gun. I don't deny that.

My $25 zip tie gun review..

It took me 3 zip ties to get the hang of it..

The tail of the tie gets slid sideways a tiny bit by the way the slot is designed.  But I think you have to keep you finger there anyway to hold it in place.
Once you do that - it creates a nice clean flush cut.

I'm going to ziptie the crap out of my cabinet once I'm 100% done.. maybe..  :)

**UPDATE** The zipper gun is fun!, I find Jenn gets a bit carried away and uses too many ties however, and has to hold back as to not be wasteful/ impractical (recommended for tool nerds)..... But today its crimpers I am thinking, I have had many over the years and some are expensive, some are cheap, and most just suck in terms of quality, My new crimping  test victim http://www.engineer.jp/en/products/pa09e.html   again affordable to all, but it pros/cons according to reviews being it only does 1 crimp at a time, which makes me think it potentially stresses the pin bending it twice, and it doesn't ratchet, or made in the US obviously, My attraction being it is considerably thinner in design than the removable quick change jaw types (Not a fan) and could be considered more user friendly in manipulating a crimp pin. .... Anyway its in the mail and we will check this out.

I have those for small pins. Love it. I used it to make around 100 some harnesses for 7" LCDs for KLOV members back in the day. Haven't used it since though.

These are my go-to crimpers: https://www.amazon.com/Tool-Aid-18930-Ratcheting-Weatherpack/dp/B000K1CFXO
I have different die sets to suit my crimping needs.

Not sure you will like the stamped metal crimper - the little pins are difficult to crimp once - never mind twice.

I used this one for my well over 100 pins for Dupont connectors.

It has a small side and fat side to accommodate the pin and the insulator on the wire.
Overall its pretty good - I've seem many that are nearly identical to this.

Here are the crimps:

There is a very slight difference between the two.
The red one I crimped once.
The green one I crimped as usual - then I opened the crimper - pushed the wire in another 1/16" and gave it a 1/2 crimp to compress the insulator better.

What was happening is that the connector would go most of the way in and get stuck at the bulge where the pin grips the wire..
The extra little crimp compressed the insulator and bulge enough to make it go into the Dupont connector easily..
I figured this out after fighting to get wires in for a 30-40 wires.

If I were designing my own - I'd make the wire insulator side of the jaw twice as wide so I could do this in one crimp..
Maybe I should patent that  ;)

My dies have held up just fine. No signs of excessive wear after many thousands of crimps. I use die HT-236-2C4-DIE for smaller-than-normal sized molex terminal pins, such as the ones used in the Micro-fit family of connectors. I'm impressed with both the die set that came with my crimpers as well as the extra die set I ordered for Micro-fit connectors.

Edit: Looks like that die set is up to $12. I paid $7 for it, but that was 7 or 8 years ago.
