Last week we took a family trip to Orlando and and ended up in Disney Springs (the Disney shopping area) Anyways, they have a ride/exhibit/tour whatever called VOID. Basically its a 4D VR experience where you are rebel troopers infiltrating a base disguised as storm troopers--I initially thought "here's a really fast way to burn $35 in 20 minutes" After I was done--I would not have hesitated to do it again--I thought it was amazing! They kit you up with a full head visor and a vest so you can feel shots hit you and see in full 360, in an immersive environment--my only gripe is that for some reason the software doesn't render your legs! The things around you in VR actually have a real life analog so when you reach out to touch a droid or a railing--its actually there. The story takes you through a few areas and you have to solve minor puzzles while being shot at by storm troopers My kids needless to say loved it (and incidentally their storm trooper avatars are the same size as they are so it's kind of funny). I can honestly say that the last time I was blown away by CGI was the first Jurassic park--but this did it to me again.. |

I've been fooled plenty of times by CGI, at least in movies. I can't be fooled in a video game because I know it is 100% CGI. You can't be fooled by something you already know is not real, at least not in this context. I can see a point in the future where VR will start to fool your brain. You don't believe it is real consciously, but subconsciously your mind tends to not know the difference. When you watch a friend trying out VR and after 20 minutes he goes to lean on a table that isn't there, you understand that. But in film, you don't always know, and even if you suspect it is easy to let yourself forget and assume it is true film you are watching, and not CGI. I would put money on it that there are movies even Howard has seen where he didn't know something was CGI. |

If you come to a video game forum to have discussions about science and medicine, you're gonna have a bad time. |
