Win XP / DirectX 9 crash at launch problem
« on: October 03, 2017, 07:34:14 pm »
My GM test machine is a old 2.8ghz P4 with an AGP Radeon 7000, Win XP 32 bit.

GM 1.52 works fine, but my romset is 1.82, so I installed that version, which is the second to last one to support x86 as well.

I get the following error at launch:

SwitchRes: [empty] (1) horizontal (640x480@61.000000)->(640x480@59.884837)
Direct3D Error: Your graphics card does not fully support non-power-of-two
textures.
Direct3D Error: Your graphics card does not support non-power-of-two textures.
This feature or features are required to use the Direct3D renderer. Please
select another renderer using the -video option or contact the MAME developers
with information about your system.
Unable to initialize Direct3D 9
Fatal error: Unable to complete window creation

Is there any way to get it working, forcing a different renderer?

Tried another setup (Win XP 64 bit) with an X300SE, same issue. What are the cards that properly support the new D3D GM renderer?

You're messing around with some stone age hardware and software there... there may be a solution to be found working with what you've got but I'd be moving to Win 7 x64 and at least a HD 4xxx series card if I were you. Save you some pain.

I'd argue that the minimum should be at least a Radeon HD 5xxx series.

I'll stick with older GM versions for those systems then. HD 5450s seem workable, any issues with the version with one output connector and the breakout cable that splits in two? They're plentiful on ebay.

I think some people here are using the cards with the DMS-59 breakout cables.

Though, there are some Radeon HD 5450 cards on Ebay with VGA & DVI ports, 1GB memory, fanless, free shipping for $20 if you look...

If you go up to $25, there's even more.

Here in the EU the situation is a bit more of a crapshoot, but thanks anyway. I might've even found a local one ...

DMS-59 Splitter cards are often from a series earlier than the sticker. A 6350 dms-59 is normally a dressed-up 5450, for example.
