What's Your Favorite Settings for Analog Games?
« on: March 31, 2018, 03:32:35 pm »
I've been pulling my hair out trying to dial in speed and sensitivity settings for analog games in MAME, and just can't see to get them just right. In some cases, I can't get them to be playable!

So for games like Food Fight, Star Wars, Crystal Castles, Marble Madness, etc.... what settings do you play with?

Is there a place online that lists optimized setting? For something pretty essential, I'm surprised to have no found any info on this anywhere.

Thanks

There is no list because each device is different. I'm assuming your using a trackball even though you didn't say. But each one is different so you just have to play with it until you get something that feels good.

There is a list of sensitivity for spinners but its not in any way complete.

Usually if you just try it and if its not sensitive enough you tun it up and if its too sensitive you turn it down. Not really a big deal.

Yes, I was referring to trackball games.

True, I could go through the trial and error myself to dial in each game, but if there was a repository, or even people's personal preferences, on specific MAME settings, then it would save a lot of time and effort.

Like monk said its different for each device due to the turn counts of those devices and the original turn count of each game.

You can calculate the value though if you know the turn count of your device and the game.

From the linked thread, I have used this equation with a TT2 spinner (1200 count) and I know it does Tempest well.
--An example from the first link below: Tempest, 72 count
--if the control you use has 1200 counts per turn, the sensitivity calculation is: Sensitivity = 100 * 72 / 1200 = 6%

BUT I do not understand the information presented about Centipede and Crystal Castles.
Could someone clarify how to use the equation for a happ 3inch trackball for, at least Centipede?
thank you.

Copied from the other thread:
Trackball   resolution   Notes
Happ 2.25 inch trackball   149.2 (no wear)   2.25 inch ball, 0.362 inch roller, 24 tooth encoder disc
Happ 3 inch trackball   167.4 (no wear)   3 inch ball, 0.43 inch roller, 24 tooth encoder disc
Atari 4.5 inch trackball   330.6 (no wear)   4.5 inch ball, 0.49 inch roller, 36 tooth encoder wheel
Trackball Games

Game   Trackball   Multiplier   Notes
Crystal Castles   Atari/Happ 3 in   2x
Marble Madness   Atari/Happ 3 in   4x

Trackball Games: Game Name, Notes
Crystal Castles, 1st screen BB moves length of line above his head from center of trackball moved to one side
Centipede, 1 trackball move 1 end to other (stock tb) 2 1/2 mushroom lengths

Does the MAME version or CPU speed factor into this equation at all?
