So I have this 500G hard drive with artwork...
« on: February 15, 2018, 10:19:07 pm »
Long time since I've been here. Man, things have evolved.
Anyway, I have been out of the hobby for a long time now, but at one point several of us mailed around a hard drive and made copies of the artwork from one of the sites that stopped hosting it. Been so long I can't recall...
But anyway, I have this drive full of artwork that I need to get to the right place. Anyone know who I should contact? It may be so widely distributed now that it's unimportant. I don't know.
Any guidance? And long live and love BYOAC. Still have two machines up and operating! About to pass one down to the next generation. I hope it lives on.

Possibly from "the Arcade Art Library" - would be nice if it is since that site vanished a couple years ago along with the artwork.  :dunno

You wanna throw it on a torrent site for a bit?
I'm sure more than a few of us would be ok with seeding for a bit.
Not me. My torrent server is full of porn.

I have only a couple concerns, but I want to know what the general community feels about it now. Here are my concerns:

1. I want to support those who are supporting the hobby. To me, that is #1. Period. Period. If there are reputable businesses out there that are going above and beyond, I would rather support them.

2. I am not sure if this is all in the public domain now, and I don't have the time to sort it out. If it's in the public domain, what's the issue? Why would anyone even care to get a whole drive of this stuff? Unless you're rolling off massive amounts of prints, it matters none. And you probably can't do as well a job as the others. And I want to protect their capital investments.

I am ready to hear any voice via PM. I really love this hobby. It gave a lot to me. I do not and will not be the one to screw it up for those who are honestly invested. If you're a printer wanting to break into a new space, I am not your guy. But best of luck.

Derv

BTW, I'm really crushed for time ATM but I will have time this weekend to really consider all the option and thanks for offering them!

I also share these concerns, which is why I would not put it up on a torrent site. I'd just share it to folks that are active contributing members and not looking to make a fast buck off the community.

Personally I'd like it for a database of reference material for artwork that I create. I've never and will never plagiarized a fellow artist's works, and quite honestly getting into the printing game is a nightmare both financially and temporally. Been there, done that, no thanks.

Not knowing exactly what the artwork is that you have makes it hard to really say if those concerns are legitimate or not. Since you mention in your original post :
Quote
at one point several of us mailed around a hard drive and made copies of the artwork from one of the sites that stopped hosting it. Been so long I can't recall...
It would seem that at least at some point a few years ago there was enough concern that those files would be lost to those building projects that could use them without having to pay someone that was just trying to profit off of art that someone else had originally designed ( ie. those like you mention that are just trying to print them to make a profit from them - since others do not have access to them so they could print them without paying extra fees. ) It would seem that making them available again would only help the community by getting them out there for everyone to have access to, so there is no incentive to pay someone that happens to have a copy of it - Since evidentally those in the community years back that participated in the mailing originally have either dissapeared or lost the copy of them that they had made in order to preserve access to them as they do not seem to be readily available unless I am mistaken ( SO it seems their fears of the loss of access has already happened at some point )

Personnally I would think having them available for everyone to use in their projects could only help the community as it would help keep others from charging to gain access to them - Figure it is much easier for those that just want to profit off the work to do so if only they have access to the work rather than being able to download them and then have them printed locally.

Figure at this point the original artists are not receiving any compensation for the work whether the files are available or not.  IF the original artists were still around and were selling the work or at least getting a percentage of any use - I could see not making them available or having a single source of availability that was compensating the original artist. But that is not the case with thesse works ( unless I'm miunderstanding what is actually contained in this collection)

As for part 2 - It's not really about having the 500GB. worth of art but is more about having that one or 2 pieces that you need for a particular concept that you know is out there but can not find in a decent quality ( HDD space is not as expensive as it used to be so having 500GB. stored in order to ensure you have a couple files you need is not unrealistic at this point) - rather than having to spend hours upon hours trying to find it when needed only to wind up either abandoning the concept or spending even more hours to reproduce from lower quality work that is available and still winding up with something that is just not as good as the original work or paying a certain person hundreds of dollars to have them simply print off a file they had no part in creating because they happened to gain access to it when it was available or having to pay to gain access to the file from someone that has placed them on a internet site that only allows download if you pay an annual fee to them..

I'm not a business, but I'm known to help out.  I archive a ton of arcade art, sometimes I used to help people make custom art for their cabs but mostly I'm a data hoarder.  I'm not gonna beg and I'm not going to try and make a buck off of it. If you send it to me, I'll gladly pass it along to the next person you want after I dump the data to my NAS.

I think JDFan makes some good points. I’d add that I think the fear of others capitalizing on artwork that isn’t readily available to this community is, to an extent, a reality of what’s already happening, not a future situation to be prevented.

To make sure that the artwork doesn’t fall in the wrong hands, maybe select a well-known forum member, take a poll to see if the community agrees that he/she would be trustworthy, and sent it to that person.

Let’s allow those that choose to purchase, purchase, and those who want to diy, let them choose that, too.

Is this guy seriously showing up with an archive of stolen artwork and then acting like it's up to him to determine worthy recipients?

Hey Dervacumen! Good to hear from you!

I agree, don't make it public and don't give it to people out to solely make a buck on having the art. I think sharing with responsible members in the community is the way to go, and I think that was the goal the first time this art was shared.

I suggest instead of a library website or hard drive share, which was a long drawn out process with a lot of coordination, just put it up on a private dropbox account. It looks like 1tb of storage is $10 a month. Those in the community interested can pay for 1 month worth of dropbox, and they will get added to the list of people on the share list. The dropbox will stay live until nobody is left who is interested in it. So 24 people interested all pay $10, the dropbox stays alive for 2 years and those 24 people can download whatever art they want in that timeframe. If someone comes in at a later point and wants in, then the dropbox stays alive for another month for every new person interested.

IF you do a year at a time - It's only $99 per year ( instead of $120) !

Lots of options, folks. I would certainly chip in 5 bucks for a one month dropbox subscription. We'd need to make sure that the download limit isn't capped, though.

Yeah looks like Dropbox is not a very good option

Quote
Free accounts are limited to 20GB of bandwidth per day, while Pro and Business accounts are allowed up to 200GB per day

So even a paid account would be limited to 200GB of bandwidth (either upload or download ) so would take several days to upload originally and then if just one person tries to download the entire thing it would block everyone else out for 3 days !

Quick research on google drive suggests that you can share with at least 100 ppl, there is not particular bandwidth limit, but there is an invisible access limit, something like if the file is downloaded by more than 30 users in a day download, they will make you wait 24 hours before it is available again, as to protect against piracy.

Someone can confirm this, but I think this would be perfectly reasonable to share this art among a handful of community members.

Honestly I’d be annoyed if this was shared with the Johnny-come-lately’s who registered here less than a year ago and has contributed diddly + squat to the forum. No offence, but asking for high profile free stuff without really putting in the time seems crappy to people who are established members for years.

Lots of options, folks. I would certainly chip in 5 bucks for a one month dropbox subscription. We'd need to make sure that the download limit isn't capped, though.
Honestly I’d be annoyed if this was shared with the Johnny-come-lately’s who registered here less than a year ago and has contributed diddly + squat to the forum. No offence, but asking for high profile free stuff without really putting in the time seems crappy to people who are established members for years.

Lots of good suggestions here, and very cool to hear from some old names and good friends.
I will look in to Google drive capacity limits and and a Dropbox account and a couple other things, but I just do not have a lot of time to administer the hosting duties. I do not want anyone to pay for access. I want to be more involved but life said to me "GAME OVER...PLAY AGAIN"....  but "I got a pocket full of quarters and I'm heading to the arcade..."

Good luck with round two!!

I agree with your sentiment about access, but there is a difference between chipping in to help and paying for access. Don't worry about shelling out for an account by yourself if we are willing to help shoulder that cost as a community.

Why not use a torrrent that isn't public?  It accomplishes the same thing as dropbox/google but without any cost.

Isn’t that putting a lot of bandwidth demand on a small handful of seeders? 500gb is a lot to ask a handful of people to perpetually share.

IF you do it on a private tracker and require those that download it attempt to upload at least as much as they download it would even itself out after some time since everyone would be uploading at the same time they are downloading (which is what the torrent protocol is designed for) so as long as everyone stayed seeding until they at least reached a 1:1 ratio or more. ( Not sure about others but my Internet provider gives me much faster downloads than uploads o I have to stay seeding for quite awhile to get the ratio up but eventually it gets there ( Have SPectrum's 100Mbs service and usually get 90 - 100Mbs Down and 10 - 15Mbs upload)

Centruylink 55mb service, but that is honestly pretty much a lie I pay for. This is a good right now:

I see 500gb is a lot to maintain. I get 4mb upload, but if I dedicate that much bandwidth, my internet is rendered useless. Most I could probably shell out reliably is 1mb. At that rate, I would need to seed this for 50 days to get to the equivalent of just one user, and that is only if there are people downloading at my max capacity around the clock. I would rather just pony up $10 and feel good I would be doing my part to share with more of the community.

Know the feeling - up until a few months ago had U-verse 18Mbs service and was lucky to actually maintain anything over 10Mbs - and it had a whopping 1.5Mbs upload rate so had to limit my upload bandwidth to about .75 Mbs or downloads would come to a crawl since the upload bandwidth couldn't maintain the connections used for the download speed.

I have 500gb spare in my one drive I can give you access to? I can leave it there for a bit to give guys here a chance to download it.  Maybe zip it to 100mb chunks to make it manageable

Yep, I'm thinking the same thing.

Does anyone else still have this drive from the original recipients? We might be able to find someone else willing to put something up on a cloud drive.

Ignorant of this thread, I started a new thread with my ideas on how we can handle archiving of artwork:

Hopefully Dervacumen returns someday. That hard drive is a perfect candidate for the vault. I'll send him a PM. :dunno

Maybe we could set up a list and have each person pay to ship it to the next person after they clone the drive ( say give each person 3 days or so to clone it and get it out to the next person) that way the couple drives could make the rounds ( figure you send them to a couple people and then they clone them to a new hdd when they get it and repackage and send to the next person ( and post the tracking number here when sent so everyone can keep track of where they are and about how far down the list they are - so if needed they can swap positions if going on vacation around the time it's coming their way to keep it from sitting too long.) - then when the next person gets it they do the same ( figure they should fit in a small flat rate box so the cost wouldn't be very much in return for getting a chance to clone it.)

I'd love a copy of it too, but might cost a bit and take too long for the drive to come to Thailand.

Can you make a torrent out of the drive? It would be much easier. There is no need to publicise the torrent, just put a link/torrent file with this thread - or we could even limit that to just people that PM asking for it.

I also have a very large collection of arcade art buried in my 4.5 TB NAS. But My NAS is turned off as I can't find a replacement 1.5 GB hard drive for the one that has failed (nobody seems to sell them anymore). I don't want to turn it on and risk another drive failing until I have a new NAS to replace it.

Honestly, mailing a hard drive around is so 20th Century. It takes a long time, costs a lot of money, and puts all that valuable data at significant risk of loss.

All said, I'd rather "preserve" this 500GB drive + my own artwork data by putting it into a torrent. That way my artwork will be "backed up" by all you wonderful people downloading it.

Cheers, Zeb :D

Here's a thought... I buy new NAS, add my restored artwork data + this 500GB drive + anything else that comes along... and introduce a torrent (or small series of torrents, based on subject/purpose/media lines, to break up the chunk of data a bit). My NAS will always* be on. I'll keep permanently seeding from my NAS as long as necessary/possible. I have fibre-optic to the house, uncapped with a theoretical 30mbps from that (for downloading, not sure what the actual upload speed is.

Or someone else like malenko or yo1dog sets up something similar, I buy my new NAS anyway (because I want to regardless), download and add +1 to the permanent seeds available. Once we have 2-4 seeds with decent bandwidth it will be much easier for others to download as well.

* "always" as in almost always on of course. I do/will run the NAS on a UPS, but sometimes sheet happens or you need to update something.

Anyway would love to help and find out when torrent is available. I'd be happy to share. Look forward to it!

Mine were playing arcade games by the time they could sit on the stool  (actually, I'd lift them in). Now my 15yo is about to start an internship/work experience stint with a computer games/animation group and is talking about finding a career doing character art and other art for computer games.

They grow up so quick... soon I'll be getting her to design my marquees for me lol.

Definitely more than 2.
It's just kinda ---smurfy--- to see people come in a leech the free stuff without contributing to the site. Especially these new members that came specifically for this... first post: "hey can I have your free stuff?". Gimme a break.

Yeah yo1dog, keep mooching the free----steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

I mean, as outlined in my vault post, my objective is get the artwork archived somewhere safe to preserve it for future community members and to make it accessible to everyone in the community... while paying for it out of my own pocket. Not sure how that would be considered mooching. :dunno

Definitely more than 2.

Yea they (we? not sure if I meet your abstract standards or not) should know better than to ask to be included in the sharing of arcade-related assets on a forum dedicated to the sharing of all things arcade related. ::)

I understand this is different because it is a physical drive that has to be mailed around, and thus it does make sense to prioritize certain community members first. However,  I don't see anything inherently wrong with asking "Can I have some of that free cake, too?" I mean, sure, if some random guy walked into your picnic party and asked if he could have some of the cake, that would be annoying and you would probably tell him "No. This cake is only for my friends." You can easily say the same thing here. If you get the drive and you don't want to mail it to someone because you don't think they are worthy, then just don't.

However, it would be pretty silly to tell your friend not to share their cake with someone because you don't think they should. It's their cake. They want to share it. Telling someone not to mail the drive to someone else because you don't think they are worthy comes across as elitist and selfish.

Regardless, what if you had an unlimited amount cake? I would yell "Hey everyone! Free cake!" and share with everyone. Would you do the same or would you still say it was for you and your friends only? If we get the artwork online and accessible, there is unlimited cake for everyone. Why would anyone want to horde it?

I’m not saying to not share with these newly joined members.
Please re-read my post carefully. Here, I’ve bolded the key sentence for easier comprehension:

Look at these new/low post members come out of the woodwork for the free arts. I really hope this stuff is shared to contributing members first, as a priority, before the johnny-come-lately's get a crack of them.
Where in this am I saying to not share with them at all? Please, feel free to write another long-winded analogy that isn’t really accurate to the discussion.

It's true that you never said we shouldn't share with newly joined members, and after rereading your first comment again, I can see that you did imply that the new members should get access eventually.

However, you did make it clear that you adamantly disapprove of newly joined members simply asking to have it shared with them by describing the act as "mooching", "---smurfy---", and being a "leech". Given your aversion to new members even asking, I extrapolated that you did not want to share with them at all. I don't think this assumption was a complete non sequitur.

"Look at all these moochers asking for some of our pancakes. How ---smurfy--- is that."
"Of course we should share our pancakes with them! I never said we shouldn't. Why would you think I don't want to share with them?"

Oh wait that's waffles not pancakes !

I can see attempting to prioritize if the drive is being mailed around - but if posting a torrent the more you share with the faster everyone gets it as long as everyone continues to seed the files after they download, so sharing might actually get you the files faster !
Also it's not like someone that wants to get the files free and print it for a project was going to hire someone to create the artwork for them - so doubt it will cost anyone any commission work ( and having it out there for those that want to cut and paste clip art or unlicensed images grabbed off the net will keep them from e-mailing asking why the artwork is so expensive. )  and it might just bring some innovation to the forum from members that will use them in actual builds that they post here but not much $$$ :dunno

I have little patience for people, especially millennial's, who feel entitled to receiving things without putting in a contribution. I don't know if you (or these fly-by members that you're so quick to defend) are actually a millennial, but you sure seem like one.

One of those standards finds it annoying that some passer-by's can randomly join this site to receive free stuff without contributing anything to the community.

I'm not an elitist and not into making a "walled garden" out of this resource, for the exclusive pleasure of a select few.

BUT

If we do a torrent, which really is the best way, then more is better. But it has to be quality "more", not just fly-by-nighters who arrive, suck down all the data then p!ss off. People need to keep *seeding* the thing so that as many people as possible can get a bite of the cherry, a fair shake, etc.

So, by that standard alone, I would say that to participate in the torrent you must pass by a certain bar or standard, which would exclude members who haven't participated in the forum and who may be assumed to have just joined to get free stuff, then to disappear and never be seen again. If a regular member doesn't re-seed then we can at least name-and-shame them into complying. We have no such leverage on fly-by-nighters.

That's it, I'm off to install Groovymame on my vertical cab and go grab some metal control panels I'm getting made for me at a metal shop.

I haven't seen it myself, been assuming about the size of a 3.5" HDD in a case, around the size of a book.

I'd be happy to host the torrent initially from here if the drive comes to me, or just use it to join the torrent. Doing a combo of starting a torrent and continuing to mail the drive about might be the way to go, and each person that gets the drive can join the torrent at 100% and seed immediately.

You seem to be a little upset over there. I think you need to calm down a bit. Take a couple deep breaths. Eat some pancakes.

I can be as snarky as I damn well please.

I never said you couldn't. I was just demonstrating how childish and immature it is. :)

I have little patience for people, especially millennial's, who feel entitled to receiving things without putting in a contribution.

I never said anyone was entitled to anything; Just that sharing is nice. If you are going to build straw men, try not to be so cliche about it.

I don't know if you (or these fly-by members that you're so quick to defend) are actually a millennial, but you sure seem like one.

I'm not. Though, I am not sure what generation I or anyone else was born in has to do with anything.

Also, do you really think labeling me or things I say as elitist is an insult? Haaaa! That's a badge I carry, son, it's comes with being an artist with having a high-level of standards.

Well, pop, it sounds like you are a ton of fun at parties. "Have you met Bob? You'll love him. He's very elitist." Plenty of people have a high-level of standards without being egotistical. But, you hold on to that badge if it's really that important to your self image.

One of those standards finds it annoying that some passer-by's can randomly join this site to receive free stuff without contributing anything to the community.

You seem to have major qualms with the idea of people freely giving to each other without expecting something in return. You are "annoyed" by it. You seem to expect that everyone fulfill your completely subjective and abstract standards before they should be given anything by anyone.

I guess the only comprehensible point you are making is you don't like freeloaders and moochers. You seem to qualify this as any receiving participate in the freely shared resources of a community. But, I mean, there are probably thousands of people every day who read though these forums and "mooch" information, cabinet plans, ideas, etc. for free without contributing anything back. In fact, oh my god, there are 36 guests mooching off the main forum right now! They didn't even register an account! Maybe you would suggest the forums be closed to unregistered members? Maybe some of the subforums should be locked until users prove themselves productive enough?

Imagine if Wikipedia was run this way. "Sorry, you have read 100 pages but you have only written 10. You must write 10 more pages or pay $4.99 before you can continue."

Oh multi-quotes.   ::)

You seem to be a little upset over there. I think you need to calm down a bit. Take a couple deep breaths. Eat some pancakes.
LOL my disposition is none of your business, and contribution is all part of the sharing you're so concerned about. If you're not contributing, you're not helping the community, plain and simple.

Well, pop, it sounds like you are a ton of fun at parties. "Have you met Bob? You'll love him. He's very elitist." Plenty of people have a high-level of standards without being egotistical. But, you hold on to that badge if it's really that important to your self image.
Hehe, ask the guys here who's met me in person, they can tell you I am indeed awesome at parties. You on the other hand sound social challenged, if that's how you introduce people.  Who would actually introduce someone like that?? That's just weird, man.

You seem to have major qualms with the idea of people freely giving to each other without expecting something in return. You are "annoyed" by it. You seem to expect that everyone fulfill your completely subjective and abstract standards before they should be given anything by anyone.
Subjective and abstract standards... and yet you're doing the same?  Pot meet kettle.

But are those 36 guests registering an account for the sheer intention of receiving an archive of rare data that can easily be flipped into a business venture?

Keep playing that White Knight card there, buddy. As far as I'm concerned, a 9-year member with 250 posts is no different than a 2 day member with 1 post.

Look, we’re veering away from my main point with this pointless argument.

It’s not about people not having access to this, it’s about giving first access to the long standing members who have spent hours on this site, helping people, developing relationships and overall contributing to this hobby.

For the record, an elitist by definition is someone who believes that a society or system should be led by an elite. Sending this to Mal first was the right call, and however he wants to handle this you can be sure it’ll be in the best interest for the site and hobby. So I’m happy there.

As for further debate of personality clashes, I’d rather do that in another thread or in person. yo1dog, feel free to come to Zapcon and discuss this in person over a bottle of bourbon with me. You will see I’m not such a bad person, and my “ego” stems from life lessons, confidence and self-awareness.

I'll avoid using "multi-quotes" if you don't like them.

I'm sure you are a fine guy (no sarcasm). I've never met you so I wouldn't know. I've just never met anyone I've liked who described themselves as an elitist. "Snob" is a synonym and what I think of when I hear the word. It's very probable we have different interpretations of the word. Hence why my fictional introduction of Bob sounded "socially challenged". Replace "elitist" with "snob" and that introduction doesn't make sense. Replace it  with "funny" or "nice" and it sounds pretty standard.

I haven't set any standards that I believe members should be held by to dictate their worthiness to be shared with. I'm not sure how you think I being hypocritical.

Regarding the 36 guests, the question I was trying to frame was: What is the difference between the 3-4 newly created members "mooching" artwork on this topic and those 36 guests who are "mooching" other resources from this forum? What's the difference between someone's first post being "Can you help me find this artwork?" and "Can you help me find a good CRT to buy?" or "Can you help me with my control panel build?"? When a guest reads through a detailed tutorial that took the author hours to write and put together, are they not "mooching" without contributing? I am honestly curious about your distinctions.

I am not sure what "White Knight card" I am playing or what that refers to. I've simply stated that I think it's OK to share freely with the community if you want to and that I disagree with your notion of only sharing with those who you have deemed have contributed enough. If you don't want to give to a particular member, I absolutely understand that. I don't understand why you would be apposed to other people giving to that member.

See, your last sentence comes off pretty egotistical. Clearly, I have not met your standards of a contributing member and am undeserving. But, why should I or anyone else care about your opinion of status? Out of curiosity, if you owned the hard drive, how many years and posts would you require before sharing with someone?

Edit:  Just saw your reply. I agree. I'll buy the bourbon! ;)

Lol, this is fun.

Makes me want to go into a room full of people and yell "FREE MONEY" while tossing a wad of $1 bills into the middle, just so I can stand back and watch so-called civilised people tear and scratch at each other while screaming "Mine! Mine!" over spare change. That'd be worth the $50 or so it would cost  :laugh2:

Bringing things that are aren't quite free, guess how much these control panel blanks (1 set = 2 pieces, top and bottom) + the 4 Z brackets for my planned galaga/MsPac style cocktail cabinet cost me? I just picked them up from the metal shop.

The answer is about $12 for the lot.

I loved getting stuff don cheep when I was living over seas. I used to be able to get back lite Marquees printer for like $12 in Nepal. They looked good to.

Yeah. They were probably made by children forced into labor against their will. I would feel really good about that too. ::)

Nepal is notorious for forcing kids into labor with terrible working conditions. My company looked into purchasing some products from a factory in Nepal. The "factory" had electricity for 8 hours a day and children worked with power saws in a room with a dirt floor. We took a hard pass on that one.

Fortunately Thailand is a lot different to Nepal. No special evidence of kids forced to work here.

Getting these done involves chatting with them a bit first so they get to know me. They'll want to know where I'm from, how many wives I've got, where they are, how long I've been in Thailand, how many kids, and to have a discussion about the weather in detail before getting down to talking about my project and the job at hand.

I just wonder how they can earn enough to even share a bottle of local rice whiskey at the end of the day.

Here's one of the guys at work on my panels:

best thing you can do with anything like this is throw it on archive.org, post a link and be done with it.  regardless of if the stuff is elsewhere and in other collections, it's an interesting piece of history in it's own right at this point.

thought we'd kinda got to the stage where most people had realised that the need to keep things safe and accessible for future generations is more important than 'who has earned the right to access whatever'

look at the principals the scene around you are built upon

take a leaf out of Jason Scott's book
https://twitter.com/textfiles

he's the archive.org guy who deals with emulation related preservation for them, see the enthusiasm he has for this kind of thing.

Damn right. Even so, don't be naive and think that mere humans are past being petty and selfish, however disappointing it is when it comes out :D  I am still an optimist and an idealist, but the older and wiser I get the more disillusioned I become. You've got to laugh about it sometimes otherwise it'll eat you up and you lose the faith.

I also think archive.org would be a good place for the drive to finish it's journey. However, before it gets there, let's start a torrent with it so that we can begin archiving it right now on our hard drives.

Centralised repositories are great until they disappear, go broke, burn down, close etc. It has happened time and time again to arcade gaming (eg that Arcade Art site) to ancient history (eg Great Library of Alexandria). Initially, the drive should go to a few of us able to seed the torrent until it gets going. Then let everyone in, more the merrier for all of us. The best arcade archives are distributed about the planet on our hard drives and in the cloud.

Jesus H Christ, you guys are daft.

I wasn't arguing 'who has the right to access' what.  I was arguing the people who have been around here for a long time, should have first dibs.

Malenko is the right man to have this sent to first. He's been around here for a long time, has been contributing, helping out people and continues to push the boundaries.

Soooooo the drive showed up, you kids are gonna be disappointed with the contents. Its mostly raw scans, and if you exclude the emumovies folder of preview vids, its about 320GBs.

I have about 3 or 4 spare drives that I can dupe this drive to. I'll make sure the drives I have work and then PM a few ppl for addresses.  If *anyone* PMs me asking for a copy before I'm ready you'll be on the "do not send to list"

Ideally I'd like to send 1 to each time zone at minimum. I will be sending them to the more.... tenured members, it just seem to be more likely to actually get the drives passed along and not disappear into the ether. I'll also whip together a torrent, it just seems the most efficient way to get the files out to everyone (especially without the risk of it vanishing)

That is exactly what I have. I too was one of the original participants when we sent that original drive around the world duplicating it.
I recall at the time we were all trying to keep it out of the public domain. Not for selfish reasons, but to give someone a chance to host the files online and use a pay-per-download or some other monitization in order to cover the hosting fees. I guess that didn't go as planned.

here is proof of that very sample file you posted which many people have had access for years:

actual file - https://www.sendspace.com/file/m5p0pr

Unless what you have on that HDD is different... I know many of the Bally/Pac/Cinematronics stuff was removed due to copyright issues. I always wanted a backup of the entire site on an external HDD, I'm just not in the printing business & most placed like mamemarquees / gameongraphix, rich @ thisoldgame, escapepod etc etc etc have had these files for years, and most of which they have cleaned / revectorized / retraced most of the available files. It's still neat to go through and see all the artwork though. It's now very affordable to place these on an SD card or two at this point for 20-30$ it's crazy you can have them on a keychain, that wasn't the case when these files were first available.

Its mostly raw scans.

Malenko, Are there any Defender CPO scans in there (or, even better, a vector)? I am currently working on vectorizing it to use on my cab. The vectorized ones on vectorlib are not very accurate and the "scans"/rasters available from Arcade Artwork seem to be cleaned up in a way that makes then not look right. Maybe? Not sure. Regardless, another scan would be great to compare to!

I attached the progress I have made so far.

Lol.

The answer is that it seems unlikely that "simple guys" like us will. We will be very low on the list (if on the list at all). But, it is being distributed to some of the long time active members to prevent it from being lost forever which is fantastic. Hopefully one day the contents will be available to the community.

I have detailed a purposed solution, but in the mean time we must wait for our forum overlords to decide our fate. ;) People are busy. Be patient.

Not a bad idea for someone that has had it by then - to make a few copies to bring with them for attendees that want a copy of it !  (figure they could reimburse for the HDD and buy the person bringing it a couple beers for their time  :dunno

I sent the original drive off, but I still have all the files so I can make additional drives.  The reason I sent the drive off to a moderator of these forums was to ensure the trail didn't end at stop #2.  I have nothing against newer members getting the art, I just want to be sure it gets into the hands of people I know will be sure to pass it along and not just sit on the drive. I am still going to make a few more drives and send them out, but my first objective was to get the original one back out into the rotation.

I probably will go through and pair down the art (there's a ton of dupes) for a separate torrent file.

Ok, throwing this out for the group -

The drive is a bare SATA drive. So, in order to use it, you need to either crack your computer open or get/buy a SATA to USB adapter. Also, I need to find a anti-static bag to put it in before ship it.

I have a spare 500 GB portable USB drive I’d be willing to donate to the cause to make life easier for everyone. It’d be simply plug and play instead of having to finagle other options. It’s also more “shockproof” than the current option.

So what sez you peeps? Send out the USB drive to Opt2Not, or stick with the original?

Either way is fine by me. I have a SATA to USB adapter anyways so it’s no hassle. But if you want to send me the USB drive, that’s fine too.

SATA has faster bus speed, so you can download it quicker, only hassle is you have to open up a computer case and find spare SATA data & power connectors

So would you like approx 2 million 8" flippy disks or would you like about 1.5 million Single sided 5.25"  we could possibly also put it back onto paper tape for you.
Seriously, we have people working at our place who were working with paper tape machines about 40 years ago, I'm sure they could do something for you, although it would probably be enough to get to the moon and back a few times :)

This is a random shot in the dark, but I'm in the process of doing a Rampage themed bartop and at my wits end... is there any chance that this magic artwork drive has a high quality scan/photo of the original Rampage bezel?  I'm in the process of vector tracing out the bezel in order to have the individual elements isolated to move them around, but I'm not finding any great scans of the bezel artwork so I'm having to work from a patchwork of the best shots I could find on the net all stitched together... technically it will work but I'm positive that I'm losing quite a bit of detail working from my current source materials.  I've already got the marquee and control panel dialed in, the bezel is the last thing I need to finish up before I go to print.  I'd be happy to contribute the resulting vector files to the cause.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

I'll see what I can do ftp-wise once I finish backing up the old NAS, about 4TB worth so it takes a good while even over a LAN connection, and then installing the new. Started backup process today. A reasonable chunk of this is arcade (and arcade-art) related stuff from last decade or so, at least some of which would be very difficult to find now (eg the hosting sites no longer exist) or just impossible (eg my own separately sourced or original stuff).

New NAS will have close to 30TB capacity even after RAID redundancy (4x10TB drives), so a lot more room to grow there.

Sweet, glad it still works. LOL

I was worried about shipping this mechanical drive around.

So far, I'm enjoying what's on there. I'm fine with it being raw scans since I can quickly and accurately vectorize things myself, (no auto-trace!) and it's really cool to see a bunch of the artwork at a high resolution.
I have this wacky idea of creating clean vectorized files of every piece of art on the drive, but that will probably take a lifetime!  :lol

Yep it's would take quite awhile to do. Sent a second PM out and waiting for a response to see if they are still wanting it - after that if they don't ( or already have it from someone else ) I'll probably just post here and let the first responder get it sent to them since I'd rather get it to someone and keep it moving.

So if by this time tomorrow I haven't got it in the mail I'll post here and take the first responder ( so those interested in getting it still check back around this time tomorrow. !! )

Yep - said he didn't want it so looked like Vigo was next - It's on it's way to him as of 2 this afternoon and should arrive there on Saturday.

As far as I know it's been to You - Opt - Me - Surles declined - and headed toward Vigo.

I think Yots got it from Malenko.  Mal was the first in line, right?

Hmmm, maybe we should keep a log, tracking where it goes. Just for fun. :)

That drive went to me then haruman then yots then etc ;)

I sent 4 other  drives out into the wild, members of other forums I frequent and other ppl I know. They are also supposed to be copied and sent forward.

Be great if it could be seeded as if love to have a browse through it but I'm in the UK so postage would be a killer.

Are there marquees on it? I'm missing a few that I'd like to get good copies of.

@Malenko I'm happy to host a torrent for a long time, but not to host an ftp site for people to pick-and-choose whatever marquee or whatever fiddly bits they want while having file access to my data storage, yet not contributing to hosting that data themselves

If I were to setup ftp access it would be strictly for you only, for uploading. In that case, isn't it easier to just setup a torrent? Then I (and everyone else) can download it easily from you without the whole FTP business.

Which means I'd have to setup FTP access to my new Synology NAS. Can't be too hard, it is designed to be remotely accessible, but I haven't done it before, so learning curves ahead to negotiate. I never bothered doing remote access for my old NAS, we mostly just used it within my local network. OTOH, this new Synology NAS seems much better optimised for remote access.  :blah:

Frankly, I'm impressed with it so far, and all I've been doing is setting up volumes and backing up about 4TB worth of files from my old NAS. Knowing Synology, setting up remote access is probably as simple as installing an app package and tweaking some settings.

If possible would like to roll in some other artwork files from other sources.

Will work out what I need to do next week, probably after our guests have gone.

Of course, if I had a copy of the drive then it would be even easier.

I don’t think this is the same. Most of the art on the drive is in scanned raw form.

most of the joymonkey stuff is the cleaned up version of whats on this drive, AFAIK. Also the drive has the movie SuperBad on it for some reason :p

I deleted the folder from my local storage after the fact.

How long does it take to dump the content of a drive and ship it to the next one? a day maybe.
Those drives were sent around as courtesy to help the community. When someone receives it, they should dump them and pass them along, not sit on them for 4 months, its just common sense.

I have a skid of NOS artwork that I am in the process of scanning everyday and around 50 cabinet to restore in my private collection.

You dont contribute much with your ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- comments

there's at least 4 copies of the drive floating around out there. I put the files on my NAS, and sent out 3 additional drives. If youre looking for a specific thing I can upload it somewhere.  The art on the drive is mostly raw scans, not ready to print edited source files.

I may not have posted a lot here, but yes I contribute a lot to the arcade community.

Yes, thats great thanks. I also gathered a fairly large database over the years. We already have been in touch multiple times on Pinside. Just sent you a message there, I am rarely on this forum.

So now out of the 12 posts here, your 31 posts on KLOV... the two biggest active arcade forums... you've got a post contribution of 43.  You're not a member of shumps. You're not a member of Neo-geo, you're not a member of Arcade-projects.  I haven't even checked jamma+ yet, though I'm going to bet you're not a member there as well.

One could say you're not active on any of the major arcade forums.  So what exactly have you contributed to the community? Because I don't know who the ---fudgesicle--- you are and never heard of your name on any of the major arcade forums, and I'm active on most of them.

Yes, thats great thanks. I also gathered a fairly large database over the years. We already have been in touch multiple times on Pinside. Just sent you a message there, I am rarely on this forum.
Thanks
So if you gathered a large database, why don't you share that to the community first, before demanding the free shizz and claiming you're an active contributing member of the arcade forum?

Someone was saying about paying for online storage in an earlier post.

I have 5tb of forever storage on one drive, it's on a MSDN license account so not my personal one. I'm happy to share the account details with a moderator here who can pick and choose who has access via sharing to other Microsoft accounts.

Option is there if storage is a limiting factor

So the whole point that I agreed with sending the drive to seasoned members was to keep the chances of the drive making the rounds high.  I dont mind uploading the files to someone else because them not sending the files to someone else doesnt break the chain like someone not mailing out the drive does.  Pat's a good dude, he shared some art with me before on Pinside so Im currently FTPing all the files over to him. Im confident he'll share with others as well.

I think the next step might be to create a torrent and then we can all just seed the files for a while.

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I was able to get the files from Malenko, thanks!

After comparing it with my some of my other artwork banks that I collected or purchased over the years.
The content of the drive is EXACTLY the same as what's on the CoinOpArt website (http://www.coinopart.com/)

I purchased a hard drive with the entire CoinOpArt website content (directly from them) a year or 2 ago. After doing a full file compare, the only differences are dummy files "Thumbs.db" from my CoinOpArt bank. All files are matching 100%, ran a checksum too.

There is still a lot of good stuff on it, but I just wanted to let everyone know in case someone already have a subscription to CoinOpArt.
Hope this help!

That's a great idea!

Sorry to have been away for a while, busy building a pool and landscaping etc. I gave up holding my breath for this, so haven't been back to this thread for a few months to check where things were at. I see it hasn't gone terribly far yet.

Malenko, if you could be so wonderful as to put this up on a torrent I'll be very happy and thankful, will start downloading/seeding immediately. Hopefully we'll get at least a few people willing to consistently keep seeding it, and all can enjoy.

Cheers, Z.

To be fair, a 500gb hard drive, haphazardly packed and battered through the mail a number of times isn't a huge score.  :dunno

This is exactly what I expected to happen.

I'm not surprised at all, but I still don't know why Malenko or someone else didn't just start a torrent. It will always baffle me why people do/don't do simple things.

Creating the torrent is pretty easy, if anyone actually has the art and wants assistance/instructions on creating a torrent to upload it let me know.
