  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Jamma switcher hunt.
« on: April 23, 2018, 10:13:51 pm »
Hello.

I have an Area 51 machine that I want to turn into a multicade. I'm going to buy a 60-1

I've been looking at Jamma switchers and they seem to ether cost a lot (mikes arcade) or risk being defective (the Chinese ones.)

All things considered this is the one I'm thinking about. However before I commit I would like some feedback from someone who might have dealt with this board or someone more knowing about switchers.

any feedback would be appreciated. thanks much.

Area 51 is a horizontal game.
60 in one is a vertical game.

Makes them incompatible for a switcher, unless you like playing sideways.  :-)

In my opinion, Area 51 is a bad choice for a multicade.  There are no controls!  I'd pick a JAMMA cab with controls first, then worry about making it a multi JAMMA.

These seem to be well received over on KLOV.

I'm planning to buy one at some point.

Yeah, I've been considering these ones as well. I like that they supply -5v to each board...but are all the boards powered at the same time?

Leave your Area 51 alone. If you really want a 60 in 1 then I can pretty much promise that someone would trade you one straight out for the Area 51.

I bought one of his early 2 game switchers. I run NBA Jam and High Impact Football in a Dynamo. Works great.

Let me clarify my Area 51 is not original. when I bought it it came in a generic cabinet. I looked under the panel and it even had holes for joysticks and buttons. The shop owner put a board over the metal frame to cover them up. So my intention was to move the guns to the side and put joysticks and buttons back in.

Also I though the 60 in 1's had options for screen positions? I heard they have dip switches that control screen orientation? if not that seems like an oversight to me.

Can someone confirm 60 in 1's are vertical?

After doing some digging it seems I was mistaken about the 60 in 1's ability to rotate the video. sad day, but at least I know know instead of buying everything to figure it out then.

Thanks much.

The 60-in-1’s are definitely vertical. There are no screen options. Period.

The 19-in-1’s are horizontal.

I've seen the 19-1's but they don't have the good stuff like Pac Man, Digdug, and what not.

It's all good though. my idea was to build a cabinet anyway. But because space is a premium in my home I wanted to combine and save room. I think I will make a cocktail cabinet.

Cocktail cabinets take less room in storage, otherwise they take up as much room as about 4 regular games once you add the chairs.

Yeah, I've been considering these ones as well. I like that they supply -5v to each board...but are all the boards powered at the same time?

Just wanted to answer my own question.  Here's the features list from the manual:

 Supports 2, 4, 6, or 8 JAMMA boards
 Only 1 JAMMA board is powered at a time.
 No external remotes required
 Games are switched by holding Player1-Start and Player2-Start for 1.5 seconds, or alternate
buttons can be connected.
 Supports 6 button inputs per player
 Supports up to 20 Amps on 5V
 -5V power is switched for each board
 JAMMA extension harnesses are typically not needed.

This is a very nice feature-set and hits every requirement I was looking for. Not only supplying -5v, but switched -5V per board is really nice.  Also dig that not all boards are powered at the same time, AND that you can set an alternate dedicated button for switching between boards.
Looks like I'll have to pull the trigger on this one!
