Calling all Hydro Thunder Fans...

I can't remember if anyone's mentioned these games on here before, but I downloaded Riptide GP Renegade (no 3 in the series) and Riptide GP 2 for PS4 yesterday as a pair for the combined bargain sum of £9, and chuffin' heck, Renegade (from the brief play I had before bed-time) is certainly tickling all my Hydro Thunder Hurricane buttons in all the right places - Probably not that surprising as both games are made by Vector Unit who did HTH on the 360. RTGP2's tablet and smart phone origins are a bit more obvious and the tracks seem a bit more linear, but it's still fun to play. Just to my naked eye both games look like they're running at 60fps, which is always a bonus. But if you're a big fan of the original Hydro Thunder and HTH I would whole hardheartedly recommend checking out Renegade and for the price you can't really go wrong (probably cheaper still for all you guys on the other side of the Atlantic).

I have both of those and they are a lot of fun, definitely share the Hydro thunder DNA. I had played one of them years ago on android and was impressed with it then. I wish I could play them on the cab, but the trick system where you have to push the 2 analog sticks in different directions kind of ruins it. Same thing that stopped us from ever getting a flight stick working with Crimson Skies on the original Xbox. Still great fun games for playing on a gamepad though...

By the way did you know you can use DGvoodoo2 with the PC version of Hydro Thunder and make it run at higher resolutions, increase brightness and anti-alias. Basically you can make it look a lot better, its pretty awesome.

I'd heard that the PC version was 60 fps though compared to the 360's 30fps, but I didn't know that you could do that other stuff, that's pretty awesome. It's a little bit of a moot point for me though unfortunately as I'm still using Windows 7 on all of my PCs, so I can't play it (although TBH the 360 version does me just fine).

Never heard of that series before. Was it any good?

Playstation (psx) game, there were 3 of them. Similar to wave race 64.  Definitely worth giving them a spin, even if the low poly low res texture graphics didn't age well.

I'll look into them. If you go down the emulation route, ePSXe has got a lot of options to to take the rough edges off old PS1 games a bit and generally smooth, upscale and anti-alias stuff to make it slightly less fugly. I haven't actually used it for years, so it's probably advanced even further now.

I thought you might like that, might be good for one of your videos... Let me know if you need help setting it up.

The first Jet Moto came out on PC, and can be run with a 3Dfx wrapper fine. Hydro Thunder needs to be the original Eurocom ported PC version, not the Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition version.

Here's both in HD (click to see at 1080p):

Hmmm, looks like I did know about the HD Hydro Thunder before then. Man, my memory is getting shocking. This is what happens when you pass 40.

Likewise, I turned 41 last June. I don't think it's fully sunk in yet...

Heh, I guess I'm a "young" 38 then.  The other day I was going to start a software project for some arcade stuff and realized that I already did that project about 5 years ago.  They say it only gets worse as you age.  I'm doomed.

Thanks Butters, I'd actually seen this guy's older videos where he was repairing the first cab and then got the link-play working with the second (think they randomly came up as a YouTube suggestion for me on a work PC, when I was having a wee internet surf on a lunch break). Hadn't realised he'd put a new one out, so I'll give it a watch. I've mainly been following his progress to see if he comes up with a simple way of getting the arcade version working on modern PCs.

I've had Hydro thunder on my brain a bit recently, as I got a bit obsessed with the idea of getting it working on the micro Outrun cabinet.
