Nintendo Bartop with Dynamic Marquee and Bezel
« on: January 25, 2017, 02:12:36 pm »

This is my new thing. I was super inspired by the Mimic build.

It's running a 16:9 1080p screen with a few inches hidden behind the cp.

I'm planning on adding a physical separation between the marquee and the bezel.

It's currently just a monitor in a box and a proof on concept. Nothing is permanently mounted except the side panels and the top and bottom panels.

As it stands, I'm having to make mame .lay files for each game so I'm currently planning on just having it run Nintendo arcade games.

Nice. I wondered when someone would get around to building one of these.

I used a batch file to create my lay files. Is useful if they're all the same but not so much if your customising he bezels at all.

Looks good - which ACER monitor is that ? (seems to have pretty good viewing angle which is sometimes a problem with this type of setup as the colors change pretty drastically when looking at the sides of the monitor but from your pics it seems to stay pretty consistent.

I've had it for a year or so. The reason I chose to use this monitor is because there's actually a huge scratch on the part of the screen that is hidden and I got tired of seeing it sitting on a shelf doing nothing.

You could deconstruct it even further, just frame and mount the monitor, would look amazing as a dynamic art piece.  Then you don't even need controls, just cycle through some high scoring game play videos.

Other wise, you're going to need to figure out how to drill holes in another screen so you can have dynamic CPOs...or what's the point ;)

I mean, projectors are getting pretty small. I could always project the cpo. I'll save that for another build in like 10 years.

I'm looking for instruction sheets (the long ones) for Popeye and Donkey Kong 3 if anyone happens to have those. I can't find them anywhere.

Those are the best images I can find.
edit:turns out popeye never had one. that's a custom dealio.

I am gonna paint it. Theme is typically the thing that comes first for me so I'm kind of working in reverse here. I'm thinking about doing half blue and half orange. It's all kind of up in the air right now. open to all ideas here.

This might have a dumb question burn  don't know a lot about the computer side of names so: can this be done using a raspberry pi? The dynamic mature and bezel I mean.

I believe Rpi builds of Mame do support the artwork files. I'm currently using a computer because it has more realistic scanline effects.

Nice!  I like it.

Wonder how much you have to heat an LCD to get a nice ten degree bend on it...   >:D    (Just kidding.)

That's a really clever reuse for a monitor with a scratch toward one edge.

Love it! I have been waiting for this. As far as I know, it was 10 years ago when it was first brought up.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,70626

It was way outside of my skill and level of interest. Everything from gathering all the necessary arts, to the programming just seemed like a lot of effort. I think Tempest is the best cabinet choice for this since it's angled already, but the DK frame looks real nice.

Looking great - will love to see how this evolves.

This looks really cool! Maybe I'll try something similar, if I get a widescreen laptop with a broken hinge or something.

Just curious what all is involved in this. I may want to revive my Tempest build with a dynamic marquee.

Looking very nice! Are you planning on only using this for Nintendo games? If you plan on putting a physical barrier between the 2 "displays," how will you accommodate different sized marquees? Just stretch or shrink the image?

It's all just modifying the Mame artwork files. I'll be sure to post a lot of the files I used when I finish this.

Thanks! It wouldn't exist without your Mimic cab.

I hit a bit of a roadblock today.

The cooler on the ghetto Dell computer driving this decided to crap out on me pretty much as soon as I got the controls functioning.

It runs but it's louder than my vacuum cleaner. Trying to decide if it's worth finding another small computer or going the raspberry pi route. I did some testing and it will be able to pull off the look I'm going for. The artwork files are the same across platforms.

I know it's in bad form to be a newbie AND bump an old topic all at the same time(I did search to see if there was a new post about this, to no avail), but this project is extremely interesting. Op, did you ever get around to finishing and sharing your files for this project? I was planning on starting a mini bartop DK/Popeye style project, and the single monitor running the game+bezel+marquee is really appealing. Any additional information on this would be great, thanks!

*EDIT* Sorry, didn't see this thread was from six months ago  :dizzy:

I have the same problem with my Dell.  It sounds like a jet engine spooling up when it is under even the slightest of workloads.  Have you blown it out with some compressed air?  Mine gets clogged with dust constantly.
