Operation Nerd Dungeon is go!
« on: September 25, 2017, 07:25:14 pm »
Ive wanted a nerd dungeon for years, And living in a 2 bed semi it was never really that easy to make the room for one but the Ms finally came around to my way of thinking!

Well she thinks its her idea but ive been working her over for years *giggidy*

The plan is to have my 2 retro pie consoles (NES/SNES & Genesis/32x) and a free sat box hooked up to the 32" on the wall.

My Neo Geo MVS bartop and my soon to arrive (i hope) area 51 up in there.

Also a old CRT with N64 and PS2 hooked up to it.

Plus the leather sofa bed as is customary for when you need to get away from the Ms for the night lol

I also intend on doing some creative decor which she is helping with, the start of which is in the pics!

Will take a few weeks to get it fully functional but so far....

Agreed.  I always thought that Man Cave sounded like a gay strip club.

I feel like the term "man cave" is cheesy as heck. It sounds like a condescending term coined by someone trying to be cute when describing a place where "big dumb guy stuff" goes on. Neanderthal stuff. Never been in a cave with TV's and couches.

I will as things progress :)

Unless of course nobody else cares in which case I will just have to chill and enjoy my efforts,
Rather dissapointed nobody has mentioned the storage draws or the wall being laid out and focused on the term man cave instead  :dunno

Well Broke back mountain and the Blue Oyster club defo sound like a gay bar LOL

Glad you noticed the Tetris cabinet, I would of liked something taller to get another row in but they jumped from 3 high to 5 :s

The blue tape on the wall is actually reflective (like used on police cars etc) and I am basically building a pac man maze on the wall for a Vinyl pac-man to sit in along with some ghosts etc.

Ide like to find a neon sign saying Arcade or something to go on the wall to but so far strugling with that!

Loads of ideas but as usual time and lack of funds hinder progress!

Dude, relax, no one called anyone gay. I just offered another name on par with Man Cave. I’m sure the people who frequent the Blue Oyster Club also think they’re doing manly stuff. No judgement. Personally, I’d prefer Blue Oyster to Man Cave. At least it’s a theme.

I managed to dig out my old 64 today ready to get it going!

Ive had to order a s-video lead though as mine only had the olde skool aerial connection.

The reset button has also jammed so ive had to order a driver to strip and fix that but otherwise the console looks pretty good!

The game carts contacts were filthy though!
Doubt they would of played but I have cleaned them up with some contact cleaner and now looking like new again :)

Next job is to clean the actual cartridge cases as they are also filthy!!

Also new draw units built up and located, plus snake viv and neo geo bartop (at perfect playing height :) )

And I think my “console block” is pretty much finished.

I did contemplate hiding the consoles inside the blocks but decided to keep them on display and just keep the games etc in them.

Doesn't the power button/switch on the consoles themselves handle that for you?

The problem with that power strip is that you're already out of outlets.  Then you're going to end up daisy chaining them like I do and then Jennifer's gonna throw another fit.

I wasnt sure how it was going to look with the reflective eyes/lines but the pictures dont do it justice.
They actually look real cool lit up by the TV etc!

Bit more progress but nothing to show at the moment....

I have done a deal for a Old SNES bundle that comes with a boxed scope, arcade stick, 4 way multi tap, international adapter and a few games.
The down side is the SNES is currently DOA, Apparently it wont turn on so I am hoping its just a knackered PSU or a blown Pico Fuse but will have to see when it shows up.
I would be cool to get the SNES running as its had a region hack board installed that changed region when you hold the reset button but if I cant get it going I didnt pay a bad price for all the accessories and I can just buy another console by itself.

I also managed to get a official Nintendo AV lead which has sorted the colour wash out on the N64 And I have brought myself a Everdrive V3 for it.

The next job is to get rid of the crappy wardrobe in the corner and replace it with a cabinet of some sort that I can mount the old CRT TV in and hook the N64 and the SNES up to.
May even try and get the PS2 hooked up to it we shall see.

But the real challenge is finding a unit suitable!

I know what I want in my head but finding it really hard to actually find something like!

So some more updates:

As per the help thread I managed to get the SNES working and been having some fun with it:

Ive destroyed the crappy wardrobe and found a suitable unit to house the CRT and old consoles but I need to wait to pay day in order to buy it.

And finally for now I have picked up the newest member of the household whos fitting in well in his very own games room!
His name is Onix.

Thats it for now :)

I picked up the new “console cabinet” from ikea last night and built it up.
But it needed some modification to fit the old CRT in so I re drilled the side panels to allow me to move the shelf up with the original cam and dowel system so no ugly construction blocks on display.
Plus filled the original holes.

But I also need to put a hole in the back to allow the plugs etc to pass through so I have ordered some desk grommets to do a tidy job of it.

My sign has also arrived and been fitted.

Ile get some pics up once ive finished mod’in the cabinet.

I bet those things are just as uncomfortable as the bartop cabinets, except one fails at being a chair and the other at playing games.

I'll look forward to drinking beer and drilling farts into it if you build one.

LOL yeah I considered multi colour spray painting them as tetris blocks but decided not to bother.

I warn you in advance they are a total bastard to fit!

Give me a old fashioned screw on pendant any day!!

We got that one cheap as the box was damaged but the actual fitting is fine LOL

Had to google him, never heard of him!

Weird ass quote though!!

However fear not yot!

Completion is near as once my desk grommets arrive the olde crt & console unit shall be completed.

After that I am just waiting on the nod to go and pick up the “crown jewel” to go in the corner.

Though I must admit I am dreading carrying it up the stairs.....

Well bar the crown jewel I am calling this project complete.

The bits finally come to finish my console station and so I finished it up today.
The only problem is the TV I had set aside for the purpose is DOA

Luckily I have a little grey one which is working fine until I can find a slightly bigger black replacement.

So heres my modified console cabinet with NES, SNES, N64 and PS2.

So me n the Ms been having some fun with Duck Hunt tonight.
Its funny really the console is older than my Ms but I have been waiting all these years to play Duck Hunt with a Blaster and I wont lie I rather enjoyed it LOL
I could never afford one as a kid and Mum would never buy me one!
Here we are 25+ years later and I finally get to play!!  ;D

Managed to get a replacement TV, 20” and black.
Pretty good picture quality to once it warms up :)

Also fixed the Scope, Not exactly sure why it was not working but the battery contacts were pretty corroded so I stripped it down, cleaned it all up inside and polished all the contacts up and now working again :)

Still no news on when I can pick up my new cab though :(

Totally, for sure. Fish and snakes are practically the same animal. Ask anyone who has studied snakeology of fishenomics and they'll tell you.

Make your arcade sign look more like the Mario flag. Just figure out which Mario you want to use. I'm partial to the first one:

Never was a big fan of Sega. Sonic was fun (though it's way to fast for me now), the rest I actually don't even know. SNES all the way back in the days!

Ive always been a Sega fan boy.
Sonic was great, But I also love Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Road Rash! :)

I just need to aquire a Mega CD next but that should be easier to get than the 32x was!

Though I have much love for the SNES to.

Got another 2 additions for my collection today!

My Sega fanboyism may be showing now lol

Ime well chuffed with the menacer, I paid less for it than they are typically going for on the bay and the box etc is in great condition.

The only problem was the previous guy forgot to take the battery’s out....

And yeah they were bad!

I had to take it apart to get them out, they had almost glued themselves in along with the clam shell!!

Anyways cleaned all the contacts up and after a bit of TLC and a hour finding 6 AAA bats shes working again :)

Not had a chance to try out the CD yet but tomorrow ile get it going if I can sort out someway to plug the 3 adapters in!!

Ive ordered a all in one adapter but its coming from France so not sure how long that will take but should be a million times better!!

Wish I could get that lucky!
They are quite hard to come by over here as are the CD’s and the menacers.

Theres usually a few for sale but they are mostly crazy expensive or damaged.

I guess none of them were really popular, especially the menacers so they are not rare as such just not common either!

Had another stroke of luck this morning.

Picked up a “spares or repair” justifier for the MD £8 posted with a box (bit damaged but not going to moan for £8!)

And it works! Quids in :D

And I picked up a Saturn to round off my collection the other day.

Wall turned out nice.

You need a better way to display your consoles and make them playable at a moment's notice.  Ditch the IKEA cube.

What about building a retail style false slat-wall with 1x2 backing so you could put the consoles on shelves, run wires behind the wall, and build some kind of a classy switch setup to toggle between the systems?  If you wanted to get fancy, you could do soft LED lighting for all the consoles but that had a 'spotlight' effect on the currently selected console...

Not the right color, but...

Mike

Yeah that shelving would be good. Most of the consoles are in the cupboard under the CRT  but they are all connected via 2 switches a 8 & 4 way so I can play any of them at the press of a button.
