High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

--------------------------------
Game Name : Mystic Warriors
ROM Name  = mystwarr
--------------------------------

Game Settings:
[Accessed by pressing 'F2' in game]
PLAYER'S LIFE: 1CREDIT 2 LIVES
PLAYER'S ENERGY: 1LIFE 3ENERGIES
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 4/MEDIUM

Controls:
8-way joystick, 2 buttons

The game's controls consists of an eight-way joystick and two buttons for attacking and jumping. Like in Sunset Riders, the player can jump between higher or lower levels, as well as slide. The player character attacks primarily by shooting an unlimited supply of shurikens/daggers, or using his/her weapon at close range. The game includes some improvements that were not included in Sunset Riders, such as the ability for players to change characters after they lose a credit as well as a life gauge that allows the player to sustain up to four hits from enemy attacks before losing a life.

The player must defeat box-carrying enemies in order to obtain power-up items. These include a shuriken power-up that can increase the player's shooting power by up to two levels (which differ between characters), food (sushi, tempura, udon, sukiyaki) that will replenish the player's life gauge, a blue orb with the kanji shinobi (忍) that will surround the player with a barrier for a limited period, a yellow orb with the kanji chikara (力) that will destroy all on-screen enemies, and various kinds of jewelry for extra points.

There are a total of nine stages in the game, in which its own boss awaiting to challenge the player. Like in Sunset Riders, each player will be graded at the end of stage by how much they shot the boss; the player with the highest hit percentage will receive bonus points.

First go.  Don't know if it's the easiest first boss in arcade history, but i think it's safe to say that it's definitely the easiest in a Konami beat-em-up.

What game settings are we to use, lettuce?

My 115u2 shows these:
PLAYER'S LIFE: 1CREDIT 2 LIVES
PLAYER'S ENERGY: 1LIFE 3ENERGIES
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 4/MEDIUM

I got 42,420 on my 2nd game.

This is definitely one of the better Konami 4P beat-em-ups. There's an impressive amount of variety & depth--I've already seen walking, breaking stuff, hanging on a cable, & skiing after playing only 2 games. But wow, I don't know how to survive the skiing part...

Thanks,
-Jason

Gotcha. Please spell out the settings explicitly.

What is considered to be "default" sometimes changes from rev to rev of MAME (although perhaps the in-game defaults, as shown in this instance, are more stable).

Thank you,
-Jason

The standard deviation of my scores is teeny weeny. I can't get through the dumb ski level that is dumb. With 6 or so guys around me, all shooting, trying to dodge the bullets, then my ski path changes & jams me into 3 bullets...

I just take all my hits on the slopes & none elsewhere.

Calgon, take me away!

What's the ski secret?

 :badmood:

Oh, 43,360 stupid points.

Thanks,
-Jason

Just use Keima, when powered up he shoots a nice wall of bullets, so at the ski slope you just need to shoot in the general direction of the baddies. Weave back and forth, and, most importantly, kill them before they can shoot at you. Also, make sure to destroy the snow mobiles immediately. Finally, try to jump over the bullets instead of biting them  :)

Kind of. I hadn't had much of a chance to play this week, Christmas events and all.

So tonight I made time for one last crack at it. And yep, stopped at that boss. Stayed alive for a good while. But alas, it wasn't happening.

Mmm...couldn't get past the ski stage. Tried and tried.

Next comp will end on 12/31. Tidy.

OK, acvieluf, at what game do you totally stink while I totally rock?   >:D

Will try to set up comp tonight.
Probably Mystic Riders or N.Y. Captor, as those are Mystic Warrior's neighbors on my cab...
Oh wait, optical gun. Nam-1975 is next in the Ns...but not a fan of war...

A good bet for the eager is to start practicing Mystic Riders!

Thanks,
-Jason
