Got a pi zero gathering dust.  It reminds me of using a late 80's PC to try to do mid 2000's stuff.
I suppose if you want a generic plug and play setup for use with a gamepad it's ok.

What the world needs is more Pi and PC emulation folks to cross over into the world of FPGA development!

That pi zero works great in a small container for the NES suite of games.  Great Christmas and birthday gift item.

Original hardware > FPGA > PC emulation > Pi emulation > nothing

I like having different options at my disposal and I've used each of the above depending on my needs/situation. And yes, all of those above options have their advantages and disadvantages....even original hardware.

I don't care what the hardware is and what it's called. If it works for me, then I'll use it.

They are fine for what they are -- I just wish everyone would get off the - It's only $35 bandwagon and figure out what the total cost is by the time you add the little extras that other options include that you need to actually do anything with it !!

I built a Raspberry Pi 3 emulation station as a gift. Put it in a R2D2 Case. Going to take some lessons learned and build one for myself (I'll make a project announcement thread for kicks). The comicbook theme is tits. Total cost, not including R2, was around $85. All the controllers fit inside his body - it's storage and case all-in-one. I'm using magnets to hold his dome in place. Works better than any X86 PC emulation I've used.

Hard to argue against the Pi's for an application like this. Pretty sure I couldn't pull this off with PC components

See, that's the perfect.application for a Pi. I don't think anyone is going to argue with you there.

you should remove the pi and put SNES classic guts inside.

If some of you guys have never bought a pi.

You should. Hell, just to check it out. Get a raspberry Pi 3 cana kit. Setup time is measured in minutes. It plays the classics perfectly.

I still use PC's in my arcade machines, but my console emulation is all done on the pi.

Good times are here again!

I'm totally out of the loop. Can't figure out if the Church of Pi people are impossible, or if the ol'crew is being a bunch of crabby patties.

Ok. I'm back to not caring.... even a little.

I am online using an Atari 2600.  You guys all look like posers and wannabe's from my bulletin board perspective of 9600 baud and piggybacked 4K ram chips.

So this weekend's big thing is the mini arcade machines at Cracker Barrel which are supposedly running an Arduino solution.

My last 2 were from Arrow direct.

What controllers are you going to use?

I ordered these initially - pretty price, but work well
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWD8QQJ

I ordered these last time and they seem to be just as good
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MYUDDCV

I've bought a ton of controllers and many were stinkers. I even posted here looking for advice. All these sucked:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YVD3KM
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQN9CRU
several from AliExpress with URL's too long to post

Thanks for the links. For my buddy, he's going to use Xbox360 controllers. I like those SNES ones you linked for mine.

How big is that?
Could an LED projector fit inside it?

I considered using a pico projector and shooting out the radar lens, but there were several concerns:

  • The projectors are spendy and have poor quality
  • It would take up space in the dome and I wouldn't be able to store the controllers inside
  • Concerned with the excess heat
  • Modding this R2 would involve some drillin-n-fillin and I didn't think the results would be worth it

Ultimately, I knew this would be played on a TV in a room without light control so HDMI output seemed the obvious choice.

Thanks! Not bad for now. If it remembered it per-game that would really be slick. With all these custom borders getting created, I'm sure it will come.

Have you considered a Pi?

Anyone interested in giving their RetroFlag case a little more authenticity, check out these Waterslide decals.

These are not stickers but rather the same decals used on airplane models etc. I havn't applied this sticker yet but from what I understand, the existing logo can easily be removed with a quick swipe of acetone. Or if you want to really be careful, you can just use a magic eraser.

Ok so I'm weighing in here too.

For Arcade emulation.. ehh.

For console emulation up to ps1 ...  rPi all day.  You can't beat the affordability vs a PC, and the NesPI case is so high quality it's insane.  I didn't know about the stickers, but just ordered them and am psyched.  Add in a legit NES/SNES controller with the BlissBox 4-play... and it's just way too easy and awesome.

Ugh, I had two stickers in my cart ready to go, when I realized that $5 is 1/4 to 1/5 the cost of the case itself. Just can’t pull that trigger for something non-essential to gameplay.

Two stickers is like half the cost of a case, man!!!1!

I might still bite.... but it gave me pause for a second there. I still need to pick up a few items to make these usable, so $5 stickers are still Griff-richer items at this point.

I may agree with the sentiment that Pis are awesome after this weekend.  After fighting with an Intel NUC 3 for the past 3 years (and shelling out too much cash) to make it an all in one emulation gaming platform I broke down last weekend and bought a Pi 3.  From what I read the install should be fairly easy.  Here's to hoping...

It's stupid easy. You are going to be pleased.

If you find the right image it's stupid easy.  I spent maybe 5 minutes configuring mine, after that, play on.
Installing is easy. Configuring is not.  You'll be at that for a long time, guaranteed. But hey if you're into flipping switches rather than playing games, all the power to you.

ETA Prime has some easy to follow tutorials on utube.  I'm over fighting with my NUC.  I just want to get something set up so I can relax and play.  I was trying to modify a real NES to encase my NUC and it ended up looking like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  I will achieve the look I want with the NES Pi case.  The only downfall is I can't play Gamecube or PS2 games but its no big loss.  I only wanted to play Monkey Ball on GC with my daughter but I'm sure we can find another game she and I can enjoy together.  Or just mod my Wii.  I just need to find a way to hook up a trackball to the Wii.  And RE4 was the only game I enjoyed on PS2 and I can download an HD copy on PS4.

Titch I WILL NOT tell you following:

1.  The machine was already dead when purchased.
2.  It was about the 14th million NES out of the assumed 34 million produced making it as rare as a heat during the summer
3.  It was not as rare as say an original Mario Bros cabinet.
4.  You have my sincerest apologies for cutting into a piece of 5$ plastic.

Make sure you build your Pi with a class 10 micro SD card. Like this one

I think some of the complaints people have with Pi performance is due to them using slow sd cards.

Yep, that one looks good!

And like you said...all the ETA prime videos on YouTube are really great for learning how to set up Retropie.

So far, the only real "issue" I have had is getting all the metadata (box art, etc) to scrape. A couple games don't seem to register with the online DB. Not a huge deal because you can manually put that data in. Just kind of annoying because they are games with common titles.

Use Stephen Selphs scraper

I looked into doing that, but quickly got annoyed with the work it took to get it set up. Then I became even more annoyed that if it worked so well, then why isn't it just built into the latest RetroPie image?

I read the following on a random web site about Selphs Scraper...

Why are there two included scrapers? Why does it take so damned long?

Emulation Station needs two things to look its best: boxart for each game, and a ‘gamelist.xml’ full of metadata for each system. ES has a built-in-scraper, but that uses your roms’ filenames to identify them. That method can be pretty unpredictable.
It’s a better idea to use the included “Steven Selph” scraper in the Retropie textual menus, as it uses rom hashes to provide much more accurate results.

But it takes forever.

To fix:
Note that you can’t use the Selph scraper if Emulation Station is open, or its work will be overwritten. Quit from ES before scraping (If you’re logged in remotely: “killall emulationstation“) then get busy:
sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh
setup/tools
scraper

The scraper will first download all your images in one big queue, and you can watch as things happen in the terminal. This takes about five minutes. Then, at the end of your queue, everything will freeze…or will appear to. For HOURS. Don’t break out of it. Let it sit and ‘do nothing’. Even though there is no visual feedback, the current system’s gamelist.xml is being generated. A recent scrape of ~120 Genesis roms took about three ---smurfing--- hours, conservatively.

The only setting I’d really change from the defaults is to disable “Thumbnails Only”. When I left that enabled I ended up with a bunch of low-res blurry upscales.

I agree, this slow scraping thing sucks because it’s probably one of the first things you’ll do when you set up your RetroPie install, and during this whole time you can’t play anything. Let it run overnight.

As nice as it is to look at and use, Emulation Station seems to have been abandoned by its author with no updates in over a year. The reliance on huge, slow-to-process XML files was one of the things he had hoped to have fixed before he eventually lost interest in the project. This might get fixed someday, but for now it’s best to limit your romsets to a couple hundred, rather than a couple thousand, just to keep EmulationStation running smoothly.

Not sure why people moan its that slow.

The inbuilt one is stupidly slow but Stephens is pretty quick in my experiences of using it.

On a related note, I'm mildly disappointed in the box-art resolution. If you have a theme that uses large box-art, then it's pixelated.

I think low-resolution box art was used to keep the dashboard snappy but I might replace all my boxart with higher rez images and see how it performs...can't be that bad.

I totally forgot about the scraping!

What I did with my Pi was only load on the games I wanted to play. No more using every NES and SNES game, I only loaded up the games I actually played and any other games from the minis. I used the built-in scraper and I let it find everything automatically. That sucked. I erased it all and did it again, but for some reason the scraper was fast as ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. I was able to do them all manually in about 20 minutes.

Really? Ever? I thought we were all guilty of that. Since I didn't have the money to play all the games back-in-the-day I loaded them all up so I could check them out. I used to randomly check out different games, but anymore I just play games for nostalgia. Stuck on Chocolate Island 4 in Super Mario World now. Getting all kinds of pissed, lol.

Well, you have all them GB’s of space why not chuck every game ever on?

Both my Segapi and Pitendo have all games on except the ones that are unplayable (light gun games etc).

But they also both have fav lists so I can quickly find the games I mostly play :)

I get exploring new games but throwing 679 NES games alone onto an emulator console seems like over kill.  You aren't going to be sitting around one day and say to yourself:

"Damn.  I guess I'm all played out on Bases Loaded 2.  Seems like a Bases Loaded 3 kind of day."

Nawahmean?

On a side note I received my NES Pi setup on Saturday.  I'm going to start tinkering this week if I can keep my eyes open when I get home.  This waking up at 4 am to get to work is for the birds.

At first glance, it actually looked okay.  Then I noticed that the controls were just mounted to a board and exposed underneath.  And it was angled and uncomfortable to play.

Then I noticed the artwork was all out of alignment.  I think he slapped posters on the side and then screwed through plexiglass to hold them up.

Would have been fine as a first effort in someone's garage.  A little weird to bring to a show and try to sell, though.

Well, the cabinet probably has only about 24 cubic feet of space inside it. That really limits your hardware options. Sometimes you just have to use a Pi.

Ok fellows.  I had Saturday to myself and was able to set up my Pi 3 with Retro Pie and Emulation Station.  Would I say that my first experience was 'awesome'?  No.  I would categorize it as easy.  Within the span of a day I had it up and running with the help of tutorials by ETA Prime on Youtube.  It took longer to rip my Playstation games than it did to actually set up the Pi.  Now I just have to do some tweaks and I'll be ready to go.

I could never understand people throwing every single game on their console just because they can...

I used to do this on my arcade machine and I've just recently wiped my cabinet and am only adding a curated list of games onto it.   The hoarder in me thought it was cool to have everything... and I still do on archival drives and elsewhere.  But on my cabinet it became a hinderance.  It took forever for me to get to a game I wanted to play, and it was too overwhelming for anyone else who ever wanted to try it.  There might be a couple hundred games people will ever play, and adding every arcade game ever made just makes for a confusing jumble of crap, and makes navigating the frontend a nightmare.

My MAME cab has about a dozen games on it. I could probably lop off a couple more. I have a bunch of dedicated driving arcade machines. My friends all have young kids. They love the drivers. Adult men that come over want to play Galaga. The women typically want to play centipede, if they play the games at all.

Ya know out of everyone thats ever played on my cab not one has ever asked for Galaga
Must be an American thing.

Most people request Pac Man or Space Invaders.
Oh or Street Fighter 2.

My youngest had some friends over Saturday to play games. My dedicated Galaga is not working at the moment. What's the first game I was asked about?  Galaga. Fortunately they could play it on my MAME cabinet but it still made me laugh.

Everybody wants to play Galaga because it rocks.  Spent last night adding carousel logos and backgrounds to ruckages NES Mini Theme.  It was extremely easy with WinSCP.  Almost easy as....pie?

Must be. Here's a story for you.
Maybe 4 yrs ago I had made a bunch of light cabaret arcade machines with various multigame pcbs, which were the entrance to an art exhibit about video game stuff in a real art gallery.

It was in an eclectic little hippie town. (Lots of the 60-70yr old real hippies from the 60s Bay area in this particular town)
One afternoon in walks a couple who were clearly ex-hippies but they were nicely dressed and well-educated.
I'm thinking to myself, wow they walked into the wrong store front?
A pacman painted cabinet was the first item by the door, but the first thing he asked......Do you have Galaga?  I really liked playing Galaga.   Why yes, yes we do...and I led him to an ArcadeSD powered machine.

I have a friend with a home arcade of 30plus machines, he holds house parties near Des Moines Iowa.  He has a row of all the midway's, all of the nintendo titles, atari titles, etc.  But he didn't have Galaga and that's what he always gets asked about.
I ended up making him a cabaret with the NAMCO Reunion Ms Pac/Galaga fpga.
Gets played a lot.

Personally, I like the challenge of Galaxian and find Galaga much easier, but the music, man it is hard to beat.

FTFY.
In Canada, Galaga was also really popular. I remember seeing it a lot in malls and hotel lobbies BITD.

Finally got around to installing the NES logo decal on my mini NES.

Turned out OK. The edges are not quite as invisible as I was expecting but it's certainly better than "RetroFlag for all of us" (whatever that means   ???). Here's how it compares to my minty childhood NES:

I love my RPi3, although I'm using mine for something a little different.
