Spinners:
If you're buying new, it's hard to beat the TT2 spinner from GGG, but the SpinTrak from Ultimarc comes very close.

If you buy a used arcade spinner, you'll need an optical (mouse) encoder like one of these to translate the quadrature waveforms to mouse movements.
- OptiWiz from GGG
- StefanBurger's Illuminated Arcade Spinner firmware on an Arduino. (the firmware is on the linked Thingiverse page)

Rotary Joysticks:
There are two basic types of rotary joystick:

1. Mechanical Rotary -- the "clicky" 12 steps per rotation type used in Ikari Warriors and the majority of other rotary joystick games.

Happ P/N 50-5618-00 available at arcadeemulator.net.

You will also need a rotary encoder to translate changes in the rotary switch position into keystrokes.
- KADE miniArcade (if you find the old Minimus board) or KADE miniArcade 2.0 (works with a wide variety of 32u4 AVR boards)
- GP-Wiz40 by GGG
- Rotary Joystick Interface by Ultimarc (only handles the rotary function, expensive and non-programmable, but it is plug-and-play easy)

Mechanical rotary stick settings from the wiki.

MAME Settings for Mechanical Rotary Joysticks

For mechanical rotary games:

Input (this Game) menu

    Positional Analog to none

Analog Control menu

    Positional Digital Speed = 0
    Positional Sensitivity = 100

For optical rotary games:

Input (this Game) menu

    Dial Analog to none

Analog Control menu

Dial Digital Speed = double the default value
    Dial Sensitivity = default value

2. Optical Rotary -- the "non-clicky" 24 steps per rotation type used in only 4 games.
    Caliber .50
    Exterminator
    Touchdown Fever
    Touchdown Fever II

Happ P/N 50-5619-00 available at arcadeemulator.net.

You can use a separate axis on the spinner's optical (mouse) encoder. (i.e. spinner on X-axis, rotary joy on Y-axis)

Thanks for the info I know what I wanted but did not know what I actually needed but do now...

A mechanical rotary is what I was after and will look into ggg spinners.

Thanks for the info!
