High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

--------------------------------
Game Name : Windjammers
ROM Name  = wjammers
--------------------------------

Settings:

Controls:
    8 way joystick, 1 button

Ingame info:

Windjammers / Flying Power Disc

1994 Data East Corporation

Driver: neogeo_noslot.c

A flying disc game where a player uses a disc-like object to score a goal against an opponent. It plays like a futuristic game of air hockey, but instead of using your hand, you use your whole body. The game is held in a small-looking soccer court with obstructions in the middle that can alter the path of the disc when it is thrown.

Neo Geo game-specific settings are not in the MAME DIPs but in the service menu:
Set Time: 30
Difficulty: Level 4 (should show at bottom center in attract mode)

Played the easy characters. Got 600. Not grasping it.

Played Spain medium character. Did more button-mashing. Got 26,101. Did some things that looked effective. Still not grasping it.

I love this game! Its one of my favorite neo geo games along turf masters and the metal slug series.

To play this game and to be good at it you need to understand how to control the disc. You basically use circular motions to affect the throw and how it curves or where it goes (it's almost like playing street fighter). There are super moves you can do as well but require you to pop the disc up first. You can counter super moves with your own super moves which can get intense when you are going back and forth trying to get an angle on your opponent. Speaking of opponent, this really is more fun as a two player games as opposed to playing against the CPU. Changing courts also changes up the strategy adding some variety to the mix.

Its also a good party game because it's quick and players don't have to wait long to get in on the action.

Holy crap this game is awesome, but terribly frustrating. Only twice have I made it past the first round.

I did try the service menu, but the 'slot1' option I left out because I thought that it is for assigning the game, not for configuring said game. Duh.

So these are the settings then:

Life has been crazy.  I'm lucky to beat the first level on this, any tips?

Personally, I don't try any curve balls, and I use the German. He's slow, but his slides can make up for it.
From there, I just use standard tennis strategy: move the opponent from one side to the other until I have an opening.
Aside from that, there's plenty of luck.

It SEEMS like you get 100 for each point you score, and 5000 for each set you win. If you win the match in two sets, I think it's 10,001, as my best matches put against the second opponent at around 21-ish thousand.

Today, I got lucky and got past the first two opponents in just two sets, entering the bonus stage at roughly 42k.

When catching the Frisbee with the dog, jump, and get a 10000 bonus instead of a 5000.

Hooray?

Per my sophisticated game selection algorithm, it will be either Wily Tower or Wink.

Although I've previously flagged Wink as a charming, quirky (& buggy?) bonkers version of Breakout, it does require a spinner, & my MAME says that the driver is preliminary, so it will probably be Wily Tower. Start practicing both!

OK, so tired & busy as I am, I could just not stomach any games even remotely in the neighborhood of Windjammers.

Some more genericness & unimpressiveness in the Ws, can't pick a steering wheel racing game, no more hack & slash games that look like ones we've played recently....

Wacko's a shoo-in, but I bet y'all would gripe about the controls.
War of the Worlds looked promising, but no sound on my version = not gonna play that tease of a game.
Warp Warp's name is 38x better than the game.
Water Balls looks like a lamer version of Puzzle Bobble.
Water ski held my attention for 30 seconds.
Wily Tower has no sound (at least on my old 115u2 rev) & is dumb and hard and dumb.
Wink is almost a non-game & would start a riot.
Wiping, as much as I wanted to choose based on name alone, is Make Trax but with a vacuum cleaner & a dirty carpet & no maze features. And the awfullest most repetitivest music ever.
Witch seemed to be an imaginative pinball game, but it was hiding behind some slot machine gambling bunk past which I was not able to navigate.
Wit's, I couldn't get started. Looked like 4-way Snake.
Wiz was boring as fudge. Almost nothing happened.
Wiz Wars as fabulastic but y'all will flip if I choose a joystick+dial game
Lots of standard hack & slash baloney.
Wizard of Wor was already done.
No Wonder* allowed
Woodpecker = awful
No World sports or World fighty games
No driving game (controls...)
No more wrestling allowed

So, I got in to the letter V.
Generic SHMUPS.
Not sure what the big whoop is on Nintendo Vs. games. Ice Climber & Balloon fight didn't seem hella fun.
Hey, Volfied!! Hey, Volfied has already been picked!
Can't do Vindicator controls...or Viper...or Virtua Bowling

Finally. Viewpoint. A clever SHMUP. Supposed to be cool with the cool people, so now let's all go & get our cool on. You're welcome.

Wily Tower has no sound (at least on my old rev) & is dumb and hard and dumb.

It has sound on .161. It also had me screaming at the screen inside of the first ten minutes. Don't ever play this one with an analog joypad or an eight way joystick.
