psp charging question
« on: December 09, 2017, 02:15:14 pm »
So the psp I picked up at the pick n pay is the first one I've actually owned so excuse me if this is a dumb question.  Is there anything special about the psp charging cable?  I ask because my new battery came in and for the life of me I can't get it charged.  I had a generic 2 amp power supply (the kind used with hdd to usb adapters) that I attached the appropriate connector to the 5v line and the orange charge light would go off and on intermittently even after a couple of hours the battery wouldn't charge and the battery icon would show full while the battery status in the settings has a "-" for all the info.  So I tried an old atx power supply with more than enough amps and I get the same problem.

Upon reading it appears that some psps have issues charging when they get old.  So do you think it's the battery or the psp?  I've seen chargers where you take the battery out and charge it separately... I was thinking of getting one of those in case it's the psp, but I don't want to keep throwing money at it if it won't solve the problem.

The original PSP adapter is a 5V 1500mA.

If it wont hold any charge the battery is goosed.
It usually happens when its been run down and left without a charge for a long period of time.

Well it's a new battery.  It isn't the official battery, but it's from a US seller so I'm assuming it is of good enough quality.   I ordered the external charger.... I figure I can use it anyway.  The battery just came in, so I assume the charger will come in fast enough to allow me to return the battery if I still have issues.

They also have the ability to charge when connected into USB. The light will be orange when it's charging. Have you tried that?

Hmm weird.
Take it out and stick a multi meter on it?
That will narrow it down to the bat or the PSP atleast.

Yeah I tried the usb, but the battery doesn't have any charge, so it can't stay on by itself long enough to charge anything.  When I have it plugged into the power supply, obviously it won't let the usb charge it.  The battery is showing practically nothing, but it's dead, so I was assuming that was to be expected.

Maybe just a faulty battery?
If its new they usually come with a small charge in to start with.

Well it had a small charge when I started, but where it looked like it was charging but actually didn't, that soon drained.  I've read that the psp has issues with batteries with a low charge, but since I don't have any experience with psps, I don't know if that is true or not.

Couldnt say tbh.
The battery on mine dies over a the course of a few weeks even when turned off.

You could try charging it out of the PSP using a bench PSU if you have access to one but prob easier to get another battery and send that one back.

Well like I said, I've got an external charger on order, so if that doesn't work I'll send it back.  The pins are really tiny.... I don't even know if alligator clips would fit on there.

Hmm.  I don't know what I did, but now it won't turn on even with the generic ac adapter plugged in.  Makes me think the charging circuit inside the psp is bad.  Eh, if it won't power when the charger comes in I'll check the fuses... there are only two according to google.

Which PSP is it?  The original 1000 (fat) or the 2000 (thin)?

You can check if the unit will power on by removing the battery and plugging in the charger.  Be careful when using a generic charger as the plug might not be making contact.  The Thin units can charge via a mini USB plug, that fat will need the original power brick.

Get yourself a battery and a 512 memory card and look online to make a pandora battery.  That way if you shag it, you can restore the PSP back to stock.  You can add firmware to it to play PS1 games and ISOs.

I think your walmart has some of the accessories for the PSP.

Damn i feel dumb. I forgot about usb charging. My psp has been dead for months because my ac adapter pooped the bed. Im gonna go give that a shot on mine.

Edit: nevermind. Looks like i lost the back and the batter in the move. Im not searching through those junk boxes any time soon.

From what I've read, the psp has to be turned on and in usb mode for charging to work, so if it's dead it won't help.

I'm not sure about the US units, but I just plug in the usb and wait for a few minutes and it starts charging.  My slim developed a bouncing fault and did not like going down the carpeted stairs and meeting the hard living room floor too much, and like thomas' unit, is in some pieces, held together with elastic bands and super glue.  I did install a pandora battery and got it back working without the UMD drive.

So it might be bricked.  I'm sure someone here could make you a pandora battery to try out.  Good luck!  ;D
