Free CRT, worth it?
« on: October 20, 2017, 12:45:18 pm »
So someone posted on Craigslist where I live with a free "working" (well, they claim it's working) arcade monitor, 25",  pulled from a Silver Strike Bowling Cabinet. I have reason to believe that it will fit my current cabinet that I'm using as a base for my project. Free is always a good price, but since I don't drive the place is far enough away for me to have to call in a favor or two to pick it up. So I guess the question is: is it worth troubling with, with the understanding that my skillset with dealing with arcade monitors is very limited at this point? Is it going to be more trouble than it's worth?

I just drove a 220 mile round trip to pick up the crt i wanted. There’s pros and cons but i would always choose a crt over an lcd. It’s the second most important thing next to getting the controls right IMO.

Buy the driver a couple of drinks. If it works then you’ll appreciate the difference, if it doesn’t and it’s out of your comfort zone to fix it then you haven’t lost much.

Me - I’d go for it.

It’s free. Go pick it up. You can learn to fix things on it. If you screw it up, you’re not out any money. Why aren’t you in your car yet?

Did that sound good in your head? Because online it sounds pretty offensive.

Eh, I'll take choice C: Has a massive anxiety disorder and doesn't want to be behind the wheel of a car. The last time I drove anything was a Humvee, and Clinton was still president. But I do see everyone's points, it's worth it just to learn from it. I'll go see if the guy still has it or not.

I think it would be worth your while if you can find a use for it.... If you got a pic your looking for a dark grey screen with minimal burn (might save you the trip if its all faded and burnt), you could also put a arcade style chassis on a 25" television tube. most of which you can do from your local thrift store and some E/pay.

Well, at the risk of someone in Illinois or nearby snapping it up, here's the link: https://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/vgm/d/free-working-25-standard/6353608903.html

It does look to be in good shape, but what do I know?

While I like free pickups, I'm not too thrilled on having the recycling costs passed onto my behalf.

Turns out it was gone this morning, meaning I really had no shot of snagging it before someone else. All the same, thank you all for your advice on this!
