Sega Chihiro Emulation
« on: March 26, 2018, 01:44:21 pm »
Hey Y'all, this isn't new news but I thought it might be of interest to a few of you Sega fans out there if (like me) this is the first you've heard of it. Seems a new guy has taken up the reins of original Xbox Emulation and has resurrected OG Xbox emulator Cxbx and re-branded it Cxbx-Reloaded. And with this, it appears that Sega Chihiro emulation is getting a step closer. YouTube user UK Arcades has uploaded a couple of videos that show him managing to navigate through the menus and (almost) get in-game on the beta arcade version of Outrun 2 and Virtua Cop 3. Another YouTube user called Luffy Tam has actually managed to get in-game with Virtua Cop 3, albeit with some pretty messed up graphics.

So yeah, good to know that progress is still being made in this department. I thought any interest in trying to emulate Chihiro games had evaporated years ago. I never got play (or even see) Virtua Cop 3 in the arcade, so would be great to actually play it at home some day.

It would be nice if it happened, but I've lost all hope of xbox hardware getting emulated.  Let's give him a few more months and see if he decides to give up. :(

Out of curiosity, will this give access to any game that has not been playable until now? ie, some of the Sega games have had really good ports to other systems, or some of them have already been emulated in different ways, so wondering which fully new games one could expect if this happens?

Virtua Cop 3 is really the main unconverted game I'm interested in. Fortunately the OG Xbox got ports of most of the other notable Chihiro games like House of the Dead 3, Outrun 2 and, er, Crazy Taxi: High Roller. Ghost Squad got a conversion on the Wii (not sure how it stacks up to the Chihiro version though). You can see the full list of games at the link here: https://segaretro.org/Sega_Chihiro#Chihiro_Games

Thanks for the link. I thought that system had many more games. Interesting, so few of them...

Yeah. Definitely VC3. I've wanted that for a long time. I'll take the lindbergh version of OR2006 :)

I'm guessing Outrun Online Arcade was pretty much a straight port of the Lindy version of Outrun 2 SP DX (which would tie in with the other Lindebergh games that did get PS3 conversion, like HOTD4 and After Burner Climax), which might explain why it looks so much nicer than the PC version of Coast 2 Coast and has got the missing end of course animations. I wonder if there's any extra stuff in the Lindbergh version of Outrun that wasn't in Online Arcade?

Oooooh, timely. 'Runs naively on Windows with no virtulisation'. Exciting times!

Edit: Natively not naively - this is why I shouldn't post on forums when I get back from the pub...

I was a teeny tad sceptical when I first heard that Lindbergh emulation was getting added to Teknoparrot however many weeks or months ago it was first announced. In reality though, Reaver's got nothing to gain by lying about it and the YouTube footage of the actual arcade version of AB Climax running looks genuine. Plus, all the other stuff he's said would appear in future versions of Teknoparrot (like FFB, link up, Sega Europa R games, TTX2 games) has happened, so I'm confident this isn't some kind of a wind up.

On a semi related note, this seems like a good opportunity to shamelessly plug an After Burner Cimax related YouTube video I made a few months back...  ;D

The fact that the game hasn't been ported to more platforms is criminal imho.  Sega could do like they did with house of the dead overkill and just have a small team port it.

Yeah, totally with you on that Howard. I don't know if After Burner Climax fell afoul of licensing issues in the same way that Outrun 2 did, hence the lack of further ports. I remember at the start of sonic and all Star Transformed there was a licensing disclaimer about the use of the Grumman F14 Tomcat. Or it could just be Sega being a bunch of useless ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- as per normal. The latter is probably more plausible.

Do you know how to unlock those tracks in Outrun 2-Xbox 360? I got it a while ago for that purpose mainly but I don't quite know yet what one needs to do to unlock them...

Nope, 'fraid not. They were specifically created by Sumo digital for the Xbox port.

Do you know how to unlock those tracks in Outrun 2-Xbox 360? I got it a while ago for that purpose mainly but I don't quite know yet what one needs to do to unlock them...

You need to clear all Stage 4 missions in the challenge bit to unlock Bonus Stage 1 (Scud Race tracks) and all stage 6 missions to unlock Bonus Stage 2 (Daytona USA 2 tracks). You can also cheat and add the password TIMELESS (in capitals) on the gallery password screen. If you complete the challenges the bonus stages will stay unlocked, but if you use the password cheat, you'll need to enter it every time you turn the system on. If you've got the Japanese version, there's no password option so you have to complete the challenges, but on the flipside the Japanese version has got superior bonus stages to the Western version of OR2 as they are cosmetically closer looking to the actual Scud Race and Daytona 2 stages.

Nice one, with that info I found some details of other unlockables. Putting it here for future reference as I'll come back. Thank you m8.

I'm happy about it too  :applaud:

just wondering: In a linked outrun 2 sp cab, is the cooperative "driver change" the only 2 player option (like visible in the youtube movie)? Or can you also drive head to head in the same course like most arcade racers?

I've never actually played the arcade version of Outrun 2 SP (only regular Outrun 2), but I'm sure that there must be a normal head-to-head 2 player mode.

The driver change gimmick was just a mode that apparently didn't go over too well.  It's totally optional.  If the emulation is good and force feedback is enabled that'll probably mean the end of fxt..... I only started the project because emulating the arcade seemed far off.

FXT will still be the only way to play the original Outrun 2 tracks with FFB though 8) unless Reaver somehow gets Chihiro games working with FFB in Teknoparrot as well...

Also, I'm a little woried about resolution.. or2 seems to be run natively as 800x480 which is far lower than 1080p or 4k. I can play the PC version at 4K... So I hope this is also possible with the arcade version... I see a lot of "resolution patches" for other TP supported games, so hopes are high

He said FFB is about 90% correct in the stream. He's uploading it now for people who want to go nuts. The first release is supposed to support OR2 and after burner climax.

I didn't play the arcade version of OR2, but is there much difference between the original arcade and the many ports that the game had in PC, PS3/Xbox 360 online, PS2, XBox?

And if so, which version could be the closer to the arcade?

Have a read through the video description of this video of mine from awhile back - I discuss the differences and pros and cons of each version at length. There was too much to fit in the description word limit so I continue in a comment I've pinned: https://youtu.be/Db2DRo6D1Pg

According to the forum that-must-not-be-named it looks like Lindbergh in Teknoparrot will be Win 10 only at present. Booooooo!  :banghead:

It's probably dependent upon a certain version of direct x.  I'm not sure why that would be necessary to emulate a 20 year old game, but I'm sure there is a reason.  Honestly unless you are using a really old pc I don't know why you wouldn't be on win 10 at this point.... I mean it was a free upgrade for a whole year.

That seems like an odd decision, but then again I've never really used Xaudio for anything substantial, so maybe there is a reason I'm not aware of.

Some windows-based arcade games support you typing the res you want into a config file. SR3, for example. If a patcher is needed, it might depend on the community. I'm ideally looking for an 800x600 mode myself, assuming the game isn't slaved to v-sync.

What else apart from WMMT5 has a patcher, btw?

Reaver is working on an OR2 res patcher today. He said he will put it on github.

I haven't been able to get the game to work though. Has anyone had luck / have advice? Nvidia GTX 1050, i5-7500, & Win10 x64.

there is a VGA res which will properly suit you. Currently has 3 elf files you can load. 1 is the original, 1 is VGA and 1 is HD res

big thanks to Boomslang. Updating my nvidia drivers from 388.13 (oct 2017) to 391.35 (mar 28, 2018) + a computer restart made or2 pop up!

So is it out yet for non patreon people?  I honestly don't have time to play it, but I can at least install it and give it a try.  I'm super excited for this.

Nice.  You know now that someone has it running, I might be able to pull the decrypted layout data from the hud and inject it into fxt.  Ditto for the force-feedback.  The only reason I couldn't do that was the file containers being different.  I dunno though... we've got OR2 running now, so there isn't much point.

Hmmm, I'm assuming Reaver will post any OR2 res patch on the teknogods github.

I miss so damn much by not being able to hang on the disc very often, it really blows. Thanks to all for posting info on here though, it kinda keeps all of us in the loop :)

I don't have access to the teknoparrot version just yet, but the resolution patches should be these:

What could be achieved with that 'decrypted layout data from the hud' and the new force feedback, if possible? ie, your work with FTX is awesome but, could it be improved with something else?
I guess the difference would be that even with OR2 running now, Coast to coast 2006 had a lot more content...

This is great news MT thanks for sharing mate. Looking forward to progress. PGR2 on PC with enhanced graphics? Bring it!

Well right now the HUD is positioned for 4:3 viewing, so when you use a widescreen resolution the hud is stretched.  If I could find the memory location of the hud data from 2sp, that game is widescreen so injecting those new values would fix the distortion.  Of course I'm making a HD hud, so all of that might be irrelevant anyway.  Force feedback is more iffy.... I don't know how many of the calculations made it into 2k6, but memory searching the running arcade version might lead to the code that does the calculations, and if they are still in 2k6 that would lead to more arcade accurate force feedback.

So is it out yet for non patreon people?  I honestly don't have time to play it, but I can at least install it and give it a try.  I'm super excited for this.

nah its only just come out for patreon so should be 2-3 weeks till public version. He kinda skipped the last public so a few people getting angry but im happy with Lindbergh

it works pretty well, just a few shader issues happening ocassionally and no network currently

Awesome. Is the Initial D music something you added intentionally or just a weird quirk of the particular OR2 SP dump you're using? That particular tune was playing in the background in a video I made a few years back of a split-screen comparison of Initial D: Arcade Stage running in two different versions of DEMUL and, sweet Jesus, after you've heard it a few times it turns into the worst kind of earworm that you'll find yourself humming in bed at 02:00am...

Still hoping Reaver manages to work some magic and get this working on Windows 7. I'm really keen to try Sega Race TV if it gets added.

Al you thought about shoving a cheap SSD or HDD in your PC and putting Windows 10 on it? You could dual boot to that and Windows 7. It's what I do. Just a thought mate :)

Exactly, or if you have another PC around (which I did), just have it exclusive for Windows 10 only things.
I also only try to use windows 7, but I don't want to miss out on anything that works on other platforms.

Cheers for the suggestions fellas, definitely something to consider in the future. At present though, as someone else on the forum once said, 'juice ain't worth the squeeze' as I have both After Burner Climax and Outrun Online Arcade (and House of the Dead 4) on my PS3, so unless something like Race TV gets cracked it's not really worth the expenditure of an HDD and a copy of Windows 10 (just would've been nice to have been able to get them working on PC without any jiggery-pokery in case my PS3 ever bites the dust, which judging by the fact the fan sounds like a 747 taking off these days is highly probable). If I do upgrade 10 Win 10 at some point I'd be curious to try the PC version of Hydro Thunder Hurricane, having recently found out it supports 60fps vs my 360's 30fps.

The graphics are stripped down and there is no multiplayer. I was so pissed when I realized the later (after I bought it..)! XInput only, so you will need an xinput device, input mapper 2, x360ce, etc.
