Wii with HDD mod.
« on: November 01, 2017, 03:09:23 pm »
Looking for some pointers from those in the know.

I picked up a cheap Wii tonight that has been mod’d to take a external HDD which was meant to have some games on it.

Now after getting it home I have established this poor little console has been through the mill and abused by young kids I assume.

Theres something jammed in the CD slot and its had some sort of brown tar like substance and marker pen scrawled all over it!

So once I have got a tri wing driver the right side ime going to cleanher up properly!

Anywho I digress...
So I booted it up ok and tried the boot loader but it says slow HDD then just hangs.
I have found the HDD is ---fouled up beyond all recognition---, by the feels the connection where the USB plugs in has broken.

So I have another USB HDD, Am I right in thinking if I drom some ISO’s on there after formatting it with WBMS it should work?

Cheers.

I use an external on mine (wii u in wii mode) i know they are particular about which usb port is used and how much power the drive draws. External power is recommended. Mine uses a splitter and connects to 2 usb ports for power.

Thanks Thomas,

Well I put 2 ISO’s on my HDD and after figuring out it will only work in one USB slot it booted into the boot loader and displayed them.

Only problem is now that when I click one I just get a black screen so not sure what to try now.

Well I had a brief tinker before bed last night.
Seems to be some kind of video issue as I was tinkering with the output method in the options and managed to get one to load before it told me I should be using another resolution.

Just going to have to tinker I think.

How are the games being launched? I only ever messed with WiiFlow. Did they mention how it was modded?

Its just been soft mod’d far as I can tell.
It has USB launcher DX installed.
I load that up and it can see the ISO’s I have placed on the HDD.

It will play sound effects associated with the game in the launcher menu but after clicking it to load the screen goes black and the Wii mote disconnects.

Man I haven't messed with a Wii in long time. but that issue with the wiimotes turning off sounds familiar. With WiiFlow if it didn't like the ISO file it did that. But I remember still being able to load other games fine.

If homebrew channel is installed you can try loading WiiFlow or another loader.

Cheers ile look into that.

From what I have read up on the subject it could be one of a few things.

The video output mode
A bad dump
The loader missing some CIos file? (cant recall name will need more research on that one)

Thats all ive dug up thus far but will have a play tonight once I get in from work.

Managed to find some replacement covers on ebay for £2 so thats sorted :)

Will have to wait for the tri wing to come before I can strip it down any but the way whatever it is has been jammed in the CD drive I think that may be goosed.
Maybe see if I can get a replacement but ime not to worried about that if I can get the HDD system to work properly.

Will just need to find a good source for ISO’s

You're not doing something like trying to play NTSC isos on a PAL Wii, are you?

some loaders force video modes and by default it's usually NTSC. make sure it's forcing the correct video for you region (pal for EU and NTSC for america)

this is so you can force pal games to play on NTSC consoles and vice versa.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's either bad ISOs or a bad video setting somewhere.  You wouldn't be getting to the bootloader if it was a problem with your HDD.

I dimly recall I had to download an app called "Pimp My Wii" that would download all the compromised cISOs/WADs onto your system.  Once I did that, I never had an error again, and I kept my Wii on a very, very old version of the OS because I didn't want to lose MP3 functionality.  (Laughable now, but an MP3 player hooked up to your TV was kind of uncommon back then!)

Well, what fixed it you git?

Well I basically wiped the loader off, installed a fresh version and changed the program I was using to mount the ISO to the HDD.

Then there was some buggering around with settings to get everything working and voila!

Not bad for a £20 gamble lol.

Just need to strip and clean it now as it really is ---smurfing--- disgusting lol

My tri wing driver arrived today so I stripped the thing apart and it was just as minging inside as out!

Ide cleaned the worst off before I took any photos but this little bit gives a good idea....

That brown gunk was everywhere! Ime assuming its smoke residue or something but who knows!?
Props to the kids though... I dunno how the hell they got green marker pen in some of the places they did but they are little miracle workers after all!!

I also managed to get the blocked CD out of it, It was a pirated disk but had another blob of that gunk on it so thats probably why it jammed in!
Ime not going to risk putting another disk in though.

So anywho after a few hours of TLC:

Yeah must admit I can only imagine the abuse this thing must of suffered but it seems pretty hearty lol

No rattles or odd noises and runs sweet.
Just a shame the HDD didn’t survive!!

The resident evil games are good shooters and if you search for "wii zapper games" you'll get a list of must-haves as lightgun games are a dying art.  I can give you a list of stuff later, but atm I'm tired and can't think straight.

"Scarface: the world is yours" is a pretty decent for a GTA ripoff gameplay wise. lots of things to do, so it keeps you hanging.

"Wii sports" and "Wii sports resort" are both good "party" type games. lots of competitive games to play.

"Animal Crossing" if you are into that grinding and getting 100% of everything kind of gameplay.

"Geon Cube" is an under the radar kind of game. it plays quite well.

"Mad World" if not just for the artstyle...the blood...so much blood and murder.

"Red Steel 2" if you have one of the new remote with the built in motion plus or have the little dongle plugin for it...check this one out. the sword control...is...unreal.. it's damn near perfect 1:1.

Get some of the WiiWare titles installed on that thing.   Castlevania:The Adventure Rebirth, Contra Rebirth, Megaman 9 + 10, Bomberman Blast, La-Mulana, Dr. Mario Online RX, Retro City Rampage, Alien Crush Returns, Space Invaders Get Even, Lost Winds...

There's a lot of pretty decent WiiWare games to throw on there.

This thread got me to fish out my Wii from storage and replay some of these wiiware games. I also wanted to see how my OSSC would make the wii's component signal look.  Looks great! Scanlines are nice, and with the OSSC on a Benq Zowie Monitor, the lag is pretty much non-existent. I'm pretty sensitive about input lag.

Sweet :)

I got castlevania on and working but I couldn’t get any of the others to work :(

I read something about needing certain Ios?

I dunno but I have more than enough games to play atm so will leave it for now.

I also found out they made a sequel to boom blox so I got that as well :D

Unfortunately the sequel isn't that great.  We played the absolute ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of part 1, I think it was the best 3rd party game on that system.

Zack and Wiki is another game worth taking a look at.  It doesn't quite make it to the "great" level but it was fun.  I'd give each level an honest shot and then consult a walkthrough as needed.

I think I'm using IOS236 to get my games loaded, and it seems to have worked with every game I've thrown on it.

I haven't installed any full wii games yet, but I really want to play Muramasa The Demon Blade since I missed it when it was released. I'm a fan of Vanillaware's Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown, and apparently Muramasa is pretty great as well.

One thing I completely forgot about having a hacked wii is I can throw the N64 releases that came to Virtual Console on it, and use the Gamecube controller to play. Also there's the added benefit of getting a nicer quality video signal via component. I was never a fan of the N64, so it doesn't merit me getting an original console and HD modding it, but there are like 3 games I would totally play on the hacked wii.   Mario 3D, Paper Mario, and Zelda OOT.
The rest of the library doesn't interest me, even Star Fox 64 gets my thumbs down when they changed the voices to actual english speaking. So cringy.
