I've been involved in cabs for a long time and used MAME since it came out, but I haven't dabbled in emulation very much in quite a while.  I had some spare parts laying around and decided to build up a new PC for my cabinet and had a question for people that have been building/setting things up more recently than I...  So what version of Windows is the favorite to run on cabs now?  My old setup was WinXP 32 bit but thinking 64 bit now to take advantage of the RAM in the new system and such...  I know XP 64 bit is kind of a lame horse with 64 bit drivers and may not support some newer hardware...

So anyway, what's the popular option now?

Hmm, so you think Win10 is better functionally/speed wise than Win7 on a cab?

Real hardware > emulation

Real hardware > emulation

Explain to me how this is in any way relevant to my question?

Just funnin around. I guess technically my Naomi2 is running an embedded version of windowsCE like the dreamcast does.

To answer your question, XP64 is garbage and everyone runs win7x64 unless they are running a Pi, which for some reason , is the preferred hardware nowadays.

I think it's because despite being lower speck and technically inferior in almost every way to cheep PC, a Raspberry pi set up is very essay to do and yields, for most casual builders a completely usable experience. Final burn alpha on Retro pi is quite usable.

Any way, you can find a win 7 key supper cheep.

I have been on the fence with buying a version of windows or trying out lubuntu.
Has anyone here had good success running a cabinet through linux?  It looks like there are quite a few emulators.

Yeah, I didn't have any intention of running XP64...  Too many gotchas with that OS.  I just was wondering if people were sticking with XP32 (which wouldn't take advantage of all the RAM in this system) or running 7/8 or 10...  I had a bunch of spare parts and some stuff I scavenged from ecycle at work and built up an i5-2400 w/8GB, 80GB SSD for OS and 500HDD for ROMs, and a 750Ti which is a significant leap above the AMD XP 3000+ system that's in it now (should be able to add NAOMI/NAOMI 2 and Atomiswave now).  I had considered just porting my MALA FE setup over to the new system, but I've been looking into trying out Attractmode as it seems to be one of the best ones out now.

That actually brings me to another question assuming anyone out there has any experience with it...  My P1 stick is a U360 and I had auto-switching set up in MALA and worked perfectly, does Attractmode handle the U360 mapping just as well?

I had no idea win7 could be gotten so cheap.
I guess it's because it is out of main support.
I thought I would need to spend $90 on a version of windows for an old computer so was looking at Linux.  This looks better.

LINUX is grate but doesn't support some to the windows reliant shaders. Attract mode is great on ever platform I have tried it on, would magian the it will work just fine on windows.

Boot time on my 2011.5 iMac 27” with virtual box and on my arcade setup i3 3.1ghz yielded win 10 fastest version of Windows I’ve tested. Everything UI can be hidden within a minute. Can’t beat it. There’s no reason to use windows 7 over 10 1603 enterprise.

I don't have a cab but been using linux for N64 and lower emulation in the past.
i've also used tiny 7.

lubuntu has  retroarch in the repo's and i believe there is a package for attractmode out there.
i prefer to just compile my own emulators and use minimal desktop in linux for emulation because i used to use old p4 level pc's with 2gb of ram.

now i use rpi3. my first cab will have one with a CRT TV at 240p.

Windows XP is so bad, why would you use it for any reason. In fact just smash that PC with a hammer it has been tainted for to long and must be destroyed.

XP was a good OS back in the day.

Just very out of date now and full of security holes.
Though if you using it offline thats not really a issue lol

Yes, I'm junking the old system that was running XP anyway, that's why I was just curious what people were running on their current setups because I was building up a new box...

Windows XP, but only because that was what was current when I built my cabs. None of my cabs are connected to the internet.

If I were to build a new cab today I would most likely use Windows 10.

I keep my cab current, going from Win XP to Windows 7 (nice at the time) to Windows 8 (yuck) to Windows 10 (nice).  If you go with Windows 10, just make sure you get the Pro version so that you can apply policy settings to turn some of the automatic stuff off (like updates).  I would not run the Home version on my cab.

Yeah, I just settled on 7 x64...  Really didn't need Win10 on it, such as the auto updates and whatnot.  7 is certainly modern enough to support all the software and hardware I'm using...
