Crimping tool for Molex insulated flag terminals?
« on: January 11, 2018, 02:56:34 pm »
G'day,

I use insulated Molex quick disconnects in my control panels but sometimes have to bend the legs on the microswitches if there is a tight fit under the panel.

I hate having to do this because it's messy and weakens the legs on the switches. What I'd really like to do is use flag (right-angle) terminals in these situations so that there is more clearance without bending legs.

Does anyone have experience with insulated Molex flag terminals? I've been looking online but just get lost in the sea of model numbers (for the terminals and crimping tools).

Plus, the official Molex hand tools are stupid expensive... hoping for some cheapo knock-off that could do the job.

Any advice would be appreciated...

I may get some myself.  I usually just bend the microswitch since I have a ton of them laying around in case it breaks.

This crimper is under $20 shipped at Amazon:

The molex connectors you need are size .187:

P.S. - If you're outside of the U.S. you can copy and paste the descriptions into your Amazon of choice.   :applaud:

Hope this helps.

That is not a Molex connector.

Correct, This is a Molex:

The molex crimp pins are sometimes refered to as flags due to the “flag” bits at the back of the crimp.

Good catch!  I think he knew what he meant to say.  He wanted an insulated connector that had a right angle.  The "normal" ones need to get bent in tight places, which can result in the microswitch terminal breaking off.  I interpreted it as such so no biggie.  The links are correct for the female flag quick disconnects (not molex).

I think he knew what he meant to say.

Thanks... but I clearly said what I meant: insulated Molex quick disconnects.

The other hints was that I was talking about control panels...

Del, do you know if the dimensions of insulated flag terminals are basically generic (i.e. can a generic crimper can work with different brands of quick disconnect?)

Cheers

Not really.

“Quick disconnects” as you call them come in various types, sizes and makes.
And they are not all compatible with the same crimping tools unfortunately.

You can buy crimpers with interchangeable jaws that will cater to a large majority of crimps but not all.
