Scrolling stutter in certain games
« on: September 24, 2017, 12:56:03 am »
I am just about there with my setup but noticed that some games that are horizontal (my monitor is vertical) have stutters in the scrolling. This is an example (vs super Mario) and I noticed that the refresh rate seems to be mismatched. Is that the reason why? If so, how can I fix it?

The game stutters slightly every 1/3 of a second or so when moving to the right.

I did some more testing today and it does seem like any game with a switchres selection that is lower, such as 57, that doesn't match the video refresh of 60, for example, has this stuttering. Any way to make the switchres refresh respect the game refresh?

So I tried to add a mode for 436x256 @ 60 in the hopes that switchres would pick it instead of the 57hz mode but vmmaker gave an error saying it overlaps with the 57hz mode and so it just added another 57hz version. I guess I don't know what I am doing.

Calamity or anyone, how should I resolve the stutter for games with the hz mismatch? I am using the vmmaker profile for my monitor now, I got them installed using the mame xml list, which is a Nanao 2930.

It's impossible to get 256p at 60 Hz with either arcade_15 or generic_15 modes. None of TVs I have can accept 256p at 60 Hz.

Basically VMMaker detects that Your resolutions cannot be achievement with current monitor set so it's lowering down frequency to get stable picture.

Playing the game at its native orientation.

Or using an interlaced mode.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Cool, I am fine with that if it can't be done, just wanted to understand.

Calamity, I noticed the same problem with wonder boy which does come up interlaced. It's interlaced, but it still has a mismatched hz and thus a stutter. Is it just another case where the monitor can't do it?

Also, I notice that in this win7 install, games sometimes start up slow and gradually reach 100% speed. Whereas in my windows XP .149  install they start and stay at 100%. Does this indicate something wrong with my config in win7 or is it just due to having a newer version of groovymame?

System1 games are 512x224 so again You need 512 lines (doubled 256).
