Where did all the down time go?
« on: April 05, 2018, 11:23:25 pm »
After moving back to the US all me time has been completely dominated by work, wife, & kids. I find myself wondering where do you guys find any time for hobbies.

Honestly I don't.  Projects that should take me around a week take me months these days.  Ask Boomslang... he's been waiting for me to release a new version of TS2 all winter.

My insomnia helps some.... when you can't sleep and it's too late to do anything normal it is a good time to putz around with projects.  I feel your pain though.  People always say stupid things like "you've got to make time" but life rarely works that way.

Having no children helps. But time is hard to come by especially if you have a ton of other hobbies.

First, you plan way ahead and have kids in your early 20's so you are a "free man" by 45.  Then get divorced at 40, wait another 5 years, and you have all the time in the world.  It also helps to build a house 2 minutes from your work so you have virtually no commute, then get a job that allows you to be fairly flexible with your time, so if you want to spend a Friday working on a project at home instead of sitting in the office, you can do that with little planning.

At least that worked for me. YMMV

Life is funny, when you are young you lack the money or time to do what you really want to do.  When you finally retire, you are too old to care about most of it any more, even if you now have the time and money to do it.

Yea money is tight these days. But for me, time is the killer. My wife is taking most of this yer off to spend with the kids. You would this would make money the bigger issue, but buy the time I get home from work My wife is near the end of her rope. It’s hard to be home with two little children. We both try hard to give the other time but it’s always fleeting. Life was easyer over seas with two incomes, a Nanny, and hous keeper.

Hopefully when my son goes to camp in June, then PreK in fall we’ll all get a little more time.

I got a lot of my free time back when I started selling arcade games instead of buying and fixing them.

Divorced is awesome.
too bad kids are younger but at an age where the youngest can now work the microwave without burning the house down so I expect to get more things done.

Jenn loves building games, and with the passion comes concessions, Work binges, sometimes almost 2 days long, and working to sheer exhaustion have worked for me, but not without consequence,....Spent a kings ransom, Lost jobs, forget to eat, virtually disowned by family, and you guys are basically my only friends during these nights in the dungeon.

Getting back to the original question, I simply carve out chunks of time where my family knows I’m going to be working on hobby stuff. There’s a special understanding now around ZapCon that I’m going to be busy, but at the same time, I’m not going to cut into family time just because I want to paint something. I want them to like this hobby, not see it as something taking me away from them.

**Jenn slides a refreshing Fresca to crazy uncle Jim.... Well anyway, to you with family, You may want to consider the nature of what your doing. Old monitors and boards are a plethora of heavy metal poisons. And The chemicals associated with the hobby,  Killing off your loved ones is not the answer....Heres a fun example if you guys can "find the time" (Giggle :duckhunt)

Yea my last post came out wrong, not trying to cut my family time. My kids are the best and I love spending time with them. 10 years later and my wife is still my best friend. Although I don't think it's selfish to want a little alone time, just a hr or two a week.

At the moment work is eating up a lot of my time. At the new job, where I'm a PE teacher in one of poorest and low preforming Elementary schools in NYC. My actual job is going well, but I'v been waging a gorilla war to drag my school into the 21st century. When I arrived there was only one class room with computers for student use and they were 10 plus year old laptops running XP. They weren't aloud on the school network and were running old CD rom games. I moved them over to Lubuntu and started the first in a series of Donors choose project for  R-pi's, 1080p monitor's, mice/keyboards, etc.

I've now gotten 6 technology centers funded different classrooms, that's about $5,500 and 30 computers. A 7th is up now, no link because I'm not hitting you guys up for cash. This has me doing lots of pear training, support, and planning around the new computers, keep in mind I'm the PE teacher.

I used to make time after the kids go to sleep but now thats when I do things like planning for my own classes. I could just do my job and go home but I feel like this is really helping.

Thank Man,

I'm debating on moving every thing over to Pi-Net, so keeping my eyes out for network switches (with at least a single gigabit or 10/100/1000mbit port for the server). But not 100% sure I'm going to go that way yet.

I assume by “dummy” you mean unmanaged switches, yes. My understanding is that administration of Cisco gear is its own whole crazy specialty and the additional flexibility isn’t needed for this use.

I think hopefully the little revolution our local teachers started is going to eventually lead to some national education reform.  It's rare I get to be proud of something political my state does these days so I'm counting this one.  ;)

Thanks man, 5 ports per switch. Each class room is getting 4 student work stations.

Yes, this is some thing you should be proud of. I was watching an interview about the strike in Oklahoma, this  20 year special education veteran is taking home was a little more then $1,000 a month.

I don't have any gear with that few ports. No way to do home runs back to a central 24 port switch?

Not in a practical way, we are in a large building. Thanks for the offer.

Small switches are cheep enough that I can buy one for testing then do a donors choose project to get a school set.

Back in the day, money was tight and time was plentiful. While money isn't plentiful, it's no longer my #1 concern. Time on the other hand, it's a scarce resource. My projects have slowed as the family grew. I was smart about it and cut my projects back so I didn't have stacks of unfinished projects laying around. I built a few cabs in 2015 and 2016. I built a full size R2, and some fun Raspberry Pi projects, but most of my projects now are around the house. Like yots, my family knows when certain projects are coming up and I need to carve out time for them, I just make sure my other time is spent doing family related projects. It's a balancing act for sure.

As for the arcade games, I'm at a point where the arcade setup I have now plays just about everything I need. I turn them on rarely, but they are nice to have. When I'm gaming, it's usually on the Wii or Wii-U with the kids. Currently playing Mario Kart. Lots of fun.

As for teachers.... I'd like to see them get good pay, and I'd like to see classes be better equipped, but in no way should that be done through a tax increase. Taxes are outrageous where I live. I'm totally fine with the classrooms having their fundraisers to improve the classrooms. Taxing the whole community so the classrooms can have flexible seating or other niceties, I'm over it.

I’ve lived where you live and in no way is your tax system the same as other areas.

I spent 21 years as an educator in public schools. The only way I found I could make more money was to move to a private school this year.
