How can a game that looks and sounds so good, be so bad?

I can't figure out why you sometimes do a close-range spin attack, and sometimes not. Not a lot of info on the attract screen... : /

  • Just because.
From a hardcoregaming101 article:

Much like R-Type‘s Force pod and X-Multiply‘s tentacles, Mystic Riders‘ main gimmick is your broom. The secondary button is devoted to flinging your broom across the screen, which can be aimed in eight directions by pulling away from where you want to throw it. The broom is devastatingly powerful, as it not only hits multiple times but can also nullify enemy fire. By wiggling the joystick up and down, you can also enter a spin maneuver, which makes you temporarily invincible. It only lasts for about a second, plus there’s a very brief cooldown period afterward. It’s also rather risky to execute, because if you aren’t quick enough or blunder into enemy fire before you pull it off, you’ll end up getting killed. Still, it’s extremely powerful from both an offense and a defense perspective.

Thanks. I knew I could look it up, I was just getting whiney about there not being on screen instructions.
I sometimes forget that it would have probably been on the cab itself somewhere.

149,500. I just love having to pull the joystick in the opposite direction of where I want to shoot the broom. Thanks to the idiot who came up with that bright idea.

Argh. Slow progress for me. 168,500

Considering Jason started this with 146000 points I'm assuming he's going to post some major high score in the next day or two.

In other words, I don't feel very confident about my performance, haha.

217,100. You get an extra life at 200,000, and, presumably, at 500,000 and 900,000.

Probably.

In case you haven't noticed: You get a bonus for collecting gems. If you manage to get 500 or more per level, you get 60,000 points. In level 1 you collect as many gems as you can, then you soften the boss up, let him fill the screen, kill him and hurry to collect many, many gems. I haven't managed to collect 500 gems in level 2, although I got pretty close, so after beating the 2nd boss I'm at 170k, give or take 2,000 - 3,000.

Also, there are random 'events' in level 1 that give you gems (a star, a rocket, the word wink), but I don't know how to trigger those. One may occur when shooting the giant bell, one may occur between killing the reaper and the next enemies.

Yes, I did know that stuff. And every time I get the 60k on level 1, I seem to lose a life in the opening of level 2.

I just stopped playing after about an hour and a half, out of frustration. Not my favorite game, but I can't settle, with it being the last one.

If I remember correctly, the champ has the honor of picking the first game.

However, the BYOAC High Score Competition sadly is pretty much dead. It's no big challenge if posting pretty much any score gets you into the top 3. There seem to be some people out there who watch the show, but there are too few players. So, unless we find something to make this more attractive to some new (or old) players, I think the BYOAC High Score Competetion should be laid to rest  :(

I agree.

BUT.

With all of the turnover on this forum (long term people gone/inactive) and plenty of noobs here.  Why don't we start over?  Same rules, all games are open for play?

It would seem that may attract plenty of others.  Plus, even if someone had competed (even won!) in a game 3 or more years ago, some of the newer ones (myself included), would get to compete against them, too!

BYOACHSC2 ?  Not very catchy name, but I can come up with something, haha.

What say you?

If you build it, they will come.

Or maybe they won't........but I think the only way to find out if they will come is to build it....

Opening all games for play may help getting more people into the challenge, but that would probably be just an increase per game. People will only join the games they like and skip the rest. So longterm players (who, like me, have not played that game before) would have to go against rabid fans masters of the game, probably not making it into the top three. So we will end up with many players who will make just a few points, and also longterm players who will just make a few points, if any at all.

I'd say this renders the championship pretty much useless, so how about opening all games for play, ditching the championship and the point system completely, and just doing a bi-weekly challenge? We could use the system we're using now, the 3rd best player chooses the next game, makes the thread for it, etc.

And since acvieluf has worked hard to become the champ, he should choose the first game.

As for the name: - BYOC High Score Challenge Reboot
                         - BYOC High Score Challenge bi-weekly

Are the rabid masters of the games even here, still?

But aside from that, I like the idea.

Congratulations acvieluf!

Sorry to be absent of the last part of this year, both in competing and keeping up with the posts. Maybe we can have the 'high score competition' thread unstickied now that the rules have changed.

If you want the golden joystick, you'll have to wrestle it away from Jasonbar  >:D

Happy 2018, everyone

Golden joystick? Dang, what competition have you been playing, pops? We're all about the bronze over here.

Custom plaque already ordered for the champ.
Happy to clear up that 1 cubic foot of volume in the bottom of my cab & mail it to the champ as soon as it gets the new plaque!
