Fighting Games - Success with Leaf?

I am thinking of giving fighting games a try.  I would like to actually learn the game mechanics beyond button mashing.  However, I am not a micro-switch fan.  I have a horizontal cab that I could add the additional buttons, but the controller are currently Wico 8-way leaf joystick with leaf buttons.  Is it possible to learn fighting games on leaf buttons or is the "click" required for properly registering those combo strings?   I could build a dedicated cab for fighting games, but I would rather not if possible.

You will be fine. You only need microswitch if you are going competitive with them.
