http://kotaku.com/capcom-is-re-releasing-street-fighter-ii-on-a-snes-cart-1798645758

I was wondering what you guys thought of it.  I think it's cool to see Capcom releasing a snes game, but idiotic to just re-release sfii.  It's a dumb choice even if you want to re-release the game.  Re-releasing sf2 instead of super sf2 or the myriad of superior pseudo-sequels that came after the original is like re-releasing Mortal Kombat instead of MKII.  I mean it isn't even sf2 turbo.

Also I'm wondering who this is supposed to be for.  Did eBay run out of 10 dollar copies of sf2 or something?

Is what I thought of it.

Yeah but it's vanilla sf2.  I don't think I've played it since it's original release.  Turbo/Championship editions allowed you to play as the bosses and that's as far back as I'm willing to go.

Really? I thought "why?".

It's not like this was the greatest port of the game BITD.

 Well I wouldn't buy it.
Like you say SF2 Turbo would of been a better choice and even then seems pointless.

Its not like there is a shortage of carts already. Just go on ebay and by one for 8 bucks or pay whatever stupud price the new releases will be.

They probably misread the SNES mini release notes - and thought it could play the original carts and wanted to get their share of the retro mania surrounding it's release !!  :dizzy:

part cash grab , part 30yr SF anniversary , part getting those weirdos that hoard collectors editions of everything to buy it.

They'll sell all 5,500 copies easy, if the MSRP is only grossing a half a million bucks, I dont think they'll lose much money even if it is a bust.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Agreed - my idiot almost bankrupt brother will buy it just because its a "collectors edition".   ::)

It'll be mildly interesting to see if it sells out.  Seems like most of their "collector" stuff hits clearance shelves.

Can we also talk about the fact that it's $100, seriously.

Some other observations...
  • Selling points say 'Brand New Playable SNES Game' so I wonder if that means the game is new in some way?
  • Don't forget you also get a 'Tri-fold Box with Foil, Gloss and Embossments' plus the 'Premium Instruction Booklet'!!  ::)
  • What the hell are 'Retro Pack-in Surprises'?
  • There's a 'Legacy Cartridge Collection' badge, does that mean there's more of these coming or have they released others?

Yes, unfortunately they've announced that they want to do a whole series of these if this one sells well.

Small runs cost more to make. The person spending $100 on this is likely to never even break the seal.  New means its a new production run, Legacy means this is part of a bigger retro run of other games that are TBD (according to the article). I think its a neat idea but I wont be buying one.

Well if you count inflation, $100 is equivalent to the original MSRP of $60 in the '90's.

I understand it's a short run, inflation comparison etc. but it seems steep for a regurgitation of a not-even-the-best-version SFII cartridge. At that price point I have no desire to own one but no doubt they'll sell out.

The person spending $100 on this is likely to never even break the seal.

Probably safest not to break the seal, did you see the warning.  :D

Quote
Still, before you get too excited at the prospect of reliving your glory days, we should probably point out that although the Steet Fighter II cartridge is playable, a warning on the iam8bit site advises against sticking it in your cherished SNES -- unless you want to commit it to the flames.

"Use of this reproduction game cartridge on the SNES gaming hardware may cause the SNES console to overheat or catch fire," cautions the page.

"The SNES hardware is deemed a vintage collectible, so please exercise extreme caution when using the Product and make sure there is fire extinguishment equipment nearby. Use of the Product is at the sole risk of the user."

Most hard-core fanboys are probably going to buy two. One to play, and one to put in mom's closet so they can sell it in the future for a million dollars.

And if they were using the same tech, I would completely agree with you.  The thing is, you can get a snes clone pcb made for about 5 bucks these days from our friends in China.  The fire warnings make me think these aren't exactly made in the west either.  The shells run about 5 bucks as well.  So hey, let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say that all those "accessories" (also known as paper) cost 20 bucks to make.  That's still 70 dollars profit.  This should run more around 50-60 tops.

When this came out, the video game store in North Park Mall in Dallas had it in a locked glass case in the middle of the store for $90.  Even at my preteen age I thought that was crazy.

I was playing it in a K-Mart in a SNES kiosk when the power blinked out.  The plexiglass lid covering the SNES was broken, and I reached in and tugged on the cartridge.  Then I had a moment of moral introspection and left it.  A few weeks later, I bought a used copy for $20.  Currently sitting in a cardboard box somewhere... 20+ years later.

When Turbo came out for SNES, I went to an Incredible Universe (most of these became Fry's locations).  They had a huge stack of the games shaped like a pyramid.  Hundreds of copies.  Never seen a game with that much hype before or after.

I still like the original SF2 the best...

LOL this is from the actual site selling them. No joke.

I agree with most people here. It's gonna sell, but seems like the wrong version for sale. Price does seem a bit steep, when you consider I bought a new NES game for $70 recently, which is a real cottage industry affair.

other than the price, how would this be any different than an e-bay bootleg you can buy for 9.99 shipped?

no nintendo logo... unbranded fancy plasticy SNES case...

Not that I would buy one, but the difference is provenance for want of a better word.
