So I have this 500G hard drive with artwork...
« on: February 15, 2018, 10:19:07 pm »
Long time since I've been here. Man, things have evolved.
Anyway, I have been out of the hobby for a long time now, but at one point several of us mailed around a hard drive and made copies of the artwork from one of the sites that stopped hosting it. Been so long I can't recall...
But anyway, I have this drive full of artwork that I need to get to the right place. Anyone know who I should contact? It may be so widely distributed now that it's unimportant. I don't know.
Any guidance? And long live and love BYOAC. Still have two machines up and operating! About to pass one down to the next generation. I hope it lives on.

Possibly from "the Arcade Art Library" - would be nice if it is since that site vanished a couple years ago along with the artwork.  :dunno

You wanna throw it on a torrent site for a bit?
I'm sure more than a few of us would be ok with seeding for a bit.
Not me. My torrent server is full of porn.

I have only a couple concerns, but I want to know what the general community feels about it now. Here are my concerns:

1. I want to support those who are supporting the hobby. To me, that is #1. Period. Period. If there are reputable businesses out there that are going above and beyond, I would rather support them.

2. I am not sure if this is all in the public domain now, and I don't have the time to sort it out. If it's in the public domain, what's the issue? Why would anyone even care to get a whole drive of this stuff? Unless you're rolling off massive amounts of prints, it matters none. And you probably can't do as well a job as the others. And I want to protect their capital investments.

I am ready to hear any voice via PM. I really love this hobby. It gave a lot to me. I do not and will not be the one to screw it up for those who are honestly invested. If you're a printer wanting to break into a new space, I am not your guy. But best of luck.

Derv

BTW, I'm really crushed for time ATM but I will have time this weekend to really consider all the option and thanks for offering them!

I also share these concerns, which is why I would not put it up on a torrent site. I'd just share it to folks that are active contributing members and not looking to make a fast buck off the community.

Personally I'd like it for a database of reference material for artwork that I create. I've never and will never plagiarized a fellow artist's works, and quite honestly getting into the printing game is a nightmare both financially and temporally. Been there, done that, no thanks.

Not knowing exactly what the artwork is that you have makes it hard to really say if those concerns are legitimate or not. Since you mention in your original post :
Quote
at one point several of us mailed around a hard drive and made copies of the artwork from one of the sites that stopped hosting it. Been so long I can't recall...
It would seem that at least at some point a few years ago there was enough concern that those files would be lost to those building projects that could use them without having to pay someone that was just trying to profit off of art that someone else had originally designed ( ie. those like you mention that are just trying to print them to make a profit from them - since others do not have access to them so they could print them without paying extra fees. ) It would seem that making them available again would only help the community by getting them out there for everyone to have access to, so there is no incentive to pay someone that happens to have a copy of it - Since evidentally those in the community years back that participated in the mailing originally have either dissapeared or lost the copy of them that they had made in order to preserve access to them as they do not seem to be readily available unless I am mistaken ( SO it seems their fears of the loss of access has already happened at some point )

Personnally I would think having them available for everyone to use in their projects could only help the community as it would help keep others from charging to gain access to them - Figure it is much easier for those that just want to profit off the work to do so if only they have access to the work rather than being able to download them and then have them printed locally.

Figure at this point the original artists are not receiving any compensation for the work whether the files are available or not.  IF the original artists were still around and were selling the work or at least getting a percentage of any use - I could see not making them available or having a single source of availability that was compensating the original artist. But that is not the case with thesse works ( unless I'm miunderstanding what is actually contained in this collection)

As for part 2 - It's not really about having the 500GB. worth of art but is more about having that one or 2 pieces that you need for a particular concept that you know is out there but can not find in a decent quality ( HDD space is not as expensive as it used to be so having 500GB. stored in order to ensure you have a couple files you need is not unrealistic at this point) - rather than having to spend hours upon hours trying to find it when needed only to wind up either abandoning the concept or spending even more hours to reproduce from lower quality work that is available and still winding up with something that is just not as good as the original work or paying a certain person hundreds of dollars to have them simply print off a file they had no part in creating because they happened to gain access to it when it was available or having to pay to gain access to the file from someone that has placed them on a internet site that only allows download if you pay an annual fee to them..

I'm not a business, but I'm known to help out.  I archive a ton of arcade art, sometimes I used to help people make custom art for their cabs but mostly I'm a data hoarder.  I'm not gonna beg and I'm not going to try and make a buck off of it. If you send it to me, I'll gladly pass it along to the next person you want after I dump the data to my NAS.

I think JDFan makes some good points. I’d add that I think the fear of others capitalizing on artwork that isn’t readily available to this community is, to an extent, a reality of what’s already happening, not a future situation to be prevented.

To make sure that the artwork doesn’t fall in the wrong hands, maybe select a well-known forum member, take a poll to see if the community agrees that he/she would be trustworthy, and sent it to that person.

Let’s allow those that choose to purchase, purchase, and those who want to diy, let them choose that, too.

Is this guy seriously showing up with an archive of stolen artwork and then acting like it's up to him to determine worthy recipients?

Hey Dervacumen! Good to hear from you!

I agree, don't make it public and don't give it to people out to solely make a buck on having the art. I think sharing with responsible members in the community is the way to go, and I think that was the goal the first time this art was shared.

I suggest instead of a library website or hard drive share, which was a long drawn out process with a lot of coordination, just put it up on a private dropbox account. It looks like 1tb of storage is $10 a month. Those in the community interested can pay for 1 month worth of dropbox, and they will get added to the list of people on the share list. The dropbox will stay live until nobody is left who is interested in it. So 24 people interested all pay $10, the dropbox stays alive for 2 years and those 24 people can download whatever art they want in that timeframe. If someone comes in at a later point and wants in, then the dropbox stays alive for another month for every new person interested.

IF you do a year at a time - It's only $99 per year ( instead of $120) !

Lots of options, folks. I would certainly chip in 5 bucks for a one month dropbox subscription. We'd need to make sure that the download limit isn't capped, though.

Yeah looks like Dropbox is not a very good option

Quote
Free accounts are limited to 20GB of bandwidth per day, while Pro and Business accounts are allowed up to 200GB per day

So even a paid account would be limited to 200GB of bandwidth (either upload or download ) so would take several days to upload originally and then if just one person tries to download the entire thing it would block everyone else out for 3 days !

Quick research on google drive suggests that you can share with at least 100 ppl, there is not particular bandwidth limit, but there is an invisible access limit, something like if the file is downloaded by more than 30 users in a day download, they will make you wait 24 hours before it is available again, as to protect against piracy.

Someone can confirm this, but I think this would be perfectly reasonable to share this art among a handful of community members.

Honestly I’d be annoyed if this was shared with the Johnny-come-lately’s who registered here less than a year ago and has contributed diddly + squat to the forum. No offence, but asking for high profile free stuff without really putting in the time seems crappy to people who are established members for years.

Lots of options, folks. I would certainly chip in 5 bucks for a one month dropbox subscription. We'd need to make sure that the download limit isn't capped, though.
Honestly I’d be annoyed if this was shared with the Johnny-come-lately’s who registered here less than a year ago and has contributed diddly + squat to the forum. No offence, but asking for high profile free stuff without really putting in the time seems crappy to people who are established members for years.

Lots of good suggestions here, and very cool to hear from some old names and good friends.
I will look in to Google drive capacity limits and and a Dropbox account and a couple other things, but I just do not have a lot of time to administer the hosting duties. I do not want anyone to pay for access. I want to be more involved but life said to me "GAME OVER...PLAY AGAIN"....  but "I got a pocket full of quarters and I'm heading to the arcade..."

Good luck with round two!!

I agree with your sentiment about access, but there is a difference between chipping in to help and paying for access. Don't worry about shelling out for an account by yourself if we are willing to help shoulder that cost as a community.

Why not use a torrrent that isn't public?  It accomplishes the same thing as dropbox/google but without any cost.

Isn’t that putting a lot of bandwidth demand on a small handful of seeders? 500gb is a lot to ask a handful of people to perpetually share.

IF you do it on a private tracker and require those that download it attempt to upload at least as much as they download it would even itself out after some time since everyone would be uploading at the same time they are downloading (which is what the torrent protocol is designed for) so as long as everyone stayed seeding until they at least reached a 1:1 ratio or more. ( Not sure about others but my Internet provider gives me much faster downloads than uploads o I have to stay seeding for quite awhile to get the ratio up but eventually it gets there ( Have SPectrum's 100Mbs service and usually get 90 - 100Mbs Down and 10 - 15Mbs upload)

Centruylink 55mb service, but that is honestly pretty much a lie I pay for. This is a good right now:

I see 500gb is a lot to maintain. I get 4mb upload, but if I dedicate that much bandwidth, my internet is rendered useless. Most I could probably shell out reliably is 1mb. At that rate, I would need to seed this for 50 days to get to the equivalent of just one user, and that is only if there are people downloading at my max capacity around the clock. I would rather just pony up $10 and feel good I would be doing my part to share with more of the community.

Know the feeling - up until a few months ago had U-verse 18Mbs service and was lucky to actually maintain anything over 10Mbs - and it had a whopping 1.5Mbs upload rate so had to limit my upload bandwidth to about .75 Mbs or downloads would come to a crawl since the upload bandwidth couldn't maintain the connections used for the download speed.
