240p and pixel perfect emulation for consoles?
« on: December 18, 2017, 04:03:25 am »
After finally got a working setup with groovymame and all the 240p glory I move on the console side of things.

This may be stupid question but do all the emulators for the 240p consoles in general output the native resolution automatically? Let´s take the snes at 256 x 224 (NTSC). Will it ouput this pixel perfect for example with the emulator station or znes, as long as you have low resolution and a crt monitor that can out it? Or are there "special" emulators for crt /low lag use, like groovymame?

Thanks!

It's different for every emulator, that's why I'd recommend sticking to RetroArch and/or Mednafen which can handle several systems.

RetroArch let's you set up individual fullscreen resolutions per system (even per-game), but you can also use super resolutions so you don't have to set them all up one by one.
If you're not familiar with RetroArch you should start by getting familiar with it first. Once you're there, here's a configuration file template setup with super resolutions

Mame does do quite a bit of consoles well.

Hi,

You can give a try to the emu4crt Mednafen mod:

Never liked retroarch that much but will definitely check out the mednafen fork!  Thank you so much! ;)

Have a look here or here
I run NES; SNES; PS1 and PS2 at 2560x240p in combination with Maximus Arcade and CRT Emudriver...

Hope this helps...

Groovy/mame does consoles as well. Rpi output 15khz composite natively. What’s your hardware?

MAME is pretty poor on the console emulation front with the exception of nes. Rpi composite output isn't even close to being accurate, it's interlace only IIRC. Some good work has been done using the gertvga output but it's currently pretty limited. This switching ala groovymame is being worked on though.

Can do 240 progressive via composite with firmware change last year. I have it working. Can definitely tell the difference.

yeah, rock solid picture.
No flicker.
And, if you find a decent enough CRT TV it looks damn good.

The CRT TV's I passed up for free just months before..... :banghead:

This isn't exactly true. MAME does many consoles pretty well and if you already have GroovyMAME setup then just add the Software List ROMs to your rompath then you're good.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought I read that mame has near perfect emulation of m68000 and z80 processors. That covers a few systems right there.

Hi,

I`m using Groovyarcade 2019 which is working great on my Sony CRT TV, but I would like to try 240p NES console emulation with Mednafen.

I see that after the switchres executable you set the system type along with other parameters (snes or genesis) but when i use "nes" it starts in 480i. Same goes for PS1 or PCEngine emulation.

Is there a way I can get NES running in 256×224 (NTSC)? SNES and Genesis for example switch resolutions just fine.

EDIT: I overlooked the the emu4crt Mednafen mod post
