Trackball talk- Blades of Steel in MAME? Anyone playing it?
« on: April 07, 2018, 08:48:06 pm »
Figured I'd try Blades of Steel on the my MAME trackball setup  (mame184).
I have a 3inch Happ trackball and a Bob Roberts USB interface.

The Hockeye game looks pretty neat, there is very little talk about the game per a quick google and byoac search.
I have the controls mapped and trackball settings are correct, but the player doesn't seem to move.
Not sure if it is a working game or not.

Anyone have experience with this one?

I found quite a variety of games that play well with trackball, instead of spinner.
Everything on the list below seems to work great except the Hockey game.
And OMG it felt great to throw a long bomb in Atari Football then run like he!!.  Last time I did that was probably 1979 or 80 at the Skating Rink.   I am thinking a 4 player Football cocktail machine is on the horizon, now.

So far I've got-
Arkanoid
Revenge of Doh.
Atari Football
Centipede
Crystal Castles
Golden Tees from 98 to 06
Kickman
Major Havoc
Marble Madness
Millipede
Missile Command
Off the Wall
Quantum
Reactor
Simpsons Bowling
Super Breakout
Tehkan World Cup
Tempest
Warlords
World Class Bowling

I used to play Atari football at our skating rink as well.  After playing your Warlords cocktail I've been kicking around a multi standup cocktail that would play Warlords, Atari Football and Track and Field.  Kicking around anyway.  In my head the CP seems to busy.

Have you tried Namco Classic Football?  I'm not sure if it is playable in MAME yet but it looks fantastic.

Not familiar with that one, I'll have to look it up.

Last I tried in MAME I couldn't get trackball to work right. it wanted back and forth toggled buttons for running.

The parent set "Blades of Steel (version T)" does not appear to support trackball, it doesn't even get tested in service mode

The clones, Blades of Steel (version L) and Blades of Steel (version E) do.

I'll make sure they're more clearly labeled in MAME.

Awesome.
I confirmed that E and L work great with trackball.  Interesting game and great announcer dialogue.

Sure appreciate the ease of Attract Mode.
Makes it very fast to get the art and then it is easy to remove a game from the game xml for attract mode, such as pulling the blades of steel T version from the menu list.
