Question about range settings
« on: October 13, 2017, 05:04:15 pm »
I'm using the following modeline settings:

crt_range0                15200-20500, 54.70-62.00, 1.500, 4.700, 4.700, 0.602, 0.191, 1.352, 0, 0, 192, 288, 390, 576
crt_range1                30300-35000, 54.70-62.00, 0.500, 2.000, 2.600, 0.128, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 320, 480, 0, 0
crt_range2                30300-35000, 54.70-62.00, 0.500, 2.000, 2.600, 0.030, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 481, 512, 0, 0
crt_range3                42200-49900, 54.70-62.00, 0.800, 0.755, 3.400, 0.067, 0.156, 0.444, 0, 0, 640, 800, 0, 0

My CRT BVM monitor displays 15200-20500 and 42200-49900 perfectly but 30300-35000 has discoloration (solid image but muddy colors). I tried editing some of the modes manually to via arcadeOSD and have attempted to push the Horizontal sync up to 35-36khz which in one mode fixed the colors. But I have no idea what I'm actually doing!

If there a way I can remove the 30300-35000 range and will GroovyMame then use the 42200-49900 range instead for say 640x480p? Or how would I configure 640x480p to use the higher horizontal range?

Thanks
John

Quick update. I change the mame.ini settings to:

crt_range0                15200-20500, 54.70-62.00, 1.500, 4.700, 4.700, 0.602, 0.191, 1.352, 0, 0, 192, 288, 390, 576
crt_range1                42200-49900, 54.70-62.00, 0.500, 2.000, 2.600, 0.128, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 320, 480, 0, 0
crt_range2                42200-49900, 54.70-62.00, 0.500, 2.000, 2.600, 0.030, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 481, 512, 0, 0
crt_range3                42200-49900, 54.70-62.00, 0.800, 0.755, 3.400, 0.067, 0.156, 0.444, 0, 0, 640, 800, 0, 0

That fixed the muddy color issue for Midday games but not 640x480p games. The Midday mode selected was 2560x400p image was rock solid and colors spot on but the V size alignment was squashed.

You may try replacing the horizontal values, sometimes you get wrong colors when porch values are too low.

E.g., change:

30300-35000, 54.70-62.00, 0.500, 2.000, 2.600, 0.128, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 320, 480, 0, 0

by

30300-35000, 54.70-62.00,  0.800, 0.755, 3.400, 0.128, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 320, 480, 0, 0
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Thanks Calamity for taking the time to respond. I managed to fix the colour issue in the end by trying out different ranges for the monitor file. My current settings in mame ini are:

crt_range0                15200-20500, 54.70-62.00, 1.500, 4.700, 4.700, 0.602, 0.191, 1.352, 0, 0, 192, 288, 390, 576
crt_range1                42200-49900, 54.70-62.00, 0.500, 2.000, 2.600, 0.128, 0.030, 1.032, 0, 0, 320, 460, 0, 0

This provides good coverage across R-Type; Narc / Paperboy and Radikal Racers. The progressive mode for Narc, Paperboy and Radikal Racers is a bit squashed but with the v-size setting on the BVM D24 monitor maxed out it looks pretty good.

To close the loop on the thread. I managed to tune most the video modes to get rid of the muddy colours by increasing the horizontal settings using ArcadeOSD. I then used ini files to set specific modes for games like Narc and Paperboy. Really pleased with the results.
