I am tired of the argument that it brings more people into the hobby. I don't want more people unless they care about the games.
I had to pay way too much for my Tempest. I saw a Taito cab gutted and raped by a Pandora's box on Craigslist. It pisses me off.

It doesn't bring anyone into the hobby, all it does it kill prices.  $2,000 for a Ms Pacman cabinet, or $20 for a miniature one that's close enough and you'll be tired of in a week?  Those TV joysticks killed the value of those classics overnight.  The bitching was unreal at arcade shows that year.... The get a $300 Ms Pac, fix the board, cap the monitor, throw $400 decals on it, and flip it for a $1,000 profit days were over.   :lol

You just made me pro-Arcade 1Up.  It they kill the flipper and 60-1 "conversion" market that is a good thing.

Yeah, pretty sure Arcade 1Up killed the market for multicades this Christmas.   One guy in Houston pretty much did that as his only source of income and he's been awfully quiet lately....

Whenever I see those shelves in department stores with the cheapie arcade products like Arcade 1UP or the Jakks stuff, I just roll my eyes, sigh, and let a little piece of my soul die away.

I don't care for making this hobby more accessible.  I say keep it exclusive, niche.  Makes people really work to learn about their projects, gets them to understand how to maintain their cabinets and it keeps the level of quality higher.

All this hoo-ra for making arcade games more accessible is just biting us in the ass. We've seen it already, time and time again, and it's getting worse. Prices of items are now getting to ridiculous levels. There was a list of sub-$100 boards that you could get a year ago (and was priced like that for years prior) that have now almost doubled in price now.  This trend of converted original cabinets with ---smurfy--- raspberry Pi installations going for thousands of dollars needs to stop.  Or we see people parting out original cabinets for these pandoras/pi's/60-n-1 and trying to hawk those parts for insane prices, as if they struck gold.

Do you want to be able to buy arcade quality joysticks and buttons 20 years from now?  Well you better be glad the prices are skyrocketing now because that means places like happ can stay in business.  They sure aren't getting the majority of their money from actual arcades these days.... it's from people like us and yes, even the people buying the 1up cabs and upgrading them or building those horrid Pi cabinets.

Quality Joysticks can be found anywhere these days. You can thank fighting games for that.
I don’t see that changing in the next 20 years.

And the influx of the Jakks handhelds and 1up Arcade trash products isn’t what’s keeping happs in business. Casinos are. As long as gambling machines are still around, we don’t have to worry about Happs going down.

*sigh*

You'll never be able to buy new happ joysticks again if they stop making them.  They don't exactly put a lot of joysticks and arcade push buttons on casino games and if there isn't demand for a particular product then they'll stop making it.  The fighter scene yields almost zero demand because they are Nippon fetishists that only want sanwa style parts.   I appreciate your input, but next time think it through before you respond.

I don’t know why you always gotta end with throwing shade in your responses. I’ve been making an effort to be cool with you, but you make it really difficult with quips like this.

Anyway, your point was about obtaining quality sticks. The Nippon fetish controls,as you do racially put it,  like Sanwas are indeed quality sticks. They’re just not Happ Joys.

And I don’t know when the last time you went to a casino, but there are still MANY games there that still use push buttons, switches, touch screens, chrome t-molding, bill despensers, power supplies, led lighting....all these things Happs has in stock. They are not going to be in trouble if people stop buying Joysticks.

Alright Howard, looks like you’re still going through your rough patch so I’ll be accommodating. I’m sorry for instantly dismissing your points. I just feel like the hobby doesn’t need any more exposure, and would like to see it stay niche and to the size it was before these low quality cash-grab products were put up on department store shelves.

That’s just my personal preference for the direction of this hobby. I’m sorry if that isn’t in alignment with yours. But your concern for not having available products 20 years from now is valid.

I hope things get on an upward trend for you. I’ll try to avoid interacting with you from now on, unless you invite me to. Godspeed.

Careful, it's the holiday season and you're dealing with an easily triggered atheist.

I think any increased interest in our hobby is a good thing. Keeps machines out of the landfill.

I've been given a few of those mini cabinets over the past few years.  I keep them on a shelf in the basement arcade.  After each party I notice that my kids friends have taken them down and played them so they are good for something.  It is also fun to collect the ones that match a full-size cabinet I own.

The mini-Tetris is actually a lot of fun.  I just wish it saved high scores.

I like the tiny cabs purely for decoration.  I have the tiny arcade pacman and when I see them in bargain bins I often pick them up.  There's a guy on ebay that sells tiny 3d printed models of various cabs complete with side art.  I'd like to have a go at that sometime but only if I could find some lcds that I could use as a scale monitor so I could shove a Pi in there or something for novelty's sake.

I got the 1up galaga for 299 and wallyworld goofedup my order so I got 50 bucks back for the trouble.

I assembled it yesterday.  Played one game and the joystick broke.  Stuck a wico leaf joystick.  Some bright spark put a slot for the joystick making it a two way.  I thought galaga was 4 way.  Had to bondo that up for the spade bit, and shagged up the CP up a bit. Added two service buttons and wired them all to the gpio on the pi.

With the LCD daughter board and some spare bits, made it a nice cabaret for less than $50. That riser was a bit of a rip off.  The steam link was overkill,  besides the pi can stream too.

How much can I flog it for?
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Galaga and Galaxian were always 2 way - wasn't until a bit later the games based on them ( ie. Gorf) began using 8 way sticks to move forward and backward as well as to the sides. Then with the Anniversary machines they released with Ms. Pacman/Galaga they went with 4 way for Ms. pacman and Pacman so that might be where you are thinking it came with a 4-way.

Yeah seems the deluxe version is being sold a lot of places that decided to carry just one model to get some sales without taking up a big section of their store ( Home Depot, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc.)

Don't mind asking did you figure out which wire is ground on the joystick all I see is 2 blacks and 2 yellows.

With the joystick and other buttons it does not matter as long as 1 goes to ground - So if both yellows are from Left then you would hook up 1 yellow to one side and the other to the other side of the switch. the switch merely completes the circuit when pressed so it doesn't matter which side is which.
