My first build
« on: February 17, 2018, 01:37:39 pm »
After years of wanting to build one, i finally started building my first cabinet.
It is loosly based upon the weecade, but it has a deeper body, since i wanted to fit in my old full size atx board.
I custom designed the control panel using a sheet of aluminium that i bend using a home made bending tool.
Then i downloaded some button plans and started playing with the layout. I decided to use the Sega layout for the left player and the namco layout for player 2.this way your body is turned away from the other player creating more space.
I’m not a skilled woodworker, but i think i did a nice job. Next step is to place my monitor that i want to swivel.
First i thought it wouldn’t make a lot of difference, but once i played vertical shooters with the monitor in vertical position, i couldn’t go back. So i had to adopt my design a bit to accomodate the bigger swivel monitor that i bought yesterday for 5 euro.

By swivel, I assume you are rotating?  What mechanism are you using?  Love that CP!

Going to use parts of the stand from my hp 1955 monitor. Going to manually rotate it, until i know how to automate it.

Add the monitor today. But i think i need to lean it back a bit more. It’a to streep now when standing behind the controls.

Have been working on my cab for the past weeks and i’m Getting there.
Still need some new plexi for my bezel. The part I had wasn’t big enough.
Also need to paint the cab. I fitted my pc inside, using the mainbord tray from the old pc.
Need to secure the power supply. Made a hard disk tray using some plexi.
After painting I can start doing some cable management. I have a buzzing sound going trough the speakers. Most likely some static the audio cable pics up from bad cable management.
Also need to make a back door and add some fans to cool the system.
Added some locks to you cannot open the controlpanel.
And I need to add a power socket to the back.

Very Cool! Keep up the good work! Like the rotating monitor!

Been busy with the software side a lot lately, so the cabinet still isn’t finished.
But today I added a second monitor inside the bezel.
I use this monitor to display the controls for each system.
I used a 5” waveshare monitor. Perhaps I could have mounted a 7” with a bit of extra work, but the cab is already way over budget according to my wife. So I used a 5”. It’s a 800x480 pixel monitor.
I made the button artwork for the systems myself using Microsoft publisher.
To display the images I use HyperMarquee.

The rotating monitor is on hold for the moment.

Some updates

It has been a while since my last post, but i was working on the software side.
But the last weeks i have started to finish the build. Had to redo some woodwork since I wasn’t satisfied with it.
All the woodwork is ready and everything is painted. Made a new monitor bracket since I won’t be using the rotating monitor. Maybe in the future, or maybe I build a small unit for those games.
I used a Matt black finish and I didn’t use t-molding. Just sanding and bondo.
Made a baseplate to attach all electronic to so I can take it out as one unit.

Just when you think you are ready something will happen and you need to fix it.
After putting everything together I tried if everything was working, and bad luck strikes. My main monitor doesn’t work anymore. A small flat band cable had ripped so the monitor doesn’t work anymore.
Need to see if I can fix it tomorrow.

Update

Oké nearly a year later and the cab is almost done. After I bought a new monitor and installed it, my computer started to ackt weird. Long boot times, errors in windows, not getting past the bios. Tried to find a new cheap replacement, but prices for spare parts are so high I might as well buy a new cpu, mainboard and ram. Then I got a hp core i5 760 from a friend for free, and I thought I was back in business. Sadly ho uses it’s own mainboards with non atx plugs, so I couldn’t use my powersupply that I already installed in my cab. But swapping everything out eventually wasn’t a option because the hp powersupply didn’t have 2 6 pin connectors I needed for my graphics card.

So I started taking my mainboard out of the cab to reseat the cpu because I handled the mainboard by holding the big mugen cooler. I reseated the mainboard in my cab using only 3 screws so I could swap it out fast if I needed. Connecting only the graphics card and no drives, it started at once. So I thought I had fixed the issue. Reinstalled the mainboard again using all 9 screws, connecting everything up and.... NO BOOT????

Then I shifted my attention to the board spacers I used. I used a template to drill them into the bottom, but they had a bit to much clearance. So I then suspect that the motherboard standoffs shorted a few pins on the bottom of the mainboard. So I bought plastic o-rings to place between the standoffs and the mainboard and it finally works.
Only thing I need to do now is to order the graphics for the marquee.
