ADP Lady Bug restoration: the licensed German cab [finished]
« on: August 29, 2017, 02:48:55 pm »
It was 1981, and Universal made this awesome game called Lady Bug. Here in Europe we did not get the Universal cabinet, but instead a licensed ADP Germany version. Time to restore one!
I cannot find much on the original machine, so any information would be cool. This is what it’s supposed to look like:

Now compare it to what I’m starting with:

Whoops, that is not a pretty situation. It’s got water damage, rust, a busted monitor, power supply… You name it, it’s broken. I am tackling this one to see if I can fix it up with modern parts. This will not be your 100% original restore, but instead more of a rebuild with modern switch mode power supply, scart CRT, and non-original parts, but it will all rock the original game pcb. Wish me luck!

After removing all the broken parts and cleaning, she looks like this:

That's the thing, it's designed to look like the Universal one but the construction is very different.

Don't worry, Mike. This one is getting RGB Scart Sony Trinitron action 8)

The particleboard construction of this thing turned out to be long-term disaster, as we are dealing with swelling and sagging on all sides.

The bottom portion was unsalvageable and had to be cut off and replaced with new wood.

With lots of corner brackets, I was able to get rid of most of the gaps too.

At some later point, I will hit it all with bondo.

Time for some metalwork. The doors are rusty and beaten up. I am refinishing them with Hammerite.

Part of the welds broke when I bent the doors straight again, but that’s easily fixed with solder and a torch. Just be careful as tin is less strong than proper welds.

Quick lesson, kids. Don't scratch soft paint and think you can just spray over it without proper sanding and degreasing :banghead:

I love this cab..... All Universal cabs (and their clones) are soo freaking awesome. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Are you going to go with the Lady bug theme? They have a pretty decent library and use all of the same style of cabs. I would love to see a Space Raider theme.  :afro:

Never mind... I see you have the original LadyBug PCB. That is infinitely cooler than Space Raiders running on a Pi or some crazy thing. Great pick up!

Thanks, Ian! I managed to get the original gameboard up and running on the bench and will order a proper MeanWell power supply to upgrade everything

The funny thing about this cab is that it used an actual Blaupunkt television chassis with separate RGB interface module. That’s why I think a “modern” 2001 vintage Trinitron with low hours is a good fit.

I've got the original control panel, bezel and marquee laying around too!

Life got in the way massively, but here we go again :afro: I just spent about a week painstakingly sanding and painting the thing in summer temperatures. Bottom first:

Next up were all the edges in visible inside parts. The white back will hopefully reflect the back art lighting a bit better than the original.

Of course the original speaker was toast, so this fullrange from a little JVC speaker will do.

Next up, marquee led lighting. The original marquee is stained pretty badly though  :badmood:

Added back the coin doors. This pic also shows the woodgrain vinyl around the edges Anyone know a better alternatives for the cheap wood wrap? This stuff just did not go on well.

So now this cabinet is finally back inside after 11 years in a shed. I'm pretty stoked ;D

Alright, let's make a copy of the missing backglass bracket, and repaint the old one while we're at it.

Added a LED strip to the back.

Lighting looking cool. Will touch up the glass soon!

Control panel time. Polished the plexi, and put some Hammerite on the front. Shinyyy :afro:

As I have no way of knowing the original joystick, I modified a Zippy stick to fit for now.

It's actually a pretty good stick when you grind down the restrictor plate.

With some temporary buttons, you get a pretty good result:

Rewired the coin door :D

Added led lighting on the rejects, and some small microswitches so you can push the reject to add a credit.

Had to add some custom coin inserts. I'm really happy with it now.

The original stick for the Universal Lady Bug is a leaf stick. It might be their own design. I am not an expert. They come up for sale on KLOV. You could probably just use a Wico stick. It will probably be more reasonably priced.

Dont use wood contact paper, either use laminate or install some proper veneer. Check thewoodveneerhub.co.uk   They do a massive range of styles so you should be able to find something that works. Issue could be sizes of sheet though.

I agree, this vinyl wrap sucks. For now I'll take it off and will probably end up just keeping the black painted edges.

Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for a good deal. Unfortunately these things are not as plenty over here in the Netherlands.

I will keep an eye out for the original stick. If I find one here, if you buy it, I will pay to ship it to you.
If you want a leaf stick at a more reasonable price, Arcadeshop.com sells reproduction Wico 4 way sticks. They are 40 bucks.
Same deal. If you buy it I will pay to have it shipped to you.

This ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- matters to me.

Thanks, Mike! I see some Wico's for sale in Cyprus, but this cab uses some weird 7cm*4.7cm mounting hole pattern. Don't you think it would be kinda bad to go melting original Wico plastic to make it fit? We'll work something out.

In other news, my package with all new caps for the gameboard, and a fancy Mean Well switching power supply with 105C caps just came in. This thing is gonna work great :D

It figures they would make up their own hole pattern. :banghead:
I know there are places that sell adapter plates, but I don't know what patterns they use. You concentrate on the important stuff and I will look for a solution to the minor joystick issue.

Thanks for all the help :notworthy: I'll see how it plays when I get the system up an running in a week, but I do get there are countless of better options. Maybe buy a "leaf pro" joystick and just drill it to size?

Over here we are up and running after a full board recap. Most of the original caps were fine, but a couple had crazy high ESR.

Things are really coming together, so it's time for an update. ;D

The original PSU plate was pretty much shat on by birds and a total loss, same goes for all the wiring. I made a new plank with a Mean Well power supply and was able to save the original credit and reset board. As my power terminal post did not arrive yet, I improvised with some pcb stand off feet. It's not pretty, but it works.

Next up was soldering a whole new wiring harness while it was a 37 degrees Celsius heatwave outside. You gotta use your summer break wisely, am I right?  :censored: I'm pretty happy with the results though.

And then, it finally worked. I was so happy to see the machine come alive for the first time in 20 years.

The moment you've been waiting for: CRT time! Time to swap the original modified Blaupunkt TV with a more recent one.

I found a relatively low hour 19 inch Philips crt locally, and hoped it was a straight fit. Unfortunately it was not.

Fast forward to me furiously trying to make it fit with a jigsaw.

Drilled some holes in safe places on the PCB and screwed it down.

Voila. Looking like a proper machine now.

And finally, we are up and running with the whole CRT setup. This is awesome.

I'm content with the result, but there are two big issues still:
1. The CRT does not swith to RGB when the signal on the scart pin is applied at startup. Maybe I should add a delay relay of some kind.
2. This Zippy joystick sucksss... Diagonal corners are almost impossible.

Time to deal with the flaking bezels. The black paint basically fell off even when cleaning carefully. This is what I'm up against.

I scraped off the black paint with a spatula, spray painted the bezel black, and added clear coat and some silicone to reinforce the smoked glass.

The back glass got a treatment with clear coat and acrylic paint. It's not perfect, but a hell of a lot better.

Hello Mourix!
Reeealy great work.  :applaud:
Do you have a manual / circuit diagram for the Universal 8106 - II Main Board? (I only have a pdf file for the older, splitted 8106 A and B boards.)

My LadyBug is with the same board as yours (8106 - II). I have the Cocktail-Table Version from Sega.
...and I own an original printed "adp LadyBug Service Manual" in german.

Are you from Germany too? You can send me a personal message in german!
Thank you!  :)

I see my internship ending in a few months, so I really want to finish this project by summer. Besides some minor tweaks, the joystick is the only remaining task here. This project has taken literally years and I will finish it properly :notworthy:

So let's summarize things for a bit. The original joystick was some unobtanium Universal (clone maybe?) leaf joystick with a special smaller mounting hole layout and bolts embedded into the metal control panel. My quest for a Wico stick in Europe was a bust, so right now I am looking at importing one from the US. My budget is about 100$ for a proper stick, but in practice that means 50$ for the stick and 50$ for shipping and import duties to my little country far away..

I can choose either a short joystick and drill mounting holes in it, or go for a joystick meant for a wooden CP and make a metal spacer to line up everything without drilling. Right now I am thinking of getting a GroovyGameGear Dominux8 with 4-way restrictor and premium red balltop. Does anyone want to stop me? :P

Give me a little bit of time. If I can't source the proper stick for you I will get a different leaf stick and send it to you for free.

The only stipulation is that you have to send me a pic of you playing the cab when it is finished so I can hang it on the wall in my arcade room.

Never played the game before but looks like it’s pretty close in game play to Pac-Man?  Seems like locating a stick close to that would be good, no?

The Wico 4 way that I have (and other Wico’s are pretty stiff compared to a Pac-man stick,  it may be it’s cause the grommet hasn’t been broken in yet.  I’m sure you are probably aware but if you want a new Wico 4 way they are here (4 inch handle also available):

http://www.arcadeshop.com/i/1538/wico-4-way-red-ball-3.5-handle-leaf-joystick.htm

I picked up this Pac-Pro from GGG and it’s quicker movement but uses a spring rather than a grommet so may not be as “authentic”.

https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=402

Maybe Mikey will locate an original in KLOV.

Good luck, that’s a tough decision.

I am going to ask around, but that is a funky stick. I heard that the universal cocktails used the same base but a shorter shaft.

I am also going to ask people what the closest stick is to that one.

The Universal games I have played around here all have modern micro switch joysticks thrown in them.

The clicky clicky is annoying on a game that is not supposed to clicky clicky.

Thanks for the help, Mike! I would gladly work together to get the most fitting stick. I can get a Dutch company to order anything from GGG if I decide in less than two weeks but would be totally open to a better solution.

Unfortunately I will have to sell this machine by the end of the year as it's in my parents' place and I lack my own. This means I would feel really bad for getting anything for free. Let's find the right one and I'll pay in full, okay? You know my budget, and my pic I will put here anyways ;)

Thanks for all the kind replies!

There is quite a dramatic story behind my arcade collection that started with 14 year old mourix getting a bunch arcade cabinets for MAME, later finding out these cabs were actually rare, the storage barn having leakage, and my current road to redemption by undoing my teen damage and getting the machines an actual future by doing stuff in a way that makes sure they won't be trashed by a teenager again :'(

After this machine I will be doing a WWF Wrestlemania restoration, and I'll go out with my most anticipated restoration of a Berzerk cab which I will end up keeping. But that one will be around 2022 at this pace :P

For now, let's make this Lady Bug count! It has been so much fun to fix something that had been in storage since 2008.

European TV's got a SCART connector with RGB inputs, which is great for use as an arcade monitor for this project. Connecting SCART pin 8 to 12V tells the TV to switch over to 4:3 AV mode. I wired it up, but my Philips TV does not seem to switch to AV when the 12V is already present at the time of powering on. I would turn on the cab and just get snow on screen.

My solution was to use one of the cheap relay time delay boards off Ebay. When I got it I could not get it to trigger the relay, though. Turns out, they added a wrong series diode as reverse polarity protection. The 5V relay engages at 4.5V, but this regular diode had a voltage drop of 0.7V... Good luck trying to make that run on 5V... :banghead:

Bypassing the diode with a blob of solder did the trick:

And wired into the cab it's switching the AV at startup perfectly:

After a long time of doubt, I decided to finish things properly with the joystick. This project had come so far, I just could not live with a Chinese one. I ended up importing a GGG Dominux8 with 4way restrictor plate and premium red ball top. To make it fit I had to drill into my fresh 90 dollar joystick. That was pretty nerve-wracking... I made a hole template in photoshop and went drilling into the disassembled joystick. After some grinding down the base some more, it actually fit!

Now this truly feels better. I can finally control my Lady Bug properly

Very nice.

It might be different for that game, but I believe the dust washer goes under the CP, not on top.

The original joystick hole was so incredibly bothed and off-center, there is no way they wouldn't have covered it up ???

Lastly, I tidied the wiring, touched up some paint and cleaned the whole machine. After rotting in barns for 2 decades, this Lady Bug is officially restored. This was a wild 2 year project with lots of waiting times for rare parts, and definitely the biggest project I have done to date. I want to thank everyone who helped me with this one. Now it’s time for some glamour shots :burgerking:

Well done Mourix, that came out very clean.  I'd be proud of that if it were mine.

:applaud: :applaud: Looks like a nice survivor.  I'm guessing you'll get some time to play it too, what with current climate.

Mourix, if you still own this cab and would like to know more about the original stick, we have this machine in the Nationaal Videogame Museum in Zoetermeer, I understand you're in The Netherlands as well, I work there and can show you the original if you make an appointment with me or I can photograph the thing and post pictures here... I just happened to work on it two days ago and noticed how special and quirky that original stick is, I had certainly never seen one like it.
