If they focused for more than 10 seconds on the control panel and coin door, it would have at least made a decent wall decoration.

What's the story with the R Pi? Why do people on this board dislike them? I use em for console games via Retropie and it's excellent... Seems like it would be perfect for a simple Mame cabinet... Small, silent, low power, low heat, just powerful enough for probably all the classics.

Am I missing something?

Ah okay so it seems common to run Mame from circa 2003 on RPi's. Just not good enough emulation quality then? I remember when I built my first cabinet back around 2002-2003, I seem to recall pretty much all the classic games running great. Maybe not though  :dunno

basically, yes.

if you've nothing to compare them to they might seem fine

if you know what you're looking for, or have used original hardware extensively, or know the games at an above average level then they're awful, there have been emulation improvements even to classics as recently as the current MAME release.

and somehow they're still better than the crappy 39-in-1 etc. boards, which for some reason I'm seeing people use as a benchmark for correct these days when they're anything but as they're based on even older even buggier emulation.

back in 2002 (and earlier) MAME got away with it more because running arcade games on a PC at all was still quite a novel thing so people tended to be blown away by that and looked past all the obvious flaws and imperfections in the emulation.  these days things are held to much more correct standards.

Hopefully the fact that you have to ask this question will cause some to realize their reactions are a wee bit disproportionate to what they are reacting to.

To directly answer your question, the recent compulsion to dis the Pi and Pi proponents has become the current manner of signalling that you're one of the cool kids, or desperately want to be accepted by them. Not that valid points aren't occassionally being made, but I understand how the current obsession with the subject can be baffling if you haven't been paying attention.

I'd say it's quite the opposite.

The scene seems to have become filled by the 'cool kids' who think that sticking a Pi in a cabinet is the hip and cool thing to do because it costs them almost nothing and they can claim to be into all that retro jazz without really understanding any of it.  Same for the modern 'all in one' console type things, or mini-consoles using similar tech, people buy one and suddenly think they're the center of all knowledge on the systems they support.

The people saying they're bad and dissing them are the ones who have been around long enough to have seen the massive improvements made over the years, the ones with a real understanding of the games who appreciate them at more than the superficial 'it looks and play something like the arcade game might have done' level.  Same for those dissing Retroarch etc. because they can see beyond all the 'cool kid' BS who found out about it because it's what they run on their hacked consoles and phones and see that what is being done isn't actually helpful in the long run and is only going to drag things off course for those trying to do things properly.  The people dissing these things very much are not trying to be cool, or fit in with the cool kids, they're the ones trying to pass down a bit of wisdom from over the years.

As I've said before, emulation is science, it's a research field, if you're relying on 17 year old research which has been superseded many times then you have a problem.

ugly crap out there targeting this hobby.

I was thinking about this, and the biggest problem isn't the ugliness of it.  A child that plays iPad games has NO IDEA what that sticker is, or why they would have to mount the iPad there, just to play a game.  Its for parents to feel cool. (I don't know when geeky became cool, but its annoying)

I want to hear more about the profound advances in emulation that have changed the play experience from 2002 to now.  The way that Donkey Kong draws the levels does not count.

I like the R-pi a lot but more for educations and not so much for MAME/Gaming. At the same time I don't get the hate for it  :dunno , I have a retro pi set up but hardly us it these days because one I'm to busy and two I have a Mac and PC that do a better job.

I mostly used the Rpi for NES (nestopea core), SNES, GBA, Sega ever thing up too the 32X, PC Engine, and the occasional PS1 RPG. When I did play an arcade game on it I found my self using FBA as the pi will run the latest version. I know FBA is not as accurate as MAME but I often found my self just trying games I heard about here and never played the original, so I don't see the loss.

PIs are great for putting in lame weecades that you slap ---smurfy--- artwork on.  Anyone know where I can get one of those for $1,200....

I mean I would agree with that but at the same time we have people using pentium 4 PCs and no one complains.  :dunno

Any thoughts on FBA generally?

Enlighten me please?

There's nothing wrong with using a Pi, especially when you need a really small form factor. The issue comes when someone using a pi expects it to run games it cant, or emulate faster than it can, or wants help running *nix commands. The less accurate emulation and things of that nature never bothered me, it is about playing the games. To be honest, its amazing that the pi can run what it can. Personally, if you have a full sized arcade machine, I don't see the appeal of a pi over a PC. Not only in terms of performance, but also in ease of use for the typical end user.

I mean I would agree with that but at the same time we have people using pentium 4 PCs and no one complains.  :dunno
PBJ is anti Weecade, so there is a bias. That and people drop $150 in parts then like J said, try to sell them for $1200.
As for P4s, I haven't seen a project use one of those in years, got a link to the project so I can see it? I'm all about repurposing old hardware but even a core2duo is too old for me.

I like the R-pi a lot but more for educations and not so much for MAME/Gaming. At the same time I don't get the hate for it
At the risk of further triggering the folks that insist everything be a joke (tellingly, certain individuals can be dead serious without eliciting comment), your confusion is exactly the same as Jakobud's confusion. We're soaking in the over-reaction while the alleged initial action is damned hard to find. I wouldn't give it any more thought - they're just bonding over a shared fantasy.

Unbunch your panties, bro. It's just jokes. You're taking this arcade emulation ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- way too seriously. And, no, that is not code for "OMG the Illuminati are coming!"  You seem prone to making that kind of mistake. That's something you might want to get checked out.
