Getting OpenBOR emulator to run games on Raspberry Pi 3
« on: May 18, 2018, 07:04:17 pm »
Newbie here. Hello all.  :burgerking:
I am hoping someone has experience with Raspberry Pi 3 and can help.
I cannot get the OpenBOR emulator to run games on Raspberry Pi 3. The issue is I really want some OpenBOR titles (which are primarily fan-made) but the person I am working with is not familiar how to get the older games I want to run on his Raspberry Pi 3. Has anyone successfully done this?
I particularly want all of the Golden Axe games on page 2 of the link below on there.
 http://www.gamesdatabase.org/list.aspx?system=openbor

Because OpenBOR games are still being made and updated, the Raspberry Pi 3 does not appear to support them. The OpenBOR emulator available for RP3 is based on an older version. I can’t even get older games to work on it. There may be some way, but it’s over my head at this time. There may be a future update to the Pi that will make OpenBOR games more feasible, but at this moment, I can’t get them to work.

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

have you tried compiling it on the RPI?

Thanks so much for your response.

How do I go about doing that?

Openbor is not an emulator but a game engine. Those games are all fan games. Openbor is not cross platform (win only) so the chances you will run it on other than win SO are (almost) zero.
In addition, openbor is not very "backward compatible", so every mod (every game) runs well only on the engine build it was developed on.

Hmm thanks...that makes things tough.  Yes I want the fan made games...I have seen some pandora's boxes etc. with front ends for OpenBOR.

Maybe those wont work for some games.

I looked into this.
While the open pandora code should compile on RPI it looks like the make file needs some tweaking because it is looking in the wrong spot for gcc and probably a few other dependencies.

My win 10 PC decided to BSOD itself into corrupting the boot manager over the weekend post latest update so i'll be working on that in my spare time but I would ask this question on the retropie forums.
There may be a technical reason why they are using the version they are using.

openbor is cross platform.
If you go on the github page:

These platforms are actively supported and may be compiled with the latest OpenBOR engine.

Android
Windows
Linux
Mac OS X
Wii
PSP

This is a good news (I was an openbor modder ages ago and looks like I lost some valuable info from the past two years). Anyway, you need the specific build to run correctly each mod, so it could be impossible to run on sistems other than win mods older than a couple of years.
