Super PunchOut!
« on: September 08, 2017, 01:33:01 pm »
Well I was able to acquire a Super PunchOut cab that was in bad shape... looking to do a full restore on this bad boy. I did start a thread (due to my excitement) but I will continue here to post pictures of my progress.

First thing first I decided to tackle the control panel.

Joystick is missing pieces, there is a ducking feature when you pull on the joystick little mac ducks... there were missing pieces and broken pieces. The buttons are all wrong, the cp is ripped and the cp itself was rusting pretty good. Someone plugged in every single connector on the back so all three connections on the micro switches were being used... lol

Removed everything including the Artwork (came off easy with a heat gun), then used a wire brush to remove rust and all of the glue residue. I tried Ooops to remove the glue but it wasn't working... then I went to the big guns and used Xylene which was working, but not so much that I could just wipe it clean. So a combination of Xylene a wire brush attached to my drill and a brillo pad cleaned up the control panel pretty decent.

Next was the Joystick

More cleaning and got new parts from Mikesarcade.com

Finished

Applied the artwork... poorly. I had it all lined up as best as I could (there really were no real hard circles on the artwork. It was at best an approximation of where the buttons would be, it screwed me up)... I took my time but ultimately it is off by a bit. I am going to just leave it. I doubt once this thing is together anyone will notice. Or maybe everyone will. At this point it's their problem. Got a nice repro "Ducking" graphic from Mikesarcade.com.

I also got a nice big fancy blue Knockout button from.... you guessed it Mikesarcade.com (Thanks Mike!)

Artwork was from Gameongrafix.com

I ordered cap kits from Iankellogg.com (because I gotta support other Ian's)...

And I am going back and forth on whether or not to redo the black laminate sides.. They don't look bad... just a bit of battle damage. I may just try to clean them up with Magic Eraser.

Okay... after some issues with ordering parts for the monitors... then realizing that the bottom monitor needed more than a simple cap kit (I had to take it into a repair shop here in town) I had time to get the body of the cab looking nice! Now I know Nintendo Cabs should have laminate but I am a paint guy. So yes I busted out my paint sprayer and some pretty crazy durable top coat with an bonding primer. It turned out fantastic.

1st coat of primer Using Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond tinted dark gray.

1st coat of Black Satin paint

Second Coat

New T-molding

Art Work

Finished. Almost looks Photo shopped!

Got my monitor installed, plugged everything in, checked connections and fired her up... started booting no problem then after about a second the pcb starts sparking and I shut her off...  :banghead: Nasty scorch marks on the PCB. I can't believe it.

Ugh. The monitor PCB or the game board?

Wait, was that the one you took to the repair shop?

Well, just a bit of an update... I found out the guys who did my monitor repair, actually crossed a power wire with an audio wire and I sent plenty of Juice to the audio section of my Punchout PCB. And that is why I got sparks. I replaced all of the components that got fried, but it is way too cold to test. So in the mean time I will cross my fingers.

But on to positive news, I did scan the old side art specifically the "Super" since it was not available online and gave it to Rich from thisoldgame.com to recreate. He emailed me today to tell me that he finished fixing it up and now it is available to buy on his website. It's actually been customized and suped up a bit... I dig it. Check it out... Link below.

If this board doesn't boot up right out of the shoot, I am going to be one pissed off guy.

So I have someone repairing my Board, once that is in I should be golden. I thought I posted this but Rich at thisoldgame.com was able to use my scans to create the original artwork for Super Punchout. That should be available now. Otherwise this thing will be done in a few weeks!

I feel the same way... never really wanted to own one... If I was going to get a Nintendo cab I guess I would like to have Popeye. I suck at DK. But Super Punchout? I'll pass. Like PBJ said, fix it up and flip it to fund more arcade projects. My next project is a Space invader Pinball machine.
