Got a pi zero gathering dust.  It reminds me of using a late 80's PC to try to do mid 2000's stuff.
I suppose if you want a generic plug and play setup for use with a gamepad it's ok.

What the world needs is more Pi and PC emulation folks to cross over into the world of FPGA development!

That pi zero works great in a small container for the NES suite of games.  Great Christmas and birthday gift item.

Original hardware > FPGA > PC emulation > Pi emulation > nothing

I like having different options at my disposal and I've used each of the above depending on my needs/situation. And yes, all of those above options have their advantages and disadvantages....even original hardware.

I don't care what the hardware is and what it's called. If it works for me, then I'll use it.

They are fine for what they are -- I just wish everyone would get off the - It's only $35 bandwagon and figure out what the total cost is by the time you add the little extras that other options include that you need to actually do anything with it !!

I built a Raspberry Pi 3 emulation station as a gift. Put it in a R2D2 Case. Going to take some lessons learned and build one for myself (I'll make a project announcement thread for kicks). The comicbook theme is tits. Total cost, not including R2, was around $85. All the controllers fit inside his body - it's storage and case all-in-one. I'm using magnets to hold his dome in place. Works better than any X86 PC emulation I've used.

Hard to argue against the Pi's for an application like this. Pretty sure I couldn't pull this off with PC components

See, that's the perfect.application for a Pi. I don't think anyone is going to argue with you there.

you should remove the pi and put SNES classic guts inside.

If some of you guys have never bought a pi.

You should. Hell, just to check it out. Get a raspberry Pi 3 cana kit. Setup time is measured in minutes. It plays the classics perfectly.

I still use PC's in my arcade machines, but my console emulation is all done on the pi.

Good times are here again!

I'm totally out of the loop. Can't figure out if the Church of Pi people are impossible, or if the ol'crew is being a bunch of crabby patties.

Ok. I'm back to not caring.... even a little.

I am online using an Atari 2600.  You guys all look like posers and wannabe's from my bulletin board perspective of 9600 baud and piggybacked 4K ram chips.

So this weekend's big thing is the mini arcade machines at Cracker Barrel which are supposedly running an Arduino solution.

My last 2 were from Arrow direct.

What controllers are you going to use?

I ordered these initially - pretty price, but work well
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWD8QQJ

I ordered these last time and they seem to be just as good
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MYUDDCV

I've bought a ton of controllers and many were stinkers. I even posted here looking for advice. All these sucked:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YVD3KM
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQN9CRU
several from AliExpress with URL's too long to post

Thanks for the links. For my buddy, he's going to use Xbox360 controllers. I like those SNES ones you linked for mine.

How big is that?
Could an LED projector fit inside it?

Only losers type. I implanted a Pi in my brain. I am conveying this message over the internet telepathically.

I considered using a pico projector and shooting out the radar lens, but there were several concerns:

  • The projectors are spendy and have poor quality
  • It would take up space in the dome and I wouldn't be able to store the controllers inside
  • Concerned with the excess heat
  • Modding this R2 would involve some drillin-n-fillin and I didn't think the results would be worth it

Ultimately, I knew this would be played on a TV in a room without light control so HDMI output seemed the obvious choice.

What happened to you, you used to be so cool.  Now you're down with the Pi crowd and it's like I don't even know you anymore.
