VR PVC Cockpit
« on: August 30, 2017, 02:46:17 am »
Just wanted to share a Racing / Flight cockpit I made.

Took the seat from (you guessed it) a 2005 SRT4 was 40 Bucks on local classifieds. Wanted an easy way to move the entire wheel and pedals so I made a sliding mechanism with a toggle lock/latch. The reason why I needed this and not just use the built in slider on the seat is because the flight controls dont move with the seat. Plus this allows for easy break down and storage. Used foam pad for the floor which the pedals are mounted to. I 3d printed some clips that snap onto the PVC and can hold the foam pad. Works better than I was expecting.

To Paint or not to Paint? Would like to maybe red or blue.

3D printed parts:
Flight control mounts (Front and rear to keep the seat even)
Sliding mounts
Toggle lock mount
Floor clips
Wheel Mount
Washers for pedal bolts

Things to add:
Some sort of cord holder for the VR headset.
A couple fans behind or in front of the driver.
A removable front in between the legs mount for the flight stick

But how does it hold up and feel?
It was a little creaky at first but once settled in and glued it feels solid. The flight controls have slight play if used aggressively but not noticeable in game. The Wheel actually feels really good there isnt much play if pulling forward or pushing. The pedals are mounded well and the clips do a really good job holding it all together.

Can this hold PBJ?
Without collapsing yes, but SRT4 seats in general are not comfortable for anyone over 230 lbs

Well done; looks very compact so easy to store, something most people's spouses would appreciate ;)

Looks good man.  Btw, it's my understanding that pvc doesn't take paint well.  You need to dye it instead, which actually turns out pretty amazing if you do it right.

Nice job! Now we actually know someone who has built the PVC rig and has reported on how stiff or creaky it was. It looks nice and compact too!  :applaud:

how hard is it to get in and out of?
and how tall are you?

Im 6'1, around 200 lbs. When the seat and wheel are in the normal driving position its a ---smurfette--- to get out of. I would need to go straight up and out. Thats why I made it slide-able, once I unlock the lever it slides forward very easily which gives plenty of room to get out on the sides even with the flight controls are in.

That is pretty slick.  Nice job.  Assuming the setup is sturdy... as far as cranking on the wheel ?

When turning the wheel there is no play or bounce, If I push and pull the wheel hard enough you can feel some bend.

I will look into this. I think I might do a simple carbon fiber wrap on the straight tubes and dye the rest.

Just ordered some Dye from Ebay and some PVC cleaner. Read a couple of how-to's seem simple enough. Now to decide what color to pick.

Blue joints and blue CF wrap on the tubes would look legit.  Its a great little design, the vigolix of driving rigs.

I ended up going with a Blue Brushed Metel wrap we will see how it comes out. That and dyed blue joints.
