Superman Cab
« on: April 02, 2018, 10:11:54 am »
Im just showing off my Custom Mame cab. Im a huge superman fan so i recreated the 1988 superman arcade cab. Nothing is original. I built it all from the ground up. I've been dying for somewhere to post it online so i hope people here can appreciate it! Its my first ( and likely last...)

Im a new member but I've come here for guidance over the past 15 months of this project....(i never have freetime. Lol)

Comments/critiques welcome!

That looks great. I love the bright colors you used.  :applaud:

I actually like that game and have thought about building a similar cab.

It really needs a coin door though.

End result looks great, looks like a conversion not a ground up build.

Do you have any "in progress" pictures to post?

I've actually got a Vindicators converted to a Superman... kinda-sorta donated it to a church like 10 years ago... they're probably ready for me to take it back.

I really like the fact that you picked one central theme and stuck with it. A cabinet doesn’t need to scream “OMG! BIDEO GAMEZ!!!”

LOLOL

i do like all kinds of cabs but i def wanted mine to have one central theme for aesthetics. Even though there's no coin door people still think i bought an old machine. That's exactly what i was going for.

About as pointless as building a cabinet. If you're good with a board sticking out of a pc with no asthetics, more power to you. I want to feel like i brought the "Arcade life" directly into my home office. So to accomplish that I'll probably get that coin door.

About as pointless as building a cabinet.

I can see both sides of it. All of my actual arcade games are set on free play. So I could say coin doors on actual cabs can be pointless ;)
Sadly I havent had a MAME cab in a long time, but when I did, it either had a coin button , or a coin up short cut.

So while aesthetically speaking, a coin door looks better (to me) functionally speaking its not really needed (to me). YMMV.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice cab. And yes, a coin door for some is ornamental (I use tokens on my games, so doors are a must). But if you’re going to do it, do it right! :)

Agree, a nice coin door will really add to this build. Other than that, I can't critique, this is a great cab that knows what it is. I absolutely love it!

I don’t know your location, but here’s a nice over/under coin door. If you’re local, you could score a great deal on it:

Thanks!!!

As much as im hearing it, i think I've decided that i WILL be getting one. After all its a "replica" and its just not measuring up if it doesn't replicate the feel of the original machine, which was that it was commercial and had a coin door. Therefore.....This replica needs a coin door.

If you don’t have a coin door, you’ve got a piece of furniture that plays video games.

Or you could just take it to the next level and build a piece of furniture disguised to play bideo gamez.

I've got a coin door off an Arachnid Super Six you can have for free if you get to Houston.  Would have to weigh it to get a shipping estimate....

Now that i think of it, gas may be more than shipping.

And are you sure? Free? Because that'd be awesome!!! My budget is shot for this thing. Lol.

I'll double check that I still have it.  I had a machine out on my porch and the humidity killed it.  There's a pretty active collector community in this state, you close to any major cities?

The love of this community has me wondering if maybe id like to build another cabinet in the future. I was set on just doing one, but to be apart of this seems to good to just do once and leave behind.

We grow on you. Like a fungus.

You are going to wake up one day and say "Hey, I would like a cab with a CRT monitor in it."

Kiss you discretionary income goodbye. >:D

Yeah, turned out I basically stripped everything out of that cabinet that was part of the wiring harness and junked the rest.  Really need to throw all that garbage away.

That's a hard question to answer. The best i can say is.....as close as i could get it. We did mess upp a spot or two causing it to have its own unique design but to most, its almost identical.

It could also lead as a gateway to collecting dedicated machines. I had all these multi game ideas in mind when I started, but I find much more joy restoring dedicated cabinets now.

**NotThatSuperJenn puts on big glasses as to not be recognized.... (Giggle), I would have to agree, I had big dreams for Mame back in the day (Nice job on that one BTW) But got into dedicated and never looked back. anything coin/op really. games, jukes, slots, candy venders....Although Jenn did sell the pool tables a few years back due to space and maintenance problems.

I'm on the other side - dozens of machines over the years. I owned a few dedicated but always went back to emulation. Too many weird issues with real cabinets to justify the differences.

Great looking machine. If I were to change 1 thing, it would be the hardware to mount the joysticks. Use some black carriage bolts. You could also buy some black carriage bolts at home depot and grind off the names, and spray paint black. Minor thing.

I mildly wondered if anyone would ever think about the fact that those are just regular bolts. In person no one has said anything, but you make a good point. I may just consider it.

and on a practical side of carriage bolts, you can be rubbing the bottom of your hand against them while playing. It is going to be noticeable then.

Depending on the size you need, you can often get ones without manufacturers stamps on the end, and some of the arcade supply vendors carry them.

Just an example:

I thought that at first but the right side player has no blue in thier supermans color scheme. Most original machines have red on right to match the red supermans color scheme. There's no blue in his uniform. Look at the start button. It has a pic of each superman by it
