Dayclona Usa 2
« on: October 09, 2017, 08:28:48 am »
UPDATE: this thread started off as a 2 in 1 project but has been downgraded to a single machine. Carry on.

So I have a Daytona USA 2, and I got a base for a racing cab from badmouth but it was just the base and seat. I decided to pull Daytona 2 apart and build up the base into a new cab.

Here is the steel square tubes mated to the stock monitor support frame to measurement and drilling:

Got all that finished and put Daytona 2 back together.....
except now it didn't want to run properly, everything worked but the steering. I swapped in another wheel and got the same results. Seems like the driver board finally tapped out (its been finicky for a while now).

Now my current course of action is to strip down and convert the Daytona 2 cab then build up the clone after and link them.

Here is Daytona 2 in its natural state:

and here it is with extreme weight reduction:

Took 2 hours to strip it down, I still need to pull the monitor because its medium res and useless in this application. I have a tri-sync that needs a cap kit and another tri-sync that needs the relays replaced, so both cabs should have CRT goodness, but theres always LCDs since a 32" will fit nicely in the cab.  Next step is cleaning it. I was wiping down the wires and boards as I pulled them (and took pictures of everything) and its ---smurfing--- disgusting in there.  I'll be running a length of cat5 to the back and installing a bunch of fans to push air out the back of the cab ; fans in the front will pull air in. Im hoping to keep my wiring a lot tidier than Sega's factory wiring.

I'll be cleaning and wiring what I can while I look for a happ wheel to mate to my Daytona USA 1 dash. I already have 1 immersion PCB ; I'll worry about the other cabs stuff when the time comes.

This is cool, a bit confused though. You have one complete Daytona 2 and the base and seat from another so your goona try to duplicate the top half of the complete one?

Kind of, I'm going to build the same top section but use initial d plastics on the sides. But that's phase 2; gotta get through ohase 1 first

Actually got some work done on this pig ---smurf--- this weekend.

Finished gutting it:

The monitor is buttfucking heavy.

Finished cleaning it:

(the inside boards are on the floor drying in the background)

Decased the guestroom LCD and.....

Its about 3/4" too wide. So I have to put it back in the case

Bought a new crummy Toshiba 32" from bestbuy for $140:

and it fit like a glove, and gets to keep its case!

So then I decided to get started on the paint.   The lemon-lime yellow is getting covered. One of these were used as my guinea pig:

The are both scratched up and in rough shape.

So I took the other one, thats actually WORSE than that one^ and prepped it for paint, and the results look promising!

I also removed all the decals you see on the seat in the previous pictures, and then prepped and painted it:

Last up is the sides. I only had time to strip the 2 sides and there is a TON of glue residue left over :(

you can actually see the word sega in adhesive on the bottom one. Will probably take a day or 2 to get it all off , then prep and paint the sides.

I am working on the art:
32x21.5
Seat logos: 7x5.5 top
9x26.5 bottom "stripe area"
7x7 middle
6x6 for 2 sides aka seat wings

slim above monitor Marquee 28.75x5.25
forgot to measure the "big marquee" its definitely 28.75" wide, just dont know the height.

I'll probably add it to my GDrive, so someone else can use it as a base

Looks great! The paint looks nice! What kind of paint did you use? Did you sand and prime at all?

How much room did you have for the TV? On the midway cabs you only have about 28 and 5/8. So for my cab I have to find a super slim 32" and then probably decase it. I have found a couple that look like they might just make it though without decasing...

28 3/4" is the inside space, TV is 28 5/8" wide so its pretty much the perfect TV size.
I'll check the specific paint when I get home, but its spary paint for plastic with primer build in. I prepped the surface with 400 grit sandpaper.  I need to finished glue strpping the side panels, so I can bondo the cracks, then it'll get the same sand and 2 coats of spray technique added.  Just ordered up the HAPP wheel, now to dig out my immersion PCB and start prewiring everything.

Do you still have the mounting frames for the monitor?

I have something that will save you some time, also with the 32" TV speakers the sound may be muffled.  Vizio S2920W-C0 will fit depending on the height of that television.

I used 80/20 to build a H-Frame and another image to mount the monitor and speaker.  I figured that monitors/televisions
VESA mounts will be in different spots & i suck at wood working. So depending, you'll be able to slide the horizontal beams to fit your monitor than redoing your set-up.....

That's actually quite a clever solution! I'm going a little more basic, and if I need to raise the tv, I'll just move the shelf already in there.  I've made more paint progress but in waiting to finish it before the next round of pictures. JB is awesome on plastic..... till you try to paint it. Luckily almost all of it is on the INSIDE of the plastics.

So the paint was just Rustoleum "2X Paint and Primer in 1" in Candy Red gloss.  2 coats with a 400 grit sand between and after, then a clear coat.

After many tries with many different chemicals, I gave up and sanded. 100 grit to bust up the rock solid adhesive, then 150 and 220 to smoother it all out.

Some JB Weld to hold the cracks together and fix some plastic. It smells terrible and almost made me sick.

Wired in the power strip to the factory power switch:

I cleaned the fan grill better too, as you can see in the later shots.

Re-attached the side panels and seat back

I ordered my HAPP wheel and FFB motor, it was supposed to be here by tomorrow but the shipper didnt send it out until a week after I won the auction (with a buy it now no less!) so it probably wont be here till middle of next week.  Im making up the wires for the immersion board in the interim.

Those Initial D panels you see in front of my washing machine are going on the other sit down cab (phase 2) and wont be stripped, just cleaned up.

So I decided to go ahead and finish up the brackets for Cab 2.

This is like $200 worth of steel , no one had any for sale so fabrication it is!
No access to a shearer , so the "top plates" were cut with a band saw, they aren't 100% straight, but they are 99% straight and thats close enough for their purpose.

Here they are:

Dem welds.....

surface rust will be sanded off prior to painting

"test fit"

They are sitting there with no bolts or screws, everything lined up!

"Hammered Black" paint:

I'll take more pictures another day. Got the PC set up in the cab, mounted an exhaust fan to the PC, its an LED fan so it'll let me know if the computer is still on , heh.
Ordered 24W power supply for the forcefeedback, I think Im going to unhook the pedals from the immersion PCB and instead use an APAC, I need the additional inputs for camera, coin, and shifter without worrying about a "button matrix"  I also have a spare PacLED to use for the camera LEDS if I dont just hard wire them all on.

Long time no project update. New jerb will do that.

So here are the finished custom made rails in place:

And here's the current state of DayClona 2 aka Initial:C(lone)

Here is the current state of Dayclona 1:

You couldn't see it before but the top corners were cracked. I repaired them and they resplit when I cranked down the side screws. So this time I cranked them down then patched. We'll see if it works.

Before:

(this is a super arsty pic with the rattle cans out of focus)

And here is the bondo curing.

More to come?

then paint, sand, paint:

Then wait so you can final sand and clear (not done yet)

Fastest racing PC ever.

I havent done any woodworking at all since my grandfather passed, its been a while and I decided to finally get back into it. Invited my dad over for some bonding time.

Getting prepped:

traced the sides out:

aaaaaaaaand trace the other side:

screw all the pieces together and you have a fancy box:

Double flapped the back door, take the 2 screws out of the top and it pops right out

So the angled piece was an engineering nightmare because it wasnt exactly the same as Daytona 2. It pops up a little, but I am fixing that:

Sanded the excess down then slathered it in bondo:

Tagged the seams and edges with black spray paint:

27" Tri-Sync installed

360 controller hack (thanks @Haruman !) in place just need to finish wiring it too. Im stuck trying make Win7 NOT put the resolution above 800x600 ; it'll leave it VGA for a while then BAM, it'll jump to a higher res and I have to panick shut everything down to no damage the monitor.

Does the video card drivers have different settings than what windows is setting?   I vaguely remember win7 and some gfx drivers were kinda flaky with one another. Mostly if you installed the driver software.

That tri-sync monitor is gorgeous! 31khz for racing games is an absolute must imo.

only been a year...

So I finally put together a decent PC for this machine, after changing goals.  Trying to make everything work with arcade parts was just turning into a nightmare, so I scrapped the wheel and pedals plan and just used a Fanatec CSR Forza Elite wheel instead. The upshot of this is I can put a PS3 and or xbox360 in this machine and all those games will work out of the box as the wheel natively supports both.

The PC is an UGLY decommissioned CAD workstation (Dell Precision 5820). I will tap the power button in the future, but for now you tilt the seat back and hit the power button on the front.

Xeon W-2133 @3.60 GHz  (6 core, 12 thread)
16 GB DDR4 RAM
Quadro P2200 GPU (had a P2000, upgraded)

OS on a 256GB M.2 SSD
Data on a 3TB SATA spinner drive until I can figure out how much room I'll actually need.

The pedals are just sitting there until I figure out exactly where I want them, and then I'll drive 2 screws in to hold them in place.

I'm going to build a shelf above and behind the TV to hold the speakers. Originally I had planned to put the sub woofer under the seat but the cables with the speakers I have just didn't allow for it unless I mounted the side speakers behind the seat. The sub fires down and makes the head of the cab really reverb the bass. I will take better pictures of the set up when its been cleaned up a little but it sounds way better than I had anticipated through some desktop speakers with a sub.

Had my wife take it for a test drive, Maximum Speed is her favorite racing game and she still gives me grief to this day for getting rid of the dedicated (Atomiswave) cab I used to own that ran both Speed games.

Throw back 2014 pic:

She still cant beat my times =)

Next up is to get the camera buttons wired up (lights to be done later) then the shifter.

Howa are you liking the fantec pedals?   I've been meaning to get a set but I'm reluctant to pull the trigger.

Missed this update. What happened here? Looked like it was all going well in the previous uppdates.

They are great. Brake pedal has a load cell in it and everything.  I've actually had the set up for a while, I used to do iRacing and other sim racing. This was the one they released for Forza 4 on the 360. I just looked it up, TEN YEARS AGO. But yeah, wheel has obviously held up and as mentioned before works on 360, PS3, and PC.

It was too overwhelming to do two.  I took all the best pieces of both and combined them into 1. If I had infinite time and infinite money I'd have kept them both.

Thanks for posting this thread. Working on some Daytona 2s and considering bondoing the plastic and what not. Sweet build thread!
