Safely handle arcade CRT
« on: October 19, 2017, 03:42:30 pm »
I am selling my arcade mame cab I built which has my beloved Bill Labs Quad Sync CRT inside it. I will have to disassemble cabinet to get it out my basement which also means I need to handle an open CRT. I dont want to get electrocuted from an exposed capacitor. My question is, if I unplug the power to the monitor, how long does it take for the capacitor to discharge on its own so I can safely handle the monitor chassis?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Some monitors could hold a charge for months, maybe longer. You could be waiting a very long time. And you wouldn't ever be sure if it was actually discharged...unless your discharge the monitor yourself.

You really should learn how to do this...it's not that hard. Here are a couple videos to watch:

Some caps can store charge for years.

As above just make sure you discharge it properly and you will be fine

Caps can hold a charge for a long time. That being said I never discharge a monitor to remove it from the cabinet.  The only time I discharge is if I am disassembling it for repair.
