  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
At last i started my first full size arcade project. After making the bartop i started to gather lots of stuff for this and now i had time to start it.

About the cabinet - i thought and planned a long time which model to build, but in the end i got back to where i started, a 2 player cabin.

I was thinking a japanese style very high and deep cabinet, and also more old-school ones with 4 players.

So, i threw all my previous plans and made simple drawings for this project.

The sides are made from one sheet, 2400x1200, so its about 60cm deep. Height it 195cm.

Im going to use a pc with hyperspin and rocketlauncher and also want to make it as jukebox with spotify-lists.

Materials to start with:

-Im using Plywood 18mm for sides, and 14mm for other parts. 2 sheets 2400x1200mm each
-Plywood 18mm for the CP
-wood bars (made myself with cirkular saw)
-Wheels with brakes - 4
-joystick and button sets - 2
-extra buttons - so many i need
-6.5" speakers - 1 pair
-amplifier - 1
-coin doors - 2 (im still thinking if i use them, have them though allready, also have  "credit" buttons for this)
-Fans - 2 + 2
-Led strip - 5m
-Carbon / vinyls - still thinking about these, have ordered carbon for control panel ( i liked the look on my bartop)
-T-molding 19mm, black - (12m)
-24" monitor (still thinking if it should be bigger but for 2 player this is fine) - 1
-power supply for mame arcade machines - 1
-different connectors for power and electrics - so many as needed
-a doorlock on front - 1
-hinges for doors - 4
-cupholders - 2 (VERY IMPORTANT :))
Edit/add/changes:
-24”lcd -> 32” tv
-track ball with colour
-polycarbon sheet for marque
-track ball panel
-spray 7 cans to inside paint
-1l alkydpaint to outside
-joystick lenghteners 1.5cm x 2
-grills for fan holes and passive vents x 3

Computer im using:
Quadcore 2.8ghz, 4gb,8800GTS 2gb
Windows10 Pro

Software: Hyperspin, Rocketlauncher, and jukebox.

I can add to the list more along the way, cant remember all things now i have and will need.

I dont have expert tools, so this is good project to follow if you have a garage/space and handtools like im using in my garage. It takes a little more time but will get the job done :). I want to use screws to make the cab stable, so you wont be seeing any spike guns on my pics.

Here are some pics ive done sofar. Ill add more along the way:

I need advice. I have a older Samsung 37” hdready tv lying around.
I measured the sides and it should fit ok. My first thought was using a 24” monitor but the cabin would be quite narrow so im thinking if I make it wider with the tv?

-can there be resolution problems with this?
-im going to use a pc on this - any issues?

Im not sure about the resolution (going to check) but it should work with Hyperspin?

Edit: its only 1366x768. https://us.hardware.info/product/21893/lg-37lc51/specifications

Stick with the 24".  When you are standing that close to the cabinet, you really don't need anything bigger and your cab will get too wide.  You are going with the 2 player, not the 4 right?

The PC with Hyperspin will work great.

Yes, 2-player.

I measured and its going to be only 57cm wide if i use monitor width. I think your right, because with mame resolutions it will be too close for playing.

Im going to also try to make it to be a jukebox that can be opened from hyperspin and rocketlauncher. Any advice/experience on that?I googled some software that should work.

Im running Hyperspin and Rocketlauncher on a i5 laptop and that i should get running ok.
Is C2D or P4 3Ghz+ , 2-4 gigs ram ok with a basic graphics card? Or should i use better hw?

I tried to mount the 37” old tv just to see and it was too wide. Today i got a fresh very nice 32” tv that is going to be the one for the project.

Heres a pic of my testmount today with the 37”:

I installed fresh win7 and downloaded latest hyperspin, rocketlauncher, emulators and other software needed.

I think this stable pc will run software needed, comments?

It could do with 4gb memory, (And possibly a dedicated video card) but other then that it should be good to play 95% or more of all playable games in mame :)

Thx for comment, i should have more memory for it, MB has 4 memory slots  :applaud:. Also looking for a older pci-e max 1gb video card for it.

I test mounted the 32" screen today and it fitted well. So now i can advance more when the display is selected .

Some progress done. Backside is covered and wheels with brakes added to the bottom. The marquee frame also done and t-moulding-ready all the way. Slowly progressing.  T-moulding arrived yesterday too  :applaud:

That turned out nice,.... If it was mine Jenn would double up the inside back bottom with another ply sheet, or (3 oak 2x4) so it could be bolted to the wall like a jukebox.

Thx, that plysheet can be easily added later on with 45 angle on top. It has wheels so atm i attend to make it mobile.

I just made a raw plan for the CP. Im thinking that it would run 10 cm over on both sides. Is that too much?
Trackball is still on its way, but i have all other stuff allready in stock. Im thinking that I will use some buttons with led and some without it. Not a big fan of led stuff anyway .

Trackball is ment only for the jukebox functionality. Im thing about making a KB and mouse drawer too but this way I woudnt need it, ofc seeking songs with name will not be that cool to do with onscreen keyboard as the screen isnt touchscreen...

I will ofc measure everything and this plan can change.

Any comments?

OMG!.... the handwritten plans are so AWESOME in this digital skecthup world, (Jenn used to do that), You find the math to make symmetrical becomes challenging to the point of insanity and arguing with the voices in your head, (mentally calculating the total volume of your dinner before you eat is good practice) However once your good at it you don't even need the paper plans anymore 8).... There are people around here better suited to the practical physical layout of a MAME c/p and sizing then me however so to make sure you get 100% advice I will just quietly just sit in the corner ;).

Lose about 10cm either side , tighten up a little in the middle (P1 and P2 Joysticks/buttons a bit closer to trackball)  (Lose cupholders if you have to or find another way to have them) That way there is no need for overhang. Me no fan of the overhang.  Largest standard dynamo cab had 30" wide control panel. You should end up a bit wider because of the screen but still be able to fit everything pretty comfortably.

Am I reading that right? 102cm? You made it mobile, how wide are the doors you want to roll it through? Any concern there?

If I were you, I'd make it my goal to setup your cabinet so you don't need any admin buttons. Lastly, what's the point of 8 buttons per player?

Hi, wheels turn so it can be rolled sideways.

The buttons are still under planning, i also have 2 coin doors. I think I will also add flipper buttons. :)

My concern is if i add too many setups without admin buttons its too hard for my kids to use it.

If that is the case, you have too many setups. Arcade machines were simple. That was part of the draw. You could walk up to one, drop in a quarter and start playing.
If you need a PhD in computer science to get to the game you want, nobody is going to bother with it.

I have two multi arcade machines in my arcade room. One runs MAME from a PC. It has a vertical monitor, 4 way joystick, 3 action buttons, P1 and P2 start, and a trackball. I have about a dozen games on the menu.

I have a candy cab with a horizontal monitor, 2 8 way joysticks, 12 action buttons, and P1 and P2 start. It has a Pandora's Box 3 that came with the cab. I pared the list down to about 50 games.

The machine with a dozen games gets far more play than the other.

Both of them get far less play than my dedicated machines. Except Defender. The casuals play Defender once, cry a little, and then play something else.

What admin buttons are your planning?  Exit is helpful IMO.  Coinup is nice unless you are going to have a coin door which is preferred.  You don't really need any others.

With the right encoder/frontend setup you can get away with no admin buttons really.  I run Hyperspin with an Ipac.  After playing -3 times my 4yo learned the most important ones (select emulator/game, pause game, volume controls, favorites menu) and my 10yo has figured out all of my shift keys...even RL pause so she can check the moves lists for fighting games.

The only admin button I have besides exit (mounted on the bottom of the CP) is a "left tab" button so i can access Mame setup for rapid fire...and I mounted that on top of the cab so my kids can't accidently screw up my settings.

Before I had no admins buttons and just used the default Ipac shift for exit (P1 start + P2 start).  But with kids constantly dying and button mashing they kept accidently backing  out of games so I added a dedicated  exit out of sight.

Very good discussion, I appreciate all opinions. I have 2 cheaper coin doors but im thinking if use them. Any experience on these (picture).

Then i could take advise how to mount the amp to the cp like i had it in the picture. I have to make a hole - yes, but the shape of the metal case cant be like that from the bottom(wings). Do i need to cut some metal from the bottom of the case to only show the face of the amp? I dont know if i can lose the case either and i think it would be quite neat to have it visible.

Added also the final button setting I chose. I narrowed the CP to be 92.5 cm (only 5cm over sides).

Added also picture with some other stuff, the speakers will be mounted from front as they look very cool in my opinion :).

Those mechs look like commercial washing machine stuff, cant see why they wouldn't work.... The amp gets a little trickier, First they get hot, sometimes really hot, (your cab is a bit limited by the physical size to do what your saying) and cutting around on that case will make it look like monkey butt since that's probably anodized aluminum ....However, that marquee hole could be utilized by mounting 2 big heatsinks on either side of it all mounted on a 1/4" polished plate aluminum and ventilated with 2 fans on back of cab (possibly hooked up to heat sensors if you are clever) some leds, and colored plexy with sandblast etch art and your in!

Pop the amp open, if all the connections are simple switches and pots then you should be able to get a piece of aluminium milled to the right size to have all the switches etc on and then wires run back to the connections on the actual amp.

Question about powering the cab:

Should i/ Can i use only computers powersupply or use paraller the arcade power supply and computer supply? Do you have any plans about your full arcade cabins power circuits ?

The about painting the cab:

im thinking using black furniture paint for the cab and use roll for the painjob as its "real wood". Im not thinking about putting vinyls to sides at this time, maybe later. Carbon vinyl is going to be on CP and speaker shelf.

Current project phase:
I have still work to be done with speaker shelf, power switch hole, door to the front, some adjusting for the drawer etc + CP button holes and hinges from CP towards the cab, and a lot of sanding before painting it, but its not that far away, so i could get the paints allready from store.

Thx again for comments :)

I hope you checked the clearances from the bottom of the joysticks to where the keyboard sits.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

You have some good skills with the wood.  Maybe I missed it, but is this cab "extra wide"?  It looks like a widescreen monitor could fit in there - if that is the case, why?  Are you going to cover the sides with a bezel so only 4:3 ratio shows?  I know most 4:3 LCDs only go up to 19" so to go bigger you have to go wide...  Just curious because I don't know any arcade games that are 16:9.

I never used mouse buttons on my trackball cabinets. I hadn't had a need for them.

Ok, i was thinking that if i use it as a spotify Jukebox is it easier to have some buttons near the trackball....? I have to use it to select a song (thats why i have kb too). Im just thinking that should i not install the trackball as i now have kb and mouse possibility inside the drawer...?

What about that paint, is it ok to use Alkydpaint for this? No replies on that.

Don't use your arcade machine as a jukebox. It adds unnecessary complication. Just use a cheap tablet for your music. Use the headphone out to a stereo system or bluetooth if it is a newer system.

+1.  With cheap Bluetooth speakers and a phone or tablet you should be all set in the music department.

Thats true.. i just got interested on a jukebox software that can be installed to use with Hyperspin. The cabinet will be staying in my garage so it would be cool to play music thru it also...

I just made the powering ready.

Edit: all ok 👍

I only use the white box to ensure future possibilities for 220V and for cleaner wiring🙂.

Some progress again. I divided the door board in three parts to make door itself a bit lower by adding on top and under the door the 2 other pieces.

Fitted the hinges to the door and mounted everything to cabin, also door lock is now in right place and working.
->Hinges were so deep that i needed to use sanding roll to slowly make the depth. Only 3mm wood left now on those. The door board is obly 14mm. (Sides are 18mm)

Soon i can start the sanding. The speaker shelf needs some work before that.

Jumped from woodwork to computers for a while.

I got a bit better computer for the project, its almost a bit overrated with quadcore and 8800GTS 2gb. Im making it ready when its on a Chieftek case but almost sure im going to strip the case and mount the parts directly inside the cabinet.

Hyperspin and Rocketlauncher are now running on it, also did allready some optimizing for Windows10 Pro it has as OS.

Its going to run MAME, snes, nes, nN64,metadrive,GB,GC, Different Ataris, ps1,ps2 to start with but main use will be MAME.
Havent tried the Jukebox software yet.

Im also waiting for the trackball to arrive to get CP ready.

Leave it in the case. There is no reason to decase it unless it is a small build and there is no room for the case.

Mike: how about heat - isnt it better for the computer to get more air if parts are on open air inside the cabin?

Ofc i can open the side of the computer too. Then theres ofc the question how to mount the case inside so it stays in place when moving the cabinet around.

Is there any guru here for Hyperspin ? I have few questions (posted these Hyperspin forum too):

1. How can i add new emulators for this compilation out from the original Hyperspin (global) list . Now i have Mame, SNES, Nes etc but if i want to for example add Turbo Engine 16 (added allready emulator for it) - how can i get it to global and choose the emu + romdir for it? This is crusial information, can ofc try to google more but i bet some guru here has a fast working answer.

2.Themes: I just installed the original theme, is it easy to change it without breaking everything else...

3. Trackball - im waiting for trackball to arrive. Im going to attach it to PS2 port right? Can i then from HyperHQ adjust it?

4. Windows10 modification. Any real working experience on this. I have removed the GUI loader but its still showing the Win10 logo on startup. I also want it to log in to HyperSpin automatically, but still i need to get out from there sometimes to windows use - is this possible?

 :D

The PC case is designed to remove heat. It is better to leave it in the case.

Decased or cased.... both work fine. I have never had a heat issue. Never.

Im not that afraid of heating either (never had problems with heat earlier in life when played A LOT FPS games).

My concern is basically mobility for the cab (stays in place if i need to move the cab) and depth. Cabin is under 60cm deep so this pc case wont fit there if i dont put it vertically to the bottom.

Ofc it would save some time and work and i would only have to worry about the 32" LCD heat. Should i leave those holes on the top as passive vents and put one 10cm fan on the bottom hole that brings in air to the cab? Heat goes always up anyways :D?

About coin doors- isnt 1 enough for 2 player game as the same one credit amount is used by both players?

This would mean that one credit button is enough too.

DEpends on the game -- SOme use the 2nd coin input as a different slot since it also selects which player gets the credit and selects that character. ( ie. putting a coin in 2nd player coin slot selects player 2 - while 2 coins in player 1 coin slot just adds a 2nd credit to player 1.)

Thx JDFan!

I thought this over and I think im going to do a compromise here: Im going to add 2 credit buttons under the kb/mouse drawer and maybe add the coin doors later as i have them allready. Also im going to add that computer in the case to the cabin and think a bit about that vent /fan hole that it is going to cover. This way im quite close to sanding phase, just few holes away.

BTW: I had a blast yesterday when i briefly tried like 50 different MAME games on that computer im going to use to cabinet - It brought up many memories from childhood!   :lol

Next step is serious sanding 🙂

The case fits vertically quite ok, if im not going to decase it.

Got trackball holder today and also the polycarbonate for the margue.

I just almost completed the CP, i really like the carbon vinyl material, some living shape from the wood panel but NO bubbles 😎. T-molding also installed.

I still wait for the joystick stick lenghteners ive ordered, theyll add 1,5cm more lenght as the CP is thick, 18mm. (last image)

Then hinges to CP etc.

Speakershelf done. Mounted the amp too as i wanted it to be visible. Now its also close to speakers. For mounting plate under the amp frontplate i used a dvd disc. The idea for this just came to me and heck - it worked out quite good and works with my jukebox idea. Cut the hole for the disc with dremel and painted black so it has some special art too 🙂.

I was wondering the same thing.  Wouldn't that be hidden by the bezel?

The TV has a transparent 1.5cm strip around it and lights show thru from that strip. Like i wrote before im still thinking about that bezel as i have to think about confs and also all the use for cabin.

I just had those lights available so had to try :).

Thx. I just mounted the speaker shelf, im quite satisfied with it.

Next step is to attach controls to buttons and test them, and attach CP. Just tried the display with kb and mouse.

Im using Win10, so have to see how to get it to work best way. Its certainly not the best alternative to use on cabs.

Aesthetics aside, I just think that at some point something sticky is going to get spilled all over the CP because drinks are obviously encouraged to be nearby.  This thing came out really nice though.

Im still waiting for Marque art to arrive so making some small staff meanwhile. Today i finshed all the buttons wiring, also power button works now.

Im facing some problems with Hyperspin, the wheel just keeps turning when I try to touch joysticks, havent figured out what causes it.  :banghead:
I tested and started games directly from RocketlauncherUI and fixed setting from mame itself and joysticks seem to work fine there and i can play all mame games that way. Any ideas? Im using latest Hyperspin (from 2-3weeks back).

Also: where can I adjust other emulators controls? Hyperspin doesnt work att all like Retroarch / retropie I use on my bartop. ???

Looks great - what games take up the entire screen?  Just curious...

None of those do 16:9 (maybe the spotify thing).  I'm just wondering why the wide screen and not a 4:3 monitor unless there are specific games you plan on playing.  For example, Street Fighter IV and V are widescreen so maybe those?

Hyperspin is just a front end that links to your emulators.  To adjust the controls you would need to go into said emulators GUI or config file.

True, i have also N64 and PS2 emus installed which will be the highest emus and will only have few games unlike Mame and Megadrive with lots more.

Bigger 4:3 monitors are hard to find, I have on stock 2 x 19" 4:3 but those are way too little screens for this size cabin. Ofc the 32" lcd gave me the measures for the build, could have gone with more narrow build with 19".

1. Yes, I know this. My biggest problem is that i want to use Hyperspin Frontend with the controllers, not with KB and Mouse... - which is not possible as they dont work atm., the wheel keeps on turning and i have to kill the process and use only KB when i launch it again, doesnt work always then either.... If i disable the joysticks from HyperHQ i can use KB normally to choose right emulator and game from HyperSpin.

2. Other question is where i can adjust controls for Megadrive, SNES, N64 etc. Do i do it inside the emulators directly which Hyperspin then uses when i launch the game.

in my hyperspin setup i've disabled the joysticks altogether, in hyperhq - main settings - startup/exit, my startup program is - G:\HyperSpin\JoyToKey_en\JoyToKey.exe

joytokey emulates keyboard via joystick/buttons, very easy to setup, i used the exact same keys from hyperspin in joytokey, hope that makes sense.

so everytime hyperspin starts it also starts joytokey.

 :D
Have you figured this out yet? you can search on youtube for Simply Austin and/or gigapig, they have nice tutorials on how to install most of the systems. They are similar though, but it may change mostly when you choose the emulator for each system. I think it is better for you to follow those videos and then I could answer something on specific.

For the themes, yes they are easy to change, you need to go to the folder location Hyperspin/Media/Main Menu/Themes and Hyperspin/Media/Main Menu/Videos to change the files. I highly recommend you look up for Retrohumanoid and Ghostlost on youtube to get their media. It really look so amazing all the media they have created.

If you have windows 10 latest build (1803), you would need to update to the latest hyperspin version (1.5.xx). If you want to run it properly.

I am planning out my arcade and coincidentally, it looks similar to yours, but I pretty much started with the software, so I am good with that. Just figuring out the woodwork and getting all accessories for now.

BTW Love your build, I am getting inspire by it to follow mine.

Thanks also for you comment on my build. I didnt find any ready plans that would work for me, so planned the build along the way (without really making plans to save on paper ofc :)) so this became a DIY without made plans and with no saved plans. Most critical phases are 1.selecting materials so you know right tools you need, 2.selecting screen. Screen has to fit like a glove, and if you dont use a bezel it Really has to fit in nice way  :). Good luck on you build  :applaud:!

Since i posted by mistake prior, figured i've give you some help :)

Tips on hiding windows 10

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,153529.0.html

The windows boot logo is pretty stubborn you may just have to live with that, as making it disappear only works with certain versions of win 10.

Use this for easy access to all of the windows 10 functions

Make sure your system account has administrative privileges.
Right-click on the Windows 10 desktop and choose New > Folder.
Name the folder: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} and hit enter/return.

There are a few ways to shell to hyperspin.

The easiest is open your registry go here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell

change explorer.exe to your hyperspin.exe

When you exit hyperspin you will come to a black screen, just hit crtl-alt-delete then run task then type in explorer and you will be back at the desktop.

Now if you have other programs like joy2key that open with windows, they may not run due to shelling to the front so you may need to look at some AHK scripting and shell to that script.

Within the script you can load joy2key first then load hyperspin.   Test it with and without the script and see how it behaves.

If your experiencing the spinning there is a conflict between the jstick comands and the keyboard commands.  if your using and IPac you only need joytokey if you want to play pc based games that don't play well with keyboard strokes.

disable the sticks, map your ipac or encoder to the same commands as hyperspin, spinning should stop as long as there isn't any embedded scripting calling joy2key to run.

remapping of your emulators is done within each emulator, your have to run the emulator either through rocket launcher or just go to the exe for the emulator.  Then run it, and go to controller setup and automap the controls as normal.

Hope this helps.

My pleasure helping on what I can.
Regarding HS, since a couple of months ago, I have been changing like 90% of my themes so far, with the media these guys have created (that fits on wide screens). I just imagine how nice it will look on the cabinet.

I have a concept model that I found on youtube (perfect for wide screens) and I guess, I will define details as it goes, when I am building it.
I got a LED tv (just like yours), the buttons, sticks, speakers ,etc. and Just figuring out your number 1 critical phase, the woodwork now lol.

thanks  for your wishes on my project.
Best of luck and congratulations on your build. ;)

Thx, doing last things on cab still.

I tried to figure out best way to attach CP. I ended up after trying several hinges to choose another way.

I screwed mounting angles of metal to CP. Then drilled holes to walls and hammered bolt mounting pieces in them.

Now i lift the CP and have 2 bolts that i tighten and it holds on place great 🙂👍.

Also finally making the marque.

Damn, didnt like the outcome on marque but ill take a timeout with it to get some software adjustments done. Problem was that it shows some small amount of light from edges. I put some black plastic tape to cover those edges for now 😂. Didnt attach it either yet.

But that simple blue works quite well with the blue controls contrast.

1/4" or 1/2" thick,  Self adhesive, Black Weatherstripping all the way around the edges of the marquee box (on the inside obviously) will deal with lightbleed and shouldn't leave a shadow

I have a small question about the screen im using. Its a 32" tv as i wrote before. It has HDMI and VGA. Display adapter doesnt have HDMI, so im using a converter there from DVI to HDMI.
My small problem is that the TV does not wake up when receivin signal from the computer. I have to turn it on (ok, its one press on remote controller, but still annoying :)).

Will this be fixed if i just change the display adapter with a HDMI one, anyone has experience on this?

How the electics work now:

1. I turn the power switch on - tv led is red, waiting for signal from remote.
2. I press the red arcade button on back to start the computer - computer starts itself
3. I have to "turn on" the tv with remote

Thats it, all things running.

When turning the electrics off, i just press the red button and all services close and computer turns off, and then just turn the power switch to "off".

Thx for any thoughts :D.

There should be an option in the menu look for an option to power on after power loss.  Do a search for the service manual for your make/model of television.
