Possibly a Vanguard Resurrection
« on: January 27, 2018, 12:07:16 am »
Awhile back I bought a working Krazy Bowl for 50 bucks at a pawn shop.

It was in a Centuri cab and I want a Time Pilot so that would put me part way there since I happen to have a working Time Pilot PCB.

I decided to take the cab apart and template it so I could build another.

While taking it apart I found a tiny clue as to what this cab was born as. A small piece of the original artwork under one of the bolts.

It looks like it was a Vanguard according to my brief detective work.

So now I am planning on templating this cab, and then restoring it to its former glory as a Vanguard cab.

$50 for a working game?  I’d set it out on the back porch and play it whenever I went out there to take a piss.

It is one of those things that I hear about but never happens to me. I have a friend who lives in Watertown, WI. He found it for me. The pawn shop owner needed the space. My buddy offered to take it off his hands for free. They settled on 50 bucks. The only real issue is the screen rolls to the left after about an hour. If I jiggle one of the adjustment pots it stops. I will fix that while I have it out of the cab.

I am templating the cab so I can build both, and a Phoenix while I am at it. I also picked up a NOS Monroe joystick. I can't remember the last time I played Time Pilot out in the wild with the correct joystick. My local arcade has a really crappy joystick in their Time Pilot.

didn't notice the pic was out of focus.

side template is done.

Well I have made some progress. I have tracked down a vanguard PCB and control panel. I just have to see if I can make the right deal with the guy.

Otherwise, I have a friend who works in a shop that does custom metalwork for hot rods. He is going to look at the hacked up Krazy Bowl control panel and see if he has the time to tackle making some repro control panels for me. He just started there as a welder. He said his bosses are flexible and they allow some personal use of the shop.

I have cut the side panels for the Time Pilot scratch build. I am going to sand and stain them hopefully this weekend.

Has anyone here applied side art over a stained and polyurethaned surface? Any recommendations on what polyurethane to use?

Once I make some real progress I will split the Time Pilot scratch build into its own thread.

The Vanguard PCB and control panel were sold before I could even make an offer. I guess it is back to fabrication.

I found a KLOVer that is shipping me a Vanguard control panel. It has a couple extra holes I will need to fill. I will have it in my possession next week.

Now I need side art and CPO.

I also need a PCB. There is one on eBay, but i am hoping to score one cheaper through KLOV or Craigslist.

Well. I bought a Centuri CP that the guy said I could use for my Time Pilot scratch build, but I would have to fill some extra holes. He was right.

But....

I flipped it over and those extra holes are for Vanguard buttons.

Game on!

The CP is almost completely stripped.

When that is done I am handing it over to one of my friends. He is going to fix the extra holes for me.

On Friday I am turning my control panel over to a friend of mine to fix the extra holes.
I have someone working on the Vanguard side art for me. We will see how that turns out.
I am done measuring the Krazy Bowl cab. Hopefully I will have time to reassemble it this weekend.

It is slow going, but I have a lot on my plate right now. One big issue is that since I started this hobby my basement workshop has become overwhelmed with arcade stuff. I started building shelving to get organized and reclaim floor space. CRTs suck up space really fast without the proper shelving.

It is good to have friends Jennifer. You should try it.

Or maybe you could help me free up some time to learn those skills myself.

I have a friend in hospice care. I cook dinner for her family 3 days a week. On the weekends I am installing handicap friendly handrails, fixing their bad staircase, and working on their plumbing. That is also while taking time off from work to help her husband with driving her to the hospital multiple times a week so he doesn't lose his job.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I get by with a little help from my friends. I also offer whatever help I can when I can. That’s the fun of knowing how to do things.

Go buy/borrow a welder now.
This advice.
Calling me lame because I have friends who share in my hobby is wrong headed.

Sharing the work is fun for me. I get to tap skills I don't have, and in turn my friends get to enjoy an arcade that they don't have.

I do my gardening the same way. I live on 5 acres. I have a huge garden. Several of my friends help me maintain it. They can take their fill of fruits and vegetables. We work together.

I have a friend who is an auto mechanic. He helps me maintain my cars. He stores his 52 International in my barn in the wintertime. Nobody keeps score, but we all benefit.

If you want to do all of the work yourself that is great. You obviously have a wide and deep skill set. The work you have shown on this site is excellent.

Yots and the Beatles get it.

Exactly. I’m juggling three projects for ZapCon right now, one of which is a cabinet that belongs to a friend of mine. I’m restoring it for him because he doesn’t have the time, and he likes the way I do things. There’s totally nothing wrong with that. I have a skill set he doesn’t have, and he will benefit from the fruits of it. I have fun, and I get a little something out of it.

Hey Mike,

I have a spare unpopulated Phoenix CP that you can have.  I may have related brackets for a Centuri cab too, I need to check.  (Just pay for shipping).  Pics below.  The blank one on the top is not available, I used it in another project already.

I also have a Time Pilot paper bezel somewhere too.

Let me know...

Phoenix CP is on the way!

Edit:  Couldn't find the brackets, I know they are somewhere.  At the very least you will need the hinge to mount the CP.  I will check around this weekend.

Just saw this, looking forward to see updates!

I have a friend who lives in Watertown, WI. He found it for me.

Dude, I love that area of Wisconsin. Spent a lot of time in and around Watertown. If you haven't tried it already, next time you are there go to a truck stop across from the Johnson Creek outlet called the Pine Cone. Insanely cheap and awesome food.  Like full rack of ribs or steak dinner for $10. I travel to specifically go there for food.

Sweet. I will have to ask my friend about that next time I visit him. He is actually meeting me at the MGC.

Do you live in the area Vigo?

I live in the twin cities. Central and West Wisconsin is my stomping ground, lived there for a while and have family there. Grandparents used to live in Watertown, so I used to go every year to visit them. Now that they have passed, I still make trips through to eat at Pine Cone.
