2005 Golden Tee Fore Bad Green Motherboard
« on: November 26, 2017, 05:39:41 pm »
Long story short:  Should I upgrade/replace board in this or replace with RaspberryPi that I already have loaded with games? I have GPIO connected small home-built box w/ joysick/buttons now. Could transfer over.

I was given a 2005 Golden Teen Fore that "wasn't working."  Upon getting it home it took some reading (and searching this site) to get booting so that I could see something on the screen as the 9-pin Molex were swapped. I was worried it fried the board but it still booted.

It finally booted to "Checking Filesystems..." and most of the time rebooted right after that.
I let it run about 15 min and a couple times it got to "Loading Game" but never went further.
Talked to a guy who said the 1.06 U15 should be upgraded and it just needed a new HDD.
Ordered both and before installing I booted it up again because a few times it wouldn't boot unless I had the motherboard/button/trackball cabinet slid all the way in.
No boot what so ever, nothing on screen.  Swapped U15/HDD and same result.
Checked all connections but no change.
Checked all chips and noticed a couple pins that didn't look all the way down on large chip next to U15.  Touched pins with x-acto knife and they slide back. Touched others and they didn't move.  The pins not connected are 138 and 139.

I can solder, but not sure to these little pins, and I have no idea where they go.

that chip "next to u15"
is the main sub processer
if the pin's can move as u say ?
then u are going to have other pins move and or be bridged
u will need to reflow the complete chip 1 pin at a time
grab some rosin flux to aid u

Yeah, that's what I thought based on some of your replies to other posts on here (thank you for sharing your knowledge!!)
I reached out to a friend who might have the tools
If not, should I even try replacing the green board or look for full replacement kit?

well the most honest I can be
if u have never done it before ?
then u need to think is this a skill I need ?
for me I invested in the proper smd station and hood's to be able to remove and replace the parts in question
thank the lord the nec chips are still active.
if it was u2 I would tell u to sit it aside and move on
as the Spartan chip set is nla
but as I stated it is a skill set u will only use a few times
and is a bugger to get right

I found a guy who "might" be able to fix it and is willing to try. It's toast otherwise so have at it.
If anyone wants some of the other parts, let me know.
Starting integrating trackball with Retro Pi. If Motherboard gets fixed it'll be easy to put back to original

Thanks for your input.

as long as this guy is not charging u ?
then I would say go for it.
what these ppl fail to understand and this is the reason for smd
is u need to heat the full chip up at once to get it off. or u will run traces
then the board is a parts-er

Will Golden Tee run on a RPi? Or isn't that what you're aiming for?

I was hoping I could get it to run and leave as-is for some time. To convert it properly I'll need to get the trackball integrated and a new monitor.  Monitor is easy, trackball isn't.

I have 1 version of GT available on my RP arcade setup.  It's set to use a keyboard so I've never played it.  From a few older blog posts most people state it doesn't run well on an Pi.  I'm guessing those were older Pi so mine might work.  Hoping to test it later this week.

The 3D series might be ok, the Fore series no chance in hell.
